Ann CLINCH Campbell (1804 - 1872)

Ann was born Jan. 27, 1804, in Gloucestershire, England, probably in Avening; d. Feb. 21, 1872 in Nelson, Tioga, PA (originally called Beecher's Island).

Ann Clinch's parents were Sarah Lugg, b.  Jan. 19, 1778 in Bisley, Gloucestershire, Eng., d. Jan. 21, 1867 in Nelson; and Thomas Clinch, b. Nov, 12 1778 in England, d. 1805 in NYC of yellow fever. Ann was the only child of Thomas Clinch and the eldest of Sarah Lugg's three children.

Ann and her parents (and the Blackwell family) sailed from Bristol, Apr. 4, 1804 and landed in Philadelphia, May 17, 1804. When Ann was a year old, her father died and on Sept. 9, 1805, her mother married Enoch Blackwell, a widower who had emigrated from the same part of Gloucestershire. According to Ann's daughter, Jane CAMPBELL Tubbs, Ann was sent to live with Enoch's brother, Peter Blackwell, in New Hope, PA. (The late Stella MAUGERI Blackwell believed it was a different brother, Joshua). Sometime after Enoch's death in 1816, Sarah married John Campbell.

When Ann reached marrying age, Sarah suggested she marry a nephew of John, Joseph Campbell. Joseph traveled to meet Ann and she returned with him to Nelson, arriving in late 1821 or early 1822. A week after Ann's wedding to Joseph, on Feb. 20, 1822 in Nelson, her half-sister, Mary Blackwell, married Joseph's younger brother, James Campbell.

Joseph and Ann had twelve children, all born in Nelson, PA:
  1. William, b. Dec. 19, 1822, m. Helen Peasly;
  2. Sarah, b. Oct. 15, 1824, m. Benjamin Congdon;
