This Caldwell line includes John and Margaret (Phillips) Caldwell who settled at Cub Creek in what is now Charlotte County, Virginia and has been research extensively. Unfortunately, much of the research has not been documented properly. Much of the research has indicated that the Mary Caldwell who married John Finley (? - 1783), belonged to this group of CaldwellsJohn and Margaret being her grandparents. However, the father of Mary Caldwell has been variously identified as several different sons of John and Margaret. Research has been done on one son, Thomas, and has proved conclusively he is not the father of the Mary Caldwell who married John Finley.1 Research in progress as of 2006 indicates that a John Caldwell (1695-1789) who lived on Vaughns Creek in Prince Edward, Virginia is a much more likely person to have fathered the Mary Caldwell who married John Finley (? - 1783). However, proof is not conclusive as of this date.
Please be aware this is a working paper and not everything is formally documented. However, many documents can be found online at Sonoma State University Library in the Finley Family History database.
