MARTIN J. BRUTON.

For some years Martin J. Bruton has been associated with the police affairs of the Dominion and is now chief of police in Regina. He was born near Dublin, Ireland, on the 2d of September, 1877, a son of John and Mary (Conroy) Bruton, likewise natives of Ireland. The father en- gaged in farming throughout his life and his death occurred in Ireland in 1921. His widow survives him. To Mr. and Mrs. Bruton eight chil- dren were born, all of whom are living. The father was a prominent Nationalist and a lifelong "Home Ruler". In the acquirement of his education Martin J. Bruton attended the Na- tional schools and Christian Brothers School. Upon the completion of his textbook learning he accepted a position as clerk in an office and was also clerk in a store for some time. He engaged in agricultural pursuits for awhile and in 1905 came to Canada. He first located at Winnipeg. Prior to coming to Winnipeg, Mr. Bruton had served eight years on the Dublin Metropolitan Police force and upon his arrival-the same day in fact-he joined the police force of Winnipeg. He held the office of in- spector of police the last three years of his residence in that city and was the youngest man in service at that time to receive such distinction. In 1914 he resigned from the Winnipeg force and went to Edmonton, where he was made deputy chief constable. He remained in Edmonton eight months, at the termination of which time he was offered the office of chief of police of Regina and he came to this city in February of the year 1914. He has since held this important office and is meeting the requirements of that position in a way which commands for him respect and esteem. He devotes his entire time and attention to his official duties, and has a force of forty-two under him. In 1912 Mr. Bruton was married to Miss Frances Tobin, a native of New Brunswick, and to them five children have been born: Sheila, Eileen, Patrick, Frances and Edmond. The religious faith of the family is that of the Catholic church and they are consistent communicants of the Holy Rosary Catholic church. Fraternally Mr. Bruton is identified with the Knights of Columbus and he holds membership in the Y. M. C. A., the Rotary Club and the Regina Golf Club, and is past president of the Cana- dian Chief Constables Association. In his position Mr. Bruton has won for himself a host of friends. He is loyal and enterprising. possessing the progressive spirit of the times, and accomplishing what he undertakes. Bibliography follows:
