Rock Lily Scholhaus Humbold Co Canada

Rock Lily Schoolhaus

I found this photo in a box that came from my grandparents house 25 years ago.

On the back someone wrote " Rock Lily Scholhaus Humbold Co Canada" (that is their spelling not mine)

When I found your webpages on the One Room School Project, I thought the photo might be of interest to you.

I know absolutly nothing about it, I don't even know where Humbold (if that is the corret spelling) County Canada is.

I know one branch of my ancestors came to the U.S. from Canada, I am guessing this picture came with them.

If you happen to have any information on the Rock Lily School, when it was in use, etc. I'd love to know about it.

It is not known if that school in my photo was in Saskatchewan.

My great-great grandfather was born in Beverly twp, Wentworth, Ontario in 1842, he married in Ontario and then came to the U.S. in the mid 1860's, some of his siblings stayed in Canada and some came to the U.S. so it is possible that this Rock Lily School was in Ontario or some of the family may have spent some time in Saskatchewan, I just don't know.

I tried to do some research myself (just online) and the only Rock Lily School I found was the one on your website, that's why I decided to send it on to you.

If it is of any use, my great-great grandfathers name was Patrick Bannen, his parents were Edward & Catherine (Trainor) Bannen, I know Catherine was born in Canada and Edward was born in Ireland.

Since I don't yet know of anyone else in the family that came down through Canada, I can only guess that the photo came with the Bannens or was sent to the Bannens by friends or family still there.

Thanks,

Rock Lily School District #1861
SE Section 2 Township 24 Range 25 West of the second meridian
Penzance Prairie Profiles (online) Penzance, Saskatchewan: Penzance Historical Society, 1982. Town of Penzance and the school districts of Edenholme, Iduna, Mariposa, Rock Lily and Sarnia.

According to this book, Penzance Prairie Profiles, the meeting of the area residents was held April 3, 1907 to discuss the organisation of the school district. On August 9, 1907, the stone school house was constructed at SE Section 2 Township 24 Range 25 West of the second meridian. It was the second stone school house constructed in Saskatchewan. The first was Victoria School House (Little Stone School House) built 1888 in Nutana (later named Saskatoon). The third being Mariposa school to the North of Rock Lily.

Humboldt, Saskatchewan is now a city, on July 1, 1905 a post office was established at Sec.19, Twp.37, R.22, W2 this locates it just about due north of the northern tip of Last Mountain Lake (Long Lake) by about 80 km (50 miles) and east of Saskatoon by 111.833 km (69.49 miles). To drive between Holdfast and Humboldt would take 2 hours 10 minutes at 100 km hour (60 miles per hour) for the estimated distance of 160.612 km (99.80 miles) using highways 732 and 668 mainly.

Between Mar 1, 1907 and March 1, 2912 Holdfast, Saskatchewan was named Frohlich before changing names. It was located at Sec.18, Twp.23, R.24, W2

Penzance had the former name of Foote between May 1, 1905 and February 1, 1912 before changing names. It was located at Sec.30, Twp.24, R.25, W2.

Both placenames were originally named after the first postmaster in the area.

Holdfast and Penzance are both withing the rural municipality of
Sarnia Number 221. (Saskatchewan nor the pre-cursor the North West Territories had counties. Before Rural municipalities there were Local Improvement Districts) Residents of Holdfast belonged to the Moose Jaw - Lake Centre Federal Electoral District. Residents belonged to the former Arm River (electoral district) provincial constiuency in 1924. Currently due to re-organisation of the districts, residents belong to the Constituency of Thunder Creek. Trying to find the rationale for the inscription "Rock Lily Scholhaus Humbold Co Canada".

Online there are references to Humboldt County in the American states of California, Iowa, Utah, and Nevada, however these do not help for Humbold Co, Canada as inscribed on the back of the photo. There is a Humboldt county in Ontario near Humboldt Bay there is also a Humboldt Township Manitoulin District in Ontario.

SD 1861 is located in the top north west section of this map
SD 1861 is located in the top north west section of this map, and it is interesting to note that Foote and Frolich are still marked on this map.
1924 Rand McNally Map Capital city of Regina marked in red lower south east corner of this map segmenet. Penzance and Holdfast marked in lime green and are locagted west of Long Lake or Last Mountain Lake. The connector lines in the map are rail lines in 1924 and not highways on this map.
