James and Joseph Shingler
British Home Children
The Photograph showing one of the Shingler brothers in uniform
Seking information on two uncles who came to Canada as part of the home children emigration 1880 and 1930.
Thanking you again, Doreen Grigsby .
Richard John Shingler born 1891 and Joseph Shingler born 1893 Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England and emigrated to Canada in 1907. One of the brothers was adopted by the family of Niclos Buckley (Nicholus Buckley) and one brother served in World War II for the Saskatoon Light Infantry according to a family heritage photograph.
Note:
James Shingler, and Joseph Shingler, are listed as Jas Shingler and Jos Shingler, so it seems that
Richard John Shingler changed his name.
The one brother is a corporal and from the picture the Badge seems to be; A S Corps Saskatoon Light Infantry, World War Two WW2
A S may mean acting sergeant, as a Corporal normally corresponds to commanding a section or squad of soldiers, and is below Sergeant, so acting sergeant would make sense, though there are a gazillion abbreviatons for AS in the military. It would be interesting to find out what A S Corps would mean.
The Saskatoon Light Infantry is now referred to as The North Saskatchewan Regiment .
A brief history of the Saskatoon Light Infantry;
On 17 February 1955, The Prince Albert and Battleford Volunteers (Machine Gun) amalgamated with The Saskatoon Light Infantry (Machine Gun) and redesignated The North Saskatchewan Regiment (Machine Gun).
The North Saskatchewan Regiment (Machine Gun) was redesignated The North Saskatchewan Regiment on 11 April 1958.
