Spelling Quiz

Here is a list of 43 spelling stumpers. The placenames with the current spellings are the ones that will be found in the diagram. Spelling of placenames at various locations was not standardized until the Canadian Postal Service needed them finalized for mail delivery. When it comes to old documents, spelling doesn't count, especially with names, be they surnames, given names or placenames. In colonial times, spelling was phonetic and varied widely. When a settler could neither read nor write English, the spelling would be recorded by a clerk, map maker or census taker in the form that they thought best to spell a name. Thus we frequently find several spelling variations on various documents and maps.
