  • Arthur School

The Arthur school is still standing NE 1/4of Section 21- Township 5- Range 1-West of the 2nd Meridian. The original church of the Auburnton community, also is still standing. Over a century ago, November 18, 1900, 34 out of 40 area residents signed a petition to form a school district and build a school. His Honor the Lieutentant-Governor of the Northwest Territories A. E. Forget1 approved land allotment for The Arthur Public School District #593 of the North West Territories. James W. Reid, Arthur Watson, and William Henry Ferguson were present to sign this Order of Parliament and Justice of the Peace, Thomas Cope of Oxbow, witnessed the ceremony. At the turn of the century, the area would serve about 29 children, however some were not of school age. Arthur Watson allowed school to begin in an old log house on his property with Richard Oataway as teacher of the initial 12 pupils ranging from grade 1 to grade 3. In the meanwhile, an acre of land was purchased from the North West Land Company to erect a one room school house 18 feet by 24 feet. This schoolhouse lasted until 1934, when a larger, modernized school was built. In 1965, students attended Oxbow school with the advent of modern transportation.2
