Saskatchewan One Room School Project provides an online history for current generations to enjoy, preserve, and experience, our historical educational, architectural, and cultural, heritage.

Cornwall "Cottage" School or Lorne School
which was a one-room school which operated in the Regina Warehouse District from 1931.


Here is a picture of Lorne School (circa 1931).
The only difference from what was built in 1909
and the 1931 is that it was stuccoed in 1931 when
it was moved to Lorne & 7th Ave, Regina, Sk.


Lorne "Cottage" School from Regina's Warehouse District
  • One room school house built in 1909 ( a wooden school)
  • Initially it was a portable school called "Cornwall Cottage"
  • Cottage schools were those that had no permanent home
  • 1931 found a permanent home on the corner of 7th Ave. & Lorne St.
  • Re-named the "Lorne School"
  • Placed in the Warehouse District to accommodate Kindergarten, Grade 1
    and Grade 2 children who were not deemed old enough to have to cross
    Albert St. traffic and all the train tracks located throughout the
    District to attend Albert School.
  • It had a pot-belly stove until late 1930's
  • There were hooks on the walls for hanging coats
  • The original hand-bell was used until mid 1960's when it cracked
  • The Canadian Flag and an Elmer the safety elephant flag flew in front yard
  • First Teacher was Miss Marjorie T. Smith (Jan. 01, 1931 to Dec 22, 1935)
  • Last Teacher was Mrs. Evelyn M. Stephens (Sept. 1953 to June 1974)
  • Closing exercises for the school were held Tuesday, June 25, 1974.
