  • The National or Canada Gen Web Host sets up web pages providing information on the country of Canada and oversees and helps the provincial hosts and project hosts.

Are you interested in hosting Regional or project website, and want some more information. The most common question is:
What do I have to do"
You will need:

  • An e-mail account
  • Some free time to set your website pages.
  • Knowledge of HTML

Once that is set up, all you need to do is to update current web pages and create new one which deal with Genealogical information about your chosen Region.
This may be:

  • The two required pages are the home page and the lookups page.
  • Regional history.
  • Maps and relevant geography
  • Updating web links for resources.
  • Emphasizing genealogical resources available for your area available by either internet or postal mail access.
  • Resource Addresses (Libraries, archives)
  • Societies.
  • Cultural and Religious History.
  • Links to relevant Query Boards
  • Links to relevant Mailing List
  • Reference Materials of public domain online (census, deeds, biographics, etc)
  • Know and adhere to World Gen Web Policies.
  • If you are a host of a region you are expected to provide a return link to your province. - https://sites.rootsweb.com/~cansk/Saskatchewan/
  • A Provincial Sask Gen Web logo is available to download to the regional web site...
  • If you ever have an issue that you cannot resolve with any of your fellow regional hosts, please do not hesitate to contact your provincial coordinator, Julia , the Canada Gen Web Host or any other members of the WGW advisory board.

You may want to have a look at the other Country/Provincial-State/ Regional gen web pages to get a better idea.

If you need any tips on writing HTML documents, there is help on Rootsweb and Cyndis List or The Webmasters' FAQ

What are my responsibilities"
They are quite simple. You would provide your e-mail address on your page as a contact person for people who have questions. A little background or general interest in your region helps.
A disclaimer such as this is OK ... NOTE: As xxx regional gen web coordinator, I am simply the person who puts the web pages together and maintains it. If you have any comments, concerns, questions, or suggestions regarding the content or coding of any page on this site, or if any of the links do not work, please let me know. My purpose as a volunteer is to provide a place via the WWW where you can find other researchers and other sources of information. As more information and sources are located, they will be posted. If you have sources to suggest, please contact me. We are unable to reply to requests for personal research or to personally answer questions or queries about specific families or individuals who resided in xxx regional gen web or conduct any research myself. If you are looking for information on an ancestor, please post a query on the xxx regional gen web message board at Rootsweb or check out the xxx regional gen web Look ups page for someone who may be able to do some research for you...

You could maintain a Query page or mailing list for the region if they are available for adoption. To see for any that are available check out Rootsweb .

But I'm not really an expert on genealogy nor on this area, can I still do it"

  • YES!!

Do not let this prevent you from trying. You may not be an expert, but you can not become one either if you don't practice it! And with the contact you will have with the people asking you questions about the regional areas, you will learn more than you ever thought you might, and you might be surprised at how much you already know. You may be more of an expert than you think! So give it a try! If you would like to volunteer for a region or project or have if you have few more questions, please contact me and be a part of an already great team of hosts.

If you are still reading and thinking seriously of trying this please do. Your help will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Julia
