Hi Julia, I finally got time to do the Moose Head School pictures. Butch Moose Head School was built in 1914, on Sec. 30 T54 R19 W3. An acre each was donated by Harry Snevi and J.W. Busby. Some of the first trustees were Alex Murdoch, H Snevi and Vic Anderson, the school opened in 1915 with Mrs. Annie Croucher as teacher. The teacher in 1916 was Miss Mclean. In 1918 the school was closed for lack of students and children were transported to Pine Ridge and Elmhurst schools. In 1921 the school reopened with Isobel Manson as teacher, Margaret Paulson in 1922, Catherine McKonkie, Vera Anderson and Myrtle Graham in 1923, Miss Dudding in 1924, Miss Wilma Angelmire in 1925, Three teachers again in 1926, Miss Wright, Mr. Harold Wagner and Miss Gillis . In 1927 Miss Kate McLaren, Miss Novicka in 1928, Mrs. Ben Nicholas in 1929 and Miss Elsie Stubbs in 1930. In 1931, Jim Allin started teaching and stayed for 26 years until 1957. Mrs Doreen Mowery then taught until the school closed in 1963 with Mrs. Verna Bannerman filling in while she was in the hospital for three weeks in 1959. The students were bussed to St. Walburg after the school closed and later it was sold to the United Church and was used for services for several years. A few years ago some of the former students decided to refurbish the school. These were Harris Allin( son of Jim Allin) Arvo Saari, Clarence Pilling, Jim Moloff, Barry Frisk, Kevin Senkin and others I can't remember. Memberships were sold and with that start, they reshingled, painted and cleaned the yard. They then aquired the wood stove and some vintage desks for the inside. The homemade desks in the front (see picture) were built by Charles Saari out of native lumber. The school is now open to visitors and has proven to be quite popular with names from all over Canada showing in the registration book The blackboard was once full of signatures of former students and other visitors, but was erased by some thoughtless person. Many of those who signed have passed away, so it was a great loss of history to the folks that put so much work into preserving this wonderful historic building. Butch |
