Native American Genealogy "How-to"

Native American Genealogy

"How-to" Article Series

In the early spring of 2000 I began a series of articles for on the topic of Native American Genealogy. It didn't take long to find out that the length restrictions limited the depth of the articles. As a result, I'm writing a more detailed book on the topic. In the meantime, I am posting my Suite101 articles here in hopes you will find some information that will help in your genealogical research. Following is the list of articles as currently found on my personal website Carolyne's Native American Genealogy Helper. Only those articles that appear as "links" have been uploaded to this Rootsweb site. I hope to have them here soon.

  1. Common Roadblocks to Native American Genealogy
  2. Marriage of History and Genealogy, Part 1
  3. Marriage of History and Genealogy, Part 2
  4. Searching the National Archives for Native American Records
  5. Census Rolls on Microfilm
  6. The Bureau of Indian Affairs
  7. Cherokee By Blood, Part 1
  8. Cherokee By Blood, Part 2
  9. More Sources for Tribal Information

The most important advice I can give you regarding Native American genealogical research is to follow standard genealogical research practices to start. You need to be sure you are researching the correct person in order to trace that person to a particular tribe.

If you are just beginning your genealogy research, you need to know the basic "how-to" in order to be successful. Rootsweb offers some great "how-to" tips on basic research. I've also developed a totally free Basic Genealogy course and I'm in the process of placing the main lessons here on this Rootsweb site. (Click Here for the Lesson pages).

If you have any questions, please send me an email.. Be sure to include the word "Genealogy" in the subject line so your email won't be deleted as spam.

Happy tree climbing!
