The First Event of Metis Resistance- St Vital- October 11, 1869


Transference of Rupert’s Land to Government caused concern

Oral history says Andre Nault’s land, the surveyors overturned

“My St Vital river lot has a deed; this is Government greed.”

Nault asked his cousin Louis Riel for help barricade St Norbert!


Successful tactics- nothing reached the Red River Settlement.

Winnipeg and Pembina- Metis possessed, McDougal left bent.

Success saved the Nault farm but the incident caused alarm

A family full of leaders vowed to prevent future Metis harm.


Louis David Riel became the leader of the Metis Resistance,

-Captain Andre Nault; Fort Garry protection and assistance.

Gabriel Dumont pledged his tactical skill for military might

They all knew that they would have no choice but to fight.
