Some of Chief Joseph's people of the Nez Perce escaped into Canada, after his surrender to General Miles on October 5, 1877 at Bear Paw Mountains (Montana). Two of them lived among the Cree and Assiniboine in the Battleford area. One of them died, while taking part in the defence of Chief Poundmaker's Camp on May 2, 1885 and was buried where he fell.
