L. A. PAUL.
L.A. Paul, one of the leading agriculturists of Milestone county, is an American by birth and came to western Canada as a young man to take up farming. Born in the southwestern part of Iowa, United States of America, on June 29, 1884, he is the son of A. S. and Emily (Benson) Paul. While his father and mother were both born in New York state they came to Iowa as young people and there were married. A. S. Paul is one of the leading citizens of Henderson, Iowa, where he is connected with a bank, but the mother has passed away. Mr. Paul is a member of the Methodist church, in which he and his wife took an active part for years, and a Mason. Politically he votes with the Republican party. L.A. Paul was the fifth child in a family of six, four of whom are living. He was educated in Lincoln, Nebraska, and Madison, Wisconsin, attending the State University in the latter place. In 1909, at the age of twenty-five, Mr. Paul came to Saskatchewan and purchased a section of land near the city of Regina. He took personal charge of the work of cultivating his land, proving himself an excellent farmer of the modern scientific type. As he has prospered he has acquired more land, a piece at a time, until he is now the owner of four sections of the best agricul- tural land in the province. He has not only used the modern large scale methods in the sowing and reaping of his crops, but he has also been keenly aware of the value of keeping good blooded live stock on his farm. He specializes in horses, raising pure-bred Percherons. This breed of draft horse is too well known to need any special comment and Mr. Paul is not only furthering his own interests but he is helping the entire com- munity by keeping only animals of a high type. Four years after he came to Canada, Mr. Paul was married to Miss Marion Broderick, a native of Brantford, Ontario. They are the parents of two children, a son and a daughter: Broderick and Eisa Bettie. The family attends the Congregational church, in which Mr. and Mrs. Paul hold membership. Mr. Paul is a Mason, his lodge being Wascana Lodge, No.2, A. F. & A. M., and he also belongs to the Assiniboia Club of Regina. His favorite sport is hunting, especially the shooting of big game, for which the wilds of north Canada and the Rockies afford him unusualopportunities. Although Mr. Paul's time is necessarily largely taken up with the affairs of his extensive agricultural projects, he has been able to have a share in the commercial activities of Regina. One of his principal con- nections is with the Queen City Oil Company, operating in Montana, in which much local capital is invested. In these business enterprises he has shown the same sound judgment and enterprise that he displays in the management of his farms, with equally gratifying results.. While he still maintains many pleasant associations with the land of his birth, Mr. Paul has never regretted coming to the Dominion from the States, for he has prospered in all that he has undertaken and, moreover, he has made many friends whose esteem and companionship he prizes highly.
