"I hear the voice of the wilderness. It is coming to meet with me. It is coming from the North. Its mood is for war.

I see five horsemen riding down the bank, they reach the river indirectly they are on the south branch, on the east bank. Two of them ride at the head then one of them, keeping a distance, follows. His hourse is solid, a spotted sorrel. The last two ride side by side. I think they are hiding. These horsemen are Metis riders, if I can judge by their horses.

I see a larger number of Indians, they are on the other bank of the river. They are lined up. They follow our path, most of them with great haste. Every day more Indians come to increase their number. Their goal is the same as ours. Be brave, comrades, be brave.
