School district photographs submitted by Olga Moline-Halchuk

My grandmother, Dora Jeanette Rush(later Stephenson) attended Morningstar school, from 1907 (we believe) until 1916. We found these photos and this special gift in a trunk of her belongings long after her death. In the class photo, I can only identify my grandmother, in the back row, standing to the left of the teacher, whose name was (according to the attendance award note) A.M. Roberts. The attendance award itself was apparently a lovely little brush and mirror set in a real satin-lined box. Sadly, the brush is missing and the mirror is broken, but it looks like both had a lot of good use! Cannot say when or how the class photo was damaged, we have not located the missing piece.

I am excited to add this information to your wonderful site and also to visit the location of the school when I travel to Saskatchewan next month!

Thank you,Olga Moline-Halchuk
grand-daughter of Dora Jeanette (nee Rush) Stephenson

MORNING STAR SCHOOL DISTRICT 1701

Thomas Joel writes of "Homestead Days at Elbow" in the local history book; Homestead Days at the Elbow, 1898-1910 written by Krogan, Agnes E. Thorbergson. Morning Star School district was formed in 1907, and one of the first pioneers to the district, Julius Joel was the first secretary, a post he held for fifty years. Julius Joel and Gudrun Jacobson brought into the world seven boys and two girls. Signe Arneson Vallevand writing "Overlooking the Valley" in the Elbow local history book recalled that her father, Chris Arneson settled one mile south of Elbow in June of 1908. Both Chris and his brother Tom erected the Morning Star School.

Mrs. Bernice Kretsch Jackson wrote "The History of the Kretsch Family in the same book. Bernice relates that Joe Kretsch applied for his first homestead near Elbow. Elbow was located two miles west and one mile north of this farm. Starting out in a soddy, by the next year, 1907, Joe had erected a frame house. Joe's sister Mary joined him in 1906, and they were able to allow the Morning Star teacher to board with them. Joe had purchased in 1910 a quarter section of land located one mile south of Morning Star School, and that Elbow was located three miles to the west. Joe married Helen Lobsinger in 1913, and lived on Fair View Stock Farm. In 1915, Florence Lobsinger came west, and worked for them, marrying Joe's brother Pete settling south of the Morning Star school.

A write up on "The Morning Star District in the book lists Fred Shumaker as the inaugural settler who arrived to the area in 1904. It was Fred who christened the school with the name of "Morning Star". As mentioned earlier, Julius Joel was the secretary on the first school board, John Carleson became the chairman, Bill Styner and Fred Schumaker were trustees. The first teacher was another pioneer in the area, Harry Dugan who opened classes with fourteen children. Marice Pederson planted Manitoba maples, poplars and carraganas in the school yard. By 1940, a teacherage was provided for the schoolhouse teachers. "Pioneering at the Elbow", a school booklet was published in 1955, the Canadian Jubilee Year.
