 Obituaries of people who are buried in the
ANDERSON � Alfred Anderson emigrated from Sweden to Minn., where he bought land and later married. They had three children: Hjalmar, Garfield and Jennie. His wife died when Jennie was three years old. He later married Christine (Amundson), a young widow with one son Clarence. In 1906, with his son Hjalmar he purchased land 7 miles north of Preeceville. They brought some machinery and tools and two horses on the train to Canora. That year they built a two-storey house of square logs, a barn and dug a well. The following spring Christine and children, Clarence, Hazel, Alvin, Raymond, Myrtle and infant son Arthur arrived with the personal belongings and several head of cattle. When they arrived in Canora they had .50 cents left. Alfred did blacksmith work, such as sharpening and pointing plowshare, and making other things. Alfred�s stepson, Clarence attended Etoimamie School, Diabetes claimed his life early. A short time later his mother and sister Myrtle died from tuberculosis. In 1914, his daughter Jennie arrived from the States to assist her father with his young family. Alfred died in July 1943 at the age of 80 years. He is buried at the North Prairie Cemetery. ANDERSON � Amanda (nee Thurstead) Anderson, was the wife of Henry Anderson. She died May 23, 1930 at the age of 44. ANDERSON � Henry Anderson was the son of Oleanna Pederson. He and his wife, Mandy Thurstead, lived on the homestead along with his mother. Henry was one of the first committee members instrumental in forming the Peerless School District. He was on the school board from about 1922-1940. Most of this time he served as the secretary-treasurer. They had no children. His wife passed away in 1930 and Henry remained on the homestead until he passed away in 1951 BERG � Clarence was born in Canton, South Dakota in 1908 to parents, Martin and Freda Berg. The family moved to Holquiam, Washington where they lived until Clarence was ten years old. They moved to Endeavour, and as there was not school for the first years Clarence was taught at home. H took his high school training at Outlook College and got his teachers degree in Regina. He married Evelyn Melsness in 1935. The wedding took place in the North Prairie Church, the first wedding to be conducted there. Clarence taught school at North Prairie School for many years. He bought a farm in the district where his four children; Daniel, David, Judy and Linda grew up. In 1958 he went teaching at he Sturgis composite school until 1970. In the fall of 1970 he taught school at Ilford, MB for one year, and a second year at Thicket Portage, MB. They then retired to their Preeceville home. Clarence passed away in 1973 and is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. BERG � Evelyn Mathilda Berg was born on October 25, 1911 at the farm in North Prairie district, north of Preeceville. She was baptized and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church. She received her education at North Prairie School, Outlook College, also at Teachers College in Saskatoon. On July 3, 1935, Evelyn married Clarence Berg and they lived at the teaherage at North Prairie School, where Clarence taught. They moved to the farm where their family was raised. In 1958, Clarence began teaching at the Sturgis Composite School and in 1963 they moved their garage-house to Preeceville. In 1970, they taught in Ilford, MB and in Thicket Portage in 1971. Clarence passed away in 1973 and Evelyn lived in the family home until she moved to Saskatoon in 1994. She suffered a sudden major stroke on February 16th and passed away in the Royal University Hospital on February 22, 1996. She is also predeceased by her sister Alice, her brothers, Erwin, Noel, Orin and Ludwig; her nephew Joe; her niece Audrey. She leaves to mourn her sons, Daniel and David; her daughters, Judy and Linda; her brothers, Roy, Delmar, Walter, Floyd and Russell. BERG � Freda (nee Newman) Berg, 88 passed away November 25, 1975 at the Preeceville Union Hospital after a long illness. Funeral service was held at St. John Lutheran Church at Preeceville. Burial was in the North Prairie Cemetery. Mrs. Berg was born at Canton, S.D. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Philip Newman. Her mother died when she was born, so she was brought up a widow. Mrs. Larson, and was known as Bertha Larson until her marriage to Martin Berg in 1907. They moved in 1908 to Hoquiam, Wash. where they resided until 1917 when they moved to Preeceville and took up a homestead. In 1948 they moved to Preeceville. Mrs. Berg moved to a senior citizens unit a year ago. Predeceased by a daughter, Lillian in 1927, her husband in 1968 and a son, Clarence, in 1973, she is survived by her three sons and four daughters. Mrs. Henry Brown (Inga) of Preeceville, Melvin of the Pas, Byron of Sturgis, Mrs. James Archibald (Clara) of Porcupine Plain, Mrs. David Jaques (Mildred) of Endeavour, Norman Berg of Saskatoon, Mrs. Gordon Langager (Bernice) of Hatzie, BC; 26 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. BERG � Gunner Berg was born in Norway in 1886 and came to the States as a young man. Later, he came to Canada and took up a homestead. He was a reserved man; a fine neighbor; and didn�t like to impose on anyone. He had beautiful horses and was very fond of them. He worked with Martin Berg clearing land and in harvest and threshing time. They weren�t related, but were good friends. He was a striking figure with his thick auburn hair and proud bearing. He sold his farm and moved to McBride, where he passed away in 1955. BERG � Lillian Berg was born in 1925 on the family homestead in Saskatchewan and died at the age of two years in 1927. Her parents were Martin and Bertha (Newman) Berg. BERG � Martin Berg was born in Toten Norway in 1884, and finished high school there. He immigrated to Canton, South Dakota in 1903, at the age of 19. As he had taken German as a second language in school, he stayed with a German family on a farm for a year, until he learned the English language, then went to Hoquiam, Washington, where he worked with his brother in his store. In 1907 he married Freda (Bertha) Newman. They farmed for about one and half years in Canton, South Dakota, and then moved to Hoquiam, Wash. Where Martin once again worked with his brother in the store. They were known as �K.C Berg and M.C Berg of the Golden Rule Department Store�. In March 1918 they came to Preeceville by train and filed on a homestead the following fall. In 1945 they sold the farm and moved to the North Prairie district. In 1948 they moved to Preeceville, where they built a house. Martin and Freda had nine children; Clarence (Evelyn), Inga (Henry) Brown, Melvin (Mildred), Byron, Clara (James) Archibald, Mildred (David) Jaques, Norman (Dorothy) Lillian died in 1927 at the age of two and Bernice married Gordon Langager. Martin passed away in 1967 and is buried at the North Prairie Cemetery. BRAUM � Ingrid Braum passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. Gronlid in Melfort on Friday June 15, 1945, after an illness of several months. She had reached the age of 86years. She was born to Ole and Anne Sander, at Odalen, Norway on January 21, 1859, and came to America with her parents at the age of eight. They located at Belview, Minn., where at the age of 21, she married Nels E. Braum of Naseca, Minn. on November 11, 1879. On October 4, 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Braum and family moved to the Preeceville district, where they resided until Mr. Braum�s death on December 24, 1943, following which Mrs. Braum moved to Melfort to reside with her daughter. Funeral services conducted by Rev. A Tveit and held in the North Prairie Church on June 18th. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery beside the church. Mrs. Braum leaves to mourn her loss, four daughters, Mrs. Otto Melsness of Hinchliffe, Mrs. A. T. Skrukrud of Preeceville, Mrs. H. O Gronlid of Melfort and Mrs. G. Kohler of Vancouver and one son, Henry Braum of Sheridon, MN; 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. J. N. Sandager of Hinchliffe, predeceased her in 1937 as well as one son George L. Braum of Portland, Ore., who died in 1943. BRAUM � Nels Braum was born in Norway in 1855 and left for the United States with his two brothers, Erik and Hans, while quite young. He married Ingrid Sander at Sacred Heart, Minn. in 1879. Here they brought up their seven children. They immigrated to Canada in 1906 making their home in the North Prairie district. Nels was very active in school and Church work, and before the church was built many of the services were held at his home. When the North Prairie Church was built him and his wife donated the church bell and baptismal font. When they became older they moved to Preeceville, and their son Henry took over the farm. Nels passed away in 1943 and is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. ELLIOTT � Diane Marilee Elliott age 55, of Denare Beach and formerly of Preeceville, passed away May 2, 1998 at her home. Funeral was held at the First United Lutheran Church in Flin Flon and at North Prairie Church with Rev. Carlyle Johnson officiating. Cremation followed. Born on October 22, 1942 in Preeceville, she married Robert Elliott on November18, 1961. Over the years, she was employed at the Yorkton Co-op, Roly�s General Store and was the owner and manager of Overland Cross-Country Lodge. Predeceased by her father Knut Holmes, two brothers, Perly Holmes and Daryl Holmes and a sister Julie Shtuka, she is survived by her husband, Robert of Denare Beach; her mother, Alice Holmes of Courtney, BC; two sons, Rob of Yorkton and Randy of Denare Beach; two sisters, Kay Luckett of Denare Beach and Celeste Frederickson of Courtney, and two grandchildren ERICKSON � Agnes Erickson, was born in 1902 in Sweden to parents Anna and Gustav Erickson. She came with her parents to a homestead in the North Prairie district. After her parents died, she went to work on a dairy farm near Calgary for a short time and then returned to the farm and kept house for her brothers. When her brother Wilfred moved to Preeceville she lived with him. She never married. In 1976 she suffered a stroke and spent some time in a nursing home in Kelvington and later transferred to Melfort, SK, where she passed away in August 1979 at the age of 77. ERICKSON � Anna S. (nee Hanson) Erickson was born in 1861 in Vermlund, Sweden. She married Gustav Erickson and to this union was born five children: Amanda, Alma, Wilfred, Ernie and Agnes. The two girls, Amanda and Alma came by boat to New York at a young age and found employment until 1911. The parents and the other three children came later. The family moved to the Midland area and filed for a homestead. They built a two-storey log house. They farmed together as a family; clearing land by hand; raising cattle and milking cows. When cattle were sold, Anna would walk ahead and lead them to the stockyards in Preeceville and the cattle would naturally follow her. Anna passed away in 1936. ERICKSON � Ernest Erickson was born in 1896 in Sweden. He came with his parents, Gustav and Anna Erickson to Canada around 1911 to homestead in the North Prairie district. After his parents died, he continued farming with his brother Wilfred. His sisters Amanda and Alma both married and his sister Agnes kept house for him and his brother. He remained a bachelor and died in 1941 at the age of 45 years. ERICKSON � Gustav Erickson was born in 1864 in Vermlund, Sweden. Him and his wife Anna (born in 1861) immigrated to the United States with their five children: Amanda, Alma, Ernie, Wilfred and Agnes. In 1911 the family moved to Canada and farmed in the North Prairie district. Gustav passed away in 1934 and is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. ERICKSON � Wilfred Erickson was born in 1898 in Sweden to parents Gustav and Anna Erickson. He immigrated to the States and then Canada with his parents and siblings. When his parents passed away he and his brother Ernie continued farming and purchased a steam engine, together with Henry Olson, and a threshing machine. Wilfred increased his farming and purchased more land in 1955. Later he sold all his land and moved into Preeceville. He lived there with his sister Agnes. Wilfred remained a bachelor all his life. Wilfred took ill in 1978 and after a short illness, died in a Regina Hospital in May 1978. GENYK � Michael Genyk, 81, passed away April 1, 1999 at the Preeceville Hospital. Funeral service was held at St. John-North Prairie Lutheran Church on April 5th. Burial was in North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. Born September 16, 1917 in Fisher Branch, MB, he attended Ringrose School. He was employed at Pickle Crow and Central Patricia gold mines before joining HDM&S in Flin Flon, where he worked as a welder, mechanic and supervisor. He retired in 1978. He served as a chief petty officer in the navy during the Second World War and married Laura Olson on May 29, 1943 in Saskatoon. A member of First United Lutheran Church in Flin Flon, he served on the church council as chairman of its educational committee for many years. Predeceased by his parents, Harry and Eva, and two brothers, Nick and Bill, he is survived by his wife, Laura; a son, David (Joanne) of Red Deer; two daughters, Sharon (Ed) and Sandra (Barry), both of Winnipeg; a brother, Dan of Winnipeg; two sisters, Anne of Hodgson, MB and Pauline of Fisher Branch; nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. GRONLID - Annie (nee Braum). Funeral service for Mrs. Annie Gronlid, 91, who died July 7, 1974 in Preeceville Union Hospital, was held July 10th in the North Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Born at Sacred Heart, Minn. Annie Braum came to Canada with her parents in 1907. She married Pastor H.O Gronlid in 1914. After her husband�s death she resided at Melfort, Saskatoon and Preeceville. Predeceased by her husband in 1928, three sisters and two brothers, she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mathilda Kkohler of Vancouver. HANSON � Anna Marie (Johnson) married Elling Hanson in November 1907. In the early fall of 1908 their own two-storey log house was ready on Elling�s homestead where they moved. This location was one-mile west and five miles north of Preeceville. Her daughter, Myrtle was born in 1910. Marvin Johnson was adopted in 1924 when his mother Christine Johnson died. Later, Marvin�s sister Clara joined the family. After her husband Elling passed away in 1932, Anna Marie with two young children, struggled to manage the farm. In April 1936 she married Louis Peterson. Twelve years later the farm was sold and a large house was built in Preeceville, where they kept boarders. In 1955 Louis suffered a massive stroke and she was once again a widow. Mrs. Peterson maintained her home to 1973. She became an invalid and for the next four years lived with her daughter Myrtle. She died in August 1977, having passed her 93rd birthday. She is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. HANSON - Elling Hanson was born in 1882 in Hillsboro, North Dakota and came with his parents, Jacob and Karoline Hanson, to the Astwood district in the spring of 1906. He married Anna Marie Johnson of the Whitehawk area in November 1907. They had one daughter, Myrtle (Franklin) Carlson. In 1924 Marvin joined the family as a tiny baby, when his mother Christine Johnson died. He was adopted by Elling and Anna and took the Hanson name. Two years later Marvin�s five-year-old sister Clara Johnson, became a family member. Elling Hansen died in 1932 and is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. HANSON � George Hanson, was born in October 1881 in Belview, Minn. He married Hannah on December 30, 1912 at the Rock Dell Church in Belview. They came to Canada shortly after their marriage and homesteaded in the North Prairie district. Their first home burned down in the summer of 1914, but with the help of neighbour�s, the house was rebuilt that summer. They had five children: Norman, Lester, Harvey, Randal and Orla. George passed away in 1943. HANSON � Marvin John Curtis Hanson, 76 of Preeceville passed away April 29, 2000 at the Preeceville Union Hospital. Funeral service was held at St. John-North Prairie Lutheran Church in Preeceville. Burial was in North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. Born February 16, 1924, nine miles northeast of Preeceville, he attended Beaver Falls School and worked as a farm laborer. He later retired to Preeceville. Predeceased by his parents, Elling and Maria Hanson, and a sister, Clara Omit, he is survived by a sister, Myrtle Carlson. (Myrtle Carlson�s mother Mrs. Peterson adopted Marvin after his mother passed away.) HOLMES � Alice M. (nee Rosaasen) Holmes, was born in 1912 to parents Henry and Amanda Rosaasen. Alice had two sisters and seven brothers. She attended school in North Prairie and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. In 1932, she married Knut Holmes and moved to his homestead in the Midland District. They raised six children: Perley, Julie, Kay, Darryl, Diane and Celeste. Shortly after that they moved to Flin Flon, MB, to manage Rosaasen and Elander Dairy. After three years they moved back to the homestead to start farming. They live on the homestead until 1947 when they bought a half section of land in the North Prairie District. She lived here until her husband�s death in 1954 and later moved to Yorkton with her two younger daughters. She was employed at the Yorkton Union Hospital until retirement in 1977. After a second stroke in 1985, she sold her house in 1986 and lived at the Bay View Residence in Denare Beach. Alice passed away in 2003. HOLMES � Anna was born in Molde, Norway in June 1881. She married Knut J Holmes in Aalesund on September 17, 1903. Four children were born to them in Norway: Bergloit, Mathilda, Bjarni and Knut Jr. The family left Norway on May 15, 1909 to come to Marion, ND. Two more children were born there; Martin in 1910 and Alfred in 1912. The family came to Canada in 1913 and settled near Preeceville in the North Prairie District. While here, five more children were born: Laura, James, Irene, Orville and Clarence. Anna passed away in 1936. HOLMES � Florence Evelyn Holmes, was born February 3, 1918 the daughter of Sig and Mabel Larson. Her parents had come from Norway and settled in Marshell County, Minnesota, where Florence was born. The family then moved to Crooked River, SK and on to Flin Flon. She met Martin Holmes at Flin Flon in 1932 and they were married on October 8, 1934. Martin, Florence and their four children moved to the farm in 1941 They had eight children: Marvin - 1935, Marlene born in 1937, Florene 1939 and Alfred (1940) born in Flin Flon and Birtle (Bert) 1942, Joanne 1945, Arnold 1947 and Marlowe born in 1953. Florence passed away May 28, 1982. HOLMES � Knut A. Holmes was born in 1908 in Norway to parents Knut Sr. and Anna Holmes. He came with his family, first to Marion, NS and then in 1913 to Canada to homestead in the North Prairie district. In 1932 he married Alice Rosaasen and moved to the Midland district for a short while and then to Flin Flon, where they lived for 3 years and then came back to the farm. Knut died of a heart attack in 1954 at the age of forty-five. HOLMES � Knut Johan Sr. was born in Aslesund, Norway in January 1873. He married his wife, Anna on September 17, 1903. They raised a family of eleven children. Knut, Anna and their four children born in Norway came to North Dakota in 1909. In 1913 they came to Canada and homesteaded in the North Prairie District. He then filed on a homestead and moved seven miles southwest of Endeavour. There were many hardships during those years. There were no roads other than trails and travel was by horseback or on foot. One of the hardships was obtaining supplies from Preeceville, several miles away. Knut Sr. passed away in 1947. HOLMES � Martin M. Holmes was one of eleven children, born to Knut Sr. and Anna Holmes. He was born on March 7, 1910 in Marion, ND. He moved with his parents to the Preeceville area, where they built a log and sod house near the North Prairie School. His father took up a homestead seven mile southwest of Endeavour and Martin attended Midland School. He quit school to help his dad on the farm and also work for neighbors to help support the family. The work was done with grub-hoe, axe and Swede-saw. Because of the depression years, Martin went to find a job, traveling east with his brother Alfred to Toronto and picked up jobs along the way. After a few years he ended up at Flin Flon and worked as a carpenter. He also had a dog-team that he used to haul freight and supplies to many northern areas for seismologic crews and for trappers. He married Florence on October 8, 1934. Martin, Florence and their four children born in Flin Flon moved to the farm in 1941. During the winter months he started hogging to get lumber to build a new house. He built the new, four bedroom home in 1947 and the family moved in 1948. Martin and Florence had eight children. Martin passed away on January 20, 1971. HOLMES � Marvin Holmes, 64 of Minitonas, MB and formerly of Endeavour, passed away August 7, 2000. Services were held from the Chapel of Swan Valley Funeral Home. Burial was in North Prairie Cemetery. Born December 12, 1935 in Flin Flon, MB, he moved to Endeavour with his family in 1941 and attended Midland School. At the age of 18, he left home to work on a ranch near Bassano, AB and then worked on the oilfield drilling rigs and pipeline construction. He worked on the Trans Canada Pipeline and other systems throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. He was a logger and one of the first that worked on construction and production of Simpson Timber in Hudson Bay. He also worked at a sawmill in Mackenzie, BC until a strike caused him to return to construction work in SK and MB. He married Joan Woznicha on Sept 27, 1969 and they resided in Minitonas until 1980 when she moved to the Swan Valley Nursing Home. In 1976 he began working for Manitoba Natural Resources as the foreman for a five-man crew. The position entailed fighting forest fires in MB and SK and ON. In 1990 he retired. Predeceased by his parents Martin and Florence Holmes, his wife, Joan a brother, Alfred and a sister Joanne Holmes Flemming, he is survived by three brothers, Bert, Arnold and Marlowe and two sisters Marlene and Florence (Ralph) HOVE � Torger Hove was born in 1855. Torger and his wife, Mary had a family of twelve children, ten boys and two girls. In 1911, Mr. and Mrs. Hove and eight of their children came to Canada, and homesteaded in the North Prairie district. Torger died in 1947 and is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. KLEMMER � Florence V. Klemmer age 60 of Toronto, died on September 23, 1977 at her home. Funeral service held from the North Prairie Church with Pastor Bob Jarock officiating. Interment followed in the North Prairie Cemetery. She was born to Gullick and Hulda Thorson, May 16, 1917 in the North Prairie district, where she grew up. She was baptized and confirmed in North Prairie Lutheran Church, where her parents were charter members. She moved to Toronto during the Second World War, where she met and married Lieut. Franklin Klemmer. He was killed in the war near Caen, France in 1944. She has worked for Maple Leaf Mills for many years attaining the position of Administrative Assistant in the Grocery Division. During the last ten years she attended night classes at York University, graduating in honors courses in Sociology and Social Services. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her father, Gullick in 1928; her mother Hulda in 1975; two sisters in infancy, and one sister Edna in 1940. She leaves to mourn, five sisters, Agnes Thorson of Regina, Gladys Widdis of Norwood, Ontario, Ethel Roberts of Calgary, Bernice Monson of Oliver, BC and Inez Parent of Vancouver; three brothers, Earling of Sarnia, Gerhard of Nipawin and Carlyle of Round Hill, AB, also numerous nephews and nieces. KOUTNY � Eunice (nee Rosaasen) Koutny, 43, of Kelowna, BC and formerly of Preeceville, passed away July 17, 1991 in the Kelowna General Hospital. Funeral service was held in the Evangel Tabernacle and burial in North Prairie Cemetery. Born on August 11, 1947 in Preeceville, she was educated in the North Prairie district. She worked as a housekeeper. On July 20, 1968 she married Richard James Koutney in the North Prairie Church. She is survived by hr husband; her parents, Spencer and Yolanda Rosaasen; a son, Dwayne o Kelowna; a daughter, Lois (Randy) Carlson of Coquitlam, BC; a brother, Lynn (Dixie) Rosaasen of Killam, AB; two sisters, Debbie (Jonathon) Erickson of Carlyle and Vonda (Arnold) Eikeland of Red Deer, AB. LARSON � Inga Larson was born December 6, 1926 to parents Sevrin and Bergeliot (Holmes) Larson. Inga passed away on March 6, 1937. She is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. LARSON � Laurie was born on June 6, 1942, on the farm in the Midland District. His parents were Sevrin and Bergolit Larson. He received his education at Midland School and quit at the age of sixteen to help at home. He went out working doing bush work during the winter and working as a farm hand during the summer. In 1972, he married Margaret Luchinski of Endeavour. They lived at the Larson homestead for awhile and then moved to a farm 5 miles southwest of Endeavour. They had four children: Michelle born in 1974, Rhonda 1976, Kirk 1980 and Mona, Laurie had three brothers, Lloyd, Stanley and Oscar and twin sister Ester. Laurie was employed at W&W Gleave Construction of Preeceville during the summer as farm hand and winter months at the Walker logging camp. Laurie spent his last three years at the Senior Units in Sturgis. He passed away August 9, 2010. LARSON � Marriet Bergeliot (nee Holm) Larson, 79 of Preeceville, passed away on December 27, 1980. The funeral service was held in St. John Lutheran Church, Preeceville and burial in North Prairie Cemetery. Born in 1901 at Molde, Norway to Knute and Anna Holm, at seven years of age she moved with her family to North Dakota. In 1913, they came to Sask. and settled in the North Prairie-Midland district. She was educated at the North Prairie school and in 1920, she married Sevrin Larson and they farmed in the Midland district, until their retirement in 1968 when they moved to Preeceville. She was a member of the Midland Ladies aid and North Prairie Lutheran Church. Predeceased by her parents, five brothers, one sister, Laura and one daughter, Inga, she is survived by her husband; four sons, Lloyd and Oscar of Birch Hills and Stanley and Laurie of Endeavour; one daughter, Esther Walker of Endeavour; two brothers, Orville and Clarence Holm of Flin Flon; two sisters, Matilda Berg of Flin Flon and Irene Dunn of Victoria; and 10 grandchildren. LARSON � Sevrin Larson, 98, passed away on February 8, 1986 in Preeceville Hospital. Services were held from St. John Lutheran Church burial was in North Prairie Cemetery, Born on April 2, 1887, in Molde, Norway, he was educated in that country before coming to Canada. He settled in the North Prairie district where he farmed and worked as a carpenter. On March 18, 1920, he married Bergoliet Holmes at Preeceville. Predeceased by his wife and a daughter, Inga, he is survived by four sons; Lloyd of Birch Hills, Stanley and Laurie of Endeavour, and Oscar of Preeceville; a daughter Esther, of Endeavour, and 10 grandchildren. LETMOLEE � Gustav Letmolee was born in Kongsberg, Norway in 1899 and came to Canada in 1916, where he took a homestead in the North Prairie district. In 1920, he married Alma Holt. They had two daughters, Ardis born in 1924 and Betty born in 1927. Gustav was a member of the R.M. council of Preeceville, retiring from the council in 1932. In December of 1932, he went to Fort Qu�Appelle San and returned in May of 1934. He passed away June 12, 1934. He was buried in North prairie Cemetery. His wife moved to Vancouver in 1946 to make home with her daughter Betty Freisen and family. MELSNESS � Otto Melsness was born in 1874 in the Sacred Heart, Minnesota district. He married Emma Braum in 1901. They moved to St. Paul where Otto worked as a streetcar conductor for a few years. Otto moved his family, which now included three young sons, to the North Prairie district in 1906. Otto was secretary for many years for the school and was very involved in the municipal affairs. He was auditor of the rural municipality for many years. Otto passed away in 1957. MONSON - Melvin Monson of Oliver, BC, passed away on March 29, 1999, in Kelowna. Interment to be held July 27th at North Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery. Born in Elbow, SK, he moved with his family to Flin Flon and was employed with the exploration department of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. He married Bernice Thorson in 1942 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Flin Flon and they moved to Prince Rupert, BC, where he worked as a ship builder and later at a lumber mill in Vancouver. In 1950, they moved to Flin Flon, where he pursued an interest in prospecting and discovered seveal ore bodies during his career. He retired from HBM&S in 1977 and they moved to Oliver, BC, where he played violin with an orchestra and did some painting and soapstone carving. Predeceased by his parents, George and Lena Monson, and his wife, Bernice, he is survived by a son Ron (Maureen); two daughters, Sharon (Bob) and Robin (Miles), and nine grandchildren. OLSON � Arthur Olson was born in 1912, the son of Martinus and Hilda Olson. The family lived in the North Prairie district. Arthur died 1917 and is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. OLSON � Harvey Olson was born in 1907 on the family homestead in the North Prairie district. He was the son of Martinus and Hilda Olson. He passed away in 1932. OLSON - Henry Olson 86 of Preeceville, died on November 4, 1989 in the Saskatoon City Hospital. Funeral held at the Lutheran Church in Preeceville. Born on May 8, 1903 in Glenwood, Minn., he came with his parents to the North Prairie area in 1905, where they farmed. He was educated at North Prairie Rural School. He later graduated from a course in Winnipeg on steam engineering mechanics. He married Borgchild Myhr on December 8, 1927 at Yorkton. He was a school trustee and served as church council trustee. Predeceased by his parents Martinus and Hilda Olson; four brothers, Arthur, Harvey, Irvin and Elmer; a sister Manda; a son, Lavern in 1986; and a grandson Wayne in 1969; he is survived by his wife, four daughters Gleniss Dewar of Calgary, Leone Barabonoff of Saskatoon, Delores Anderson of St. Laurent, MN and Marilyn Dietrich of Winnipeg; a brother, Martin (Kate) Olson of Preeceville; three sisters Leona (Bob) Trodin of Calgary, Clarice (Roy) Melsness of Kelowna and Laura (Micky) Genyk of Preeceville; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. OLSON - Hilda Bertina (nee Rosaasen) Olson passed away on May 24, 1970 in Aberdeen Private Hospital, Victoria, BC. Funeral service held in North Prairie Lutheran Church. Hilda Bertina Rosaasen was born near Sacred Heart, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed in Our Savior�s Lutheran Church at Sacred Heart. In 1901 she married Martinus Olson in the same church. In 1905, with her husband and three children, she emigrated to Sask. to what is now the North Prairie district. She was a charter member of North Prairie Lutheran church and remained a member the rest of her life. She was the last of the first adults in that district to pass away. For 10 years, Mrs. Olson made her home wit h family members at Flin Flon, Calgary and Victoria. Predeceased by her husband in 1939, two sons, Arthur in 1917 and Harvey in 1932; five sisters, two in infancy, Mrs. Mathilda Strand of Preeceville Hannah Erickson of Sacred Heart, Minn., Mabel Lefstad of Washington; three brothers, Henry Rosaasen of Preeceville, John of Windsor and Melvin of Washington. She is survived by four daughters, Manda Bexrud of Victoria, Lenora Trodden of Calgary, Clarice Melsness of Kelowna and Laura Genyk of Flin Flon; four sons, Henry and Martin of Preeceville, Irwin of Calgary, Elmer of Edmonton; 32 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren; a half-sister Clara Henderson of Montevideko, Minn. and a half brother, Harold Rosaasen of Winnipeg. OLSON - Katherine (nee Midock). Funeral service for Katherine Olson 87, of the Yorkton Nursing home and formerly of Preeceville, passed away on September 6, 2004. Services were held from the North Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial was in the North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. Born on November 11, 1916 in the Hinchliffe area to Bill and Nettie Midock, she attended Etoimamie School. In 1937 she married Martin Olson and they farmed in the North Prairie district until they moved to Preeceville in 1977. She was a member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church and held office in the ELW. She taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. In 1999, she moved to the Lions Hostel, where she resided until last June, when she moved to Yorkton. Predeceased by her husband, Martin in 1997, her parents, four brothers, Mike, George, Peter and Willy and two sisters, Mary and Doris, she is survived by a son Allan (Lotty); a daughter, Darlene (Warren) Mann; a brother Jack; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. OLSON � Lavern Franklin Olson 58, passed away on January 3, 1986 at the Plains Hospital in Regina, after a snowmobile mishap on December 23rd. Funeral service was held from St. John�s Lutheran Church in Preeceville. Burial was in the North Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery. Lavern Franklin Olson was born April 26, 1928 to Henry and Borghild Olson. He received his education at North prairie School and Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute. He married Florence Jaques on July 7, 1951. They resided on the home farm in the North Prairie district for the past 34 years and were engaged in grain farming and egg producing. Lavern served on the church council for many years and loved to sing in the choir and men�s quartet. He enjoyed the out of doors, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and curling. He was a member of the Sask. Wheat Pool committee. Predeceased by a son Wayne in 1969 he is survived by his wife; two sons; Perry of Calgary and Tim of Preeceville; two daughters, Patricia of Trenton, ON and Angela of Heinzburg, AB; three grandchildren; his parents and four sisters, Glennis Dewar of Calgary, Leone Barbanoff of Saskatoon, Delores Anderson and Marilyn Dietrich of Winnipeg. OLSON � Martin Olson 87 of Preeceville passed away November 4, 1997 at the Preeceville Hospital. Services were held from the ST. John-North Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial was in the North Prairie Cemetery. Born on July 29, 1910 in the North Prairie district he was educated at North Prairie and Preeceville Schools. He owned and operated his own farm in the North Prairie district. A member of the North Prairie District Farm Club and Sask. Wheat Pool, he was an active member and held office in the North Prairie Lutheran Church. He married Katherine Midock on De. 14, 1937, at the United Church in Preeceville. Predeceased by his parents, Martinus and Hilda Olson, five brothers, Henry, Irvin, Elmar, Harvey and Arthur and one sister, Manda Strom, he is survived by his wife; one son, Allan Olson of Yorkton; one daughter, Darlene Mann of Cochenour, OT; three sisters, Lenora Trodden and Clarice Melsness, both of Kelowna, BC and Laura Genyk of Preeceville, and six grandchildren. OLSON � Olaf Olson was born June 19, 1875 in Voler, Norway, the son of Olaf and Olea Olson. He came to the United States in June 1887 through Quebec and then to Canada in the spring of 1907 and lived in the North Prairie district. He was a charter member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church. Olaf died in 1959. OLSON � Wayne Barry Olson age 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Olson of Preeceville, the courageous young lad who fought a losing battle with leukemia for almost two years, died on December 20, 1969 in the University Hospital at Saskatoon. Wayne knew the nature of his illness, but it was never discussed at home and he lived an active normal life up until his death. He shopped for Christmas gifts for his parents, brothers and sisters two days prior to his death. Funeral service was held in the North Prairie Church, where Wayne had been baptized and a confirmed member of the church. Born at Preeceville on July 10, 1954, he attended the Preeceville School, taking grade 9 this term. Besides his parents he is survived by his older sister Patricia, who is attending school at Outlook; two brothers, Timmy and Perry; a younger sister, Angela; four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Olson and Mr. and Mrs. David Jaques of Preeceville and a great-grandmother, Mrs. Hilda Olson of Victoria. PEDERSON � Oleana Pederson was born in 1860. Around 1909 she and her two children, Henry Anderson and Olella Pederson moved from Sacred Heart, Minn. to the area, which was then the Peerless School district, and they homesteaded. She never remarried and lived on her homestead until she was in her nineties. She then moved to Preeceville and lived with Mr. and Mrs. Martin Berg until she passed away in 1959. RAGLIN � John C. Raglin, 89 of Preeceville, passed away December 10, 1971 at his home in the Lions Hostel. Funeral held in the North Prairie Lutheran Church. He was born June 4, 1882, in Renfrew County, Ontario and came to Preeceville in 1914. He married Alma Erickson and they moved to the North Prairie district, where they farmed until their retirement to Preeceville in 1945. While residing at Preeceville, Mr. Raglin was caretaker at the Preeceville Union Hospital for several years. He moved to Regina and returned to Preeceville, when the Lions Hostel was built. Mr. Raglin was the first resident at the Hostel, moving in before construction was completed and before any staff was hired. Predeceased by a daughter, Violet in 1922 and his wife in 1947, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Reagan (Dorothy) of Calgary and Evelyn (Douglas) Long of Edmonton; three sons, Lawrence of Preeceville, Walter of Saskatoon and Bert, who is with the Canadian armed forces in Germany; and six grandchildren. RAGLIN � Lawrence Raglin, 78 of Preeceville, passed away October 1, 1996 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held in the Chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home and burial in North Prairie Cemetery. The son of John and Elma Raglin, he was born on September 9, 1918 at Hinchliffe adn attended Beaver Falls and Etoimamie Valley Schools. He and his brother, Walter farmed for many years, including several years operating a dairy farm. He also worked as a farm labourer until he retired. Predeceased by his parents, Elma in 1947 and John in 1971; and two sisters, Marion and Dorothy Reagan, he is survived by two brothers, Walter of Saskatoon and Bertrand of Comox, BC; a sister Evelyn Long of Victoria, BC. RAGLIN � Walter John Raglin, 83 of Wakaw and formerly of Hinchliffe, died March 4th at the Pioneer Lodge in Wakaw. Service was held at the St. John - North Prairie Lutheran Church in Preeceville. Burial was in the North Prairie Cemetery. Born on November 13, 1917, in the Hinchliffe area to John and Alma Raglin, he attended Beaver Falls and Etoimaime Valley schools. He was involved with farming, raising cattle and operating a dairy most of his life. When he first left home, he worked at a large dairy farm in Arcola. After surgery and extensive rehabilitation for a brain tumor, he returned home for a short period before starting a new job as a mobile feed mill operator for Leo Muench in Humboldt. After the business was sold, he went to work for the college of agriculture at the University of Sask. as feed mill operator. He also trained as a security person for the University Hospital parking lot. Later in life, he trained to do income tax returns for farm businesses and individuals. He worked for H&R Block and had several private accounts. As problems developed with his health, he moved to Wakaw. In September of 2003, he became a resident at a private care home. In the spring of 2005, he moved to the Wakaw Nursing Home. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Bert and Lawrence; and three sisters, Dorothy Reagan, Evelyn Long and Violet in infancy. ROSAASEN � Hazel Aliza was born on November 12, 1917 on the family homestead, the daughter of Nels and Augusta Lundeen. The family moved into the town of Preeceville in 1921 and Hazel took her schooling there and normal school at Saskatoon, and later taught at Etoimamie, Reserve and North Prairie Schools. On December 28, 1943, she married Lloyd Rosaasen. They farmed and raised a family of three children, Stanyce, Ken and Lloyd. Hazel died April 23, 1956 due to cancer. ROSAASEN � Henry Rosaasen of the North Prairie district, passed away in the Preeceville Hospital on March 4, 1966, after a lengthily illness. He was born at Sacred Heart, Minn., on September 17, 1880. In 1904 he came to Canada, homesteading in the North Prairie district, where he farmed until his retirement in 1962. In 1906 he married Clara Olson of Scared Heart, and to this union was born one son, Harold. On October 16, 1910 his wife died. He re-married in 1914 to Amanda Erickson of North Prairie. They raised six sons and three daughters. He was a charter member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church. He served as delegate with the Sask. Wheat Pool for several years during the 20�s and was active in many community affairs. He was predeceased by his wife Amanda in 1948 and by two sons, Borden and Munro in 1965. He is survived by five sons, Harold of Wazata, Minn., Spencer, Lloyd, Hilding and Howard all of North Prairie; three daughters, Alice Holms of Yorkton, Beatrice Hermanson of Buchanan and Laurel Stelstol of Chelan; one brother Harold of Winnipeg; three sisters, Hilda Olson of Calgary, Hanah Erickson, Sacred Heart, Minn. and Clara Henderson of Granit Falls. There are 38 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. ROSAASEN � Hilding Arnold Rosaaen, 78 of Preeceville passed away January 25th at the Preeceville Hospital. Services were held from St. John-North Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial was in the North Prairie Cemetery. Born May 26, 1918, in the North Prairie district, he attended North Prairie and Preeceville schools. He worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the army in 1942 He served until 1946 and then started a dairy farm. He married Verna (Gullason) on November 19, 1949 in Saskatoon and they operated a dairy farm in the North Prairie district. A member of the North Prairie Church council, he served as treasurer for many years. He was a member of the Preeceville Hospital board and was active in Preeceville Club 60. Predeceased by his parents, Henry and Amanda Rosaasen, a son Alvin, five brothers, Bud, Monroe, Lloyd, Spencer and Harold and a sister Betty Hermanson, he is survived by his wife Verna; two sons Casey Hobb of Preeceville and Arden (Nicola) of Saskatoon; a daughter Karen (Blair) Ritchie of Yorkton; a brother Howard of Preeceville; two sisters, Alice Holmes of Comox, BC and Laurel Steiestol of Chelan, and three grandchildren. ROSAASEN � Lloyd Gordon Rosaasen age 73, of Preeceville, passed away March 13, 1990 in Saskatoon City hospital. Funeral service held in the Preeceville Funeral Home and burial in North Prairie Cemetery. Born on March 23, 1916 in Preeceville, he was the son of Henry and Amanda Rosaasen. He attended the North Prairie School and completed his grade ten. He farmed on the family dairy farm and later was a grain farmer until he died. He married Hazel Aliza Lundeen on December 28, 1943 at Preeceville. Predeceased by his wife Hazel in 1956; his mother in 1948; his father in 1965 and two brothers, he is survived by a son, Ken of Saskatoon; a daughter, Stanyce Head of Preeceville; four brothers, Harold of Redland, Calif., Spencer, Howard and Hilding all of Preeceville; three sisters, Alice Holmes of Denar Beach, Betty Hermanson of Buchanan and Laural Steistol of Chelan and seven grandchildren. ROSAASEN � Randall Borden Rosaasen was born December 5, 1953 and died December 8, 1953. He was the son of Henry and Amanda Rosaasen. ROSAASEN � Spencer Rosaasen, 80 of Preeceville, passed away July 25, 1994 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral service held in the Evangel Tabernacle, Preeceville. Born on May 4, 1914 at home on the farm, he was educated at North Prairie School. On November 3, 1942, he married Yolanda Toth at Preeceville. They farmed in the North Prairie district until 1981, when they retired adn moved into town. Predeceased by his parents, Henry and Amanda; three brothers, Borden, Monroe and Lloyd; and a daughter, Eunice Koutny in 1991, he is survived by his wife, Yolanda; a son Lynn (Dixie) of Killam, AB; two daughters, Debbie (John) Erickson of Minnetonka, Minn. and Vonda (Arni) Eikeland of Red Deer; three brothers, Howard (Audrey) of Preeceville, Harold (Grace) of Redlands, Calif., and Hilding (Verna) of Preeceville; three sisters, Alice Holmes of Courtney, BC, Betty (Alfred) Hermanson of Canora and Laurel Steistol of Chelan; and ten grandchildren ROSAASEN � Verna (nee Gullason) Rosaasen, 80 of Saskatoon and formerly of Preeceville district, passed away on August 4th at Parkridge Centre in Saskatoon, was held August 9 at North Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial was in the North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. Born on December 17, 1924 in the Usherville district to Peter and Alexandra Gullason, she attended Usherville School. She worked on the family farm and for a farmer in the Kelvington area. She worked on the Rosaasen farm before she married Hilding Rosaasen on November 19, 1949. They operated a dairy and beef operation. She taught Sunday school and prepared Nelson Lake Bible Camp for campers. Predeceased by her son, Alvin in 1989, her husband in 1997; her parents Peter and Alexandra, a brother, John and two sisters, Rita and Lena, she is survived by two sons, Casey Hobb and Arden Rosaasen; a daughter, Karen Ritchie of Saskatoon; four sisters Dora Nygaard of Faust, AB, Mary Basaraba of Regina, Evelyn Long and Eva Blaskon; and five grandchildren. ROSAASEN � Yolanda was born in 1922, the daughter of Albert Sr. and Rosalie Toth. The parents and their five children immigrated to Canada from Hungry on July 22, 1928. They first settled at Lestock, SK and then moved to a homestead in the Peerless district in 1930. Yolanda attended the Peerless school. She married Spencer Rosaasen and they raised four children. ROSTE � Anna Margaret (nee Mosell) Roste, passed away at St. Paul�s Hospital Palliative Care Unit, in Saskatoon, on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Anna was born in Sweden on February 7, 1918 and immigrated to Sask. with her parents in 1920. They settled in the Buchanan district. After hr marriage to Melvin Roste in 1945, they lived on the farm in the North Prairie district, near Preeceville. After her husband�s death, Anna moved to town, and was a cook in the Preeceville Hospital for many years. She moved to Luther Tower in Saskatoon in 1994. Anna is survived by her six children: Darryl (Rita), Lowell (Patricia), Dean (Judy) Jean (Reid) Homstol, Colleen Clark and Shelly Roste; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Esther Roste; a brother, Art (Nellie) Mosell. She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin Roste; sister, Karin Nelson and son-in-law, Andrew Clark. ROSTE � Clifford. Funeral service for Clifford Roste, 78 of Preeceville and formerly of Fairlight, who died September 27 at Yorkton Hospital, was held October 2 at St. John-North Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial was in North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. Born July 19, 1920 in Preeceville, he attended Etoimamie and North Prairie schools and worked on the family farm unit enlisting in the army. He married Shirley Adamson of October 22, 1950 at the Adamson farm, near the Etoimamie River. They moved to Vancouver, where he worked on the docks and for MacDonnel Sheet Metal. They later moved to Langley, BC where he worked at a sawmill. After about six years there, they moved to Fairlight, SK and operated a dairy farm for 10 years. He worked for his brother and then started an upholstery shop, which he and Shirley ran until she died in 1985. Predeceased by his parents, his wife, Shirley, a son Laurie, four brothers, Mervin, Edgar, Walter and Lyle, and a sister Gladys, he is survived by a son Lance (Sherry); a daughter, Lorna Mitchell of Regina; three brothers, Wilbert, Harold of Mission, BC and Vern of Morden, MB; a sister Lorean of Vancouver; four grand children and two great-grand children. ROSTE � Edgar Roste was born in 1912, the eldest son of Carl Martin and Anna Roste. He grew up on the family homestead in the North Prairie district. He died as a result of a hunting accident in 1927. ROSTE � Erick Roste was born in 1850. Erick and his wife, Bertha and five sons, Martin, Oscar, Emil, Knute and Tyler and a daughter, Mary, came from Sacred Heart, Minn., in 1909 and homesteaded in the North Prairie district. Erick passed away in 1918. ROSTE � Harold Roste passed away peacefully on September 13, 2003 at home. He was born March 24, 1915 in Buchanan, SK and spent many years farming near Preeceville, before moving with his family to Quesnel, BC and then to Mission, BC in 1969, where he lived until his passing. He was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Anna Roste; brothers, Edgar, Melvin, Wilbert, Lyle, Clifford and Walter; and sister Gladys. Harold is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Esther; daughter Marlys (Roger Cote), son Rodney (Corrine), daughter Marlene (Edmund Duchesne) and son Dale as well as 10 grandchildren; a sister Lorean Atkinson and his brother Rev. Vernon Roste. Harold was a faithful and well-loved member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Mission and now is happy in the presence of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. A memorial service was held in Mission, BC and interment followed on Sept. 20th at North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. ROSTE � Lyle Ellsworth Roste age 65, of Quesnel, BC and formerly of the Preeceville district, passed away November 24, 1989 in G. R. Baker Memorial Hospital, Quesnel. Funeral was held in the chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home and burial in North Prairie Cemetery. Born on July 8, 1924 at the Roste homestead, he was educated at Etoimamie Valley and North Prairie Schools. He worked at farming and logging. He married Hazel Scarth on July 28, 1948 in North Prairie Lutheran Church. Predeceased by his parents, Martin and Anna and three brothers, Edgar, Melvin and Walter, he is survived by his wife, Hazel; a son, Gary of Penticton, BC; three daughters, Linda Dolton of Endeavour, Sherryl Nebocat of North Vancouver and Caroline Seni of West Vancouver; four brothers, Clifford of Preeceville, Harold of Mission, BC, Wilbert of Burnaby, BC and Vern of Edmonton; two sisters, Gladys Frances of Mapleridge, BC and Lorean Atkinson of New Westminister, BC; and four grandchildren. ROSTE � Martin, along with his parents, Eric and Bertha Roste and four brothers, Oscar, Emil, Knute, Tyler and one sister Mary, came from Sacred Heart, Minn. in 1909 to homestead in Saskatchewan. On June 29, 1911 Martin married Anna Finden. Martin bought a steam engine and set up a sawmill. There was no market for poplar lumber so this venture was a losing cause. H was an active member for years, also a trustee for the Etoimamie Valley School. Martin and Anna were chartered members of the North Prairie Lutheran Church. Martin was also a trustee. Martin passed away in 1952 and is buried at the North Prairie Cemetery. ROSTE � Shirley Roste age 52, of Preeceville, died on February 1, 1985. Shirley Elizabeth Adamson was born August 12, 1932 at Walpole, SK. In 1934 she moved to Hinchcliffe with her parents, Herb and Edith Adamson. She attended school at Etoimamie Valley. On October 22, 1950, she married Clifford Lawrence Roste at her parent�s home. At the time of her death, she was owner-operator of the Double R Upholstery Shop. She was active in the town council, being the first female councilperson at Preeceville. She also was a member of the Hinchcliffe Sunshine Girls. Predeceased by her son, Laurie; her parents and two brothers, John and Arthur; she is survived by her husband, Clifford of Preeceville, a son Lance of Lady Lake; a daughter Lorna Mitchell of Regina; two brothers, Frank Adamson of Vancouver, and all Adamson of Hinchcliffe; two sisters, Sylvia Burke of Moosemin and Sandra Ziolkoski of Regina and four grandchildren ROSTE � Wilbert Melbourne Roste was born October 28, 1916, the son of Anna and Martin Roste of Hinchliffe. He married Doris Scharfenberg in 1953 and they raised four children: Barbara, Lois, Doreen and Edgar. After two years of crop failures they moved to BC. Wilbert passed away January 21, 2002. SANDAGER � Ellen "Lena" Sandager, was born in 1885 in Sacred Heart, Minn., and immigrated to the North Prairie district with the Braum family. She married Julius Sandager at the North Prairie schoolhouse. She was active in local church affairs, taught North Prairie school until a regular teacher could be hired. She was a midwife to many and had an open house for anyone needing help. She had three children, Mildred born in 1914, Norris 1916 and Elsie. Lena died in 1937 from typhoid fever, contacted while helping others who were ill. SANDAGER � Floyd Norris Sandager, 58 passed away August 2, 1964 in Canora Hospital. Born at the Sandager homestead, he grew up in the North Prairie district and received his high school training at LCBI at Outlook. In 1942, he married Ardis G. Letmolee of Preeceville and they settled on the Sandager farm. Norris served the North Prairie congregation as president and Sunday school superintendent, Bethel Bible teacher and choir member. During the last year he had served as adult Bible teacher at the Preeceville Pentecostal Church. He was a member of the Yorkton Gideon Camp. Predeceased by his mother Olena, in 1937 and his father, Julius in 1950, he is survived by his wife; three daughters, Ruth (Norman) Miller of Calgary, Carol Durocher of Edmonton and Gloria McLlmoyl of Brooklin, ON; a son, Robert of Preeceville; two sisters, Mildred and Elsie and four grandchildren. SANDAGER � Julius Sandager was in 1883 at Belview, Minnesota and immigrated to the North Prairie homestead 1910-11. He married Lena Braum October 1, 1911. Julius helped build the first telephone line in the area. He was active in church and civic affairs. He helped organize the wheat pool and was on its board of directors, also the union hospital, Co-op store and Credit Union. During W.W II he worked in a foundry in Vancouver, BC. He then sold Co-op oil and Insurance in Preeceville. H died of a heart attack in 1950 while on an errand of mercy to the hospital. He is buried at the North Prairie Cemetery. SANDAGER � Lena was born in 1885 in Sacred Heart, Minn. She immigrated to North Prairie with the Braum family. She married Julius Sandager in 1911. She was buried by her husband in the North Prairie Cemetery. Laura Gronlid was born of parents, Rev. and Mrs. J. M. Gronlid at Hatton, North Dakota, where she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She married Otto Severson of Scarville, Iowa in 1911. With their two children they moved to Canada in 1915, to a farm in the North Prairie district. In 1929, they returned to Iowa and in 1934 they moved back to the North Prairie district, where they lived until retiring eight years ago and moved to Preeceville. Predeceased by her husband in 1967 and an infant son in 1920, a grandchild, Bonnie Severson; her parents; a sister, Anna and a brother Rev. Hjalmer Gronlid, she is survived by two sons, Melbourne of Vacavil�s, Calif, and Virgil of Red Deer, AB; five grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Oline Gustafson, Henrietta Gronlid, Cornelia Gronlid and Thora Borlaug all of Minneapolis, Hjerdis Puls of Iowa and Ester Sorenson of Waukon, Iowa and a brother, Rev Isaac Gronlid of La Crescent, Minn. SEVERSON - Otto Severson was born in 1885. He married his wife, Laura Gronlid in Mason City, Iowa in 1911. They spent their first four years in the States, where Otto was a barber and restaurant owner. In 1915 they came to Canada, with their two young sons, Melbourne and Virgil, and settled on a homestead in the North Prairie district. In 1929, they returned to the States so that Virgil could complete his education. They moved back to Canada in 1934. Otto did a lot of auctioneering in the area and was the janitor of the North Prairie Church. He sold his farm in 1961 and retired to Preeceville. Otto passed away in 1967 and was buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. SIMES � Amy Eleanor Simes age 84, of Yorkton and formerly of the Preeceville district, passed away on January 23, 2006 at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre after a brief illness. Funeral was held at St. John-North Prairie Lutheran Church with Pastor Carlyle Johnson officiating. Burial was in North Prairie Cemetery. Born on August 28, 1921, in the North Prairie district to John and Mattie Thorson, she attended Beaver Falls School. She also attended bible school in Outlook. She worked on the family farm and for several neighbors. She had a job in the kitchen at a hotel in Regina. When she returned to Preeceville, she worked on the Thorson farm until December of 1987. She was a member of the Lutheran Daughters of the Reformation, the Lutheran League and she sang in the choir. She married Gordon Simes on November 9, 1972 in Red Deer. Predeceased by her parents, her husband Gordon, and a sister, Esther Thorson, she is survived by three brothers, Tyler, Marlo and Edgar (Doreen) all of Preeceville. SIMES � Gordon Arthur Simes, 80, of Yorkton and formerly of Preeceville, passed away on Jan. 5th. Services were held from St. John Lutheran Church in Preeceville. Burial was in North Prairie Cemetery. Born on September 23, 1924 in Canora to Arthur and Josephine (Solen) Simes, he attended school in Sturgis. He worked on the family farm in the Robertson Creek district and he worked for a number of local farmers. He worked in logging camps in SK and loaded grain at the Thunder Bay terminal in Ontario. He married Amy Thorson on Nov. 9, 1972. He was employed at the Thorson farm, until he retired in December of 1987 and moved to Yorkton. Predeceased by his parents and a sister Lyla Argue, he is survived by his wife Amy; and three brothers, Ken Marvin (Sheila) and Vernon of Saskatoon. SKRUKRUD � Albert Skrukrud was born in 1877 in Minnesota, and his childhood was spent there. He married Clara Braum at Sacred Heart, Minn. district. They emigrated to Canada in 1906 and filed on their homestead north of Preeceville. In 1911, they left the homestead and made their home in Preeceville, where Albert, together with Oscar Mattison, had a garage for many years. Albert and Clara had one child, Adelyn, born in Granite Falls, Minnesota. Adelyn married Graham Robertson and had two daughters, Barbara and Mary. Albert and Clara died tragically in 1951 from a fire in their home caused by an electrical shortage. They are both buried at the North Prairie Cemetery. STRAND - Alva Irene Strand was born January 9, 1919 to parents Fred and Mathilda Strand. She was a baptized member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church. She was a delicate child and had asthma attacks all her life. Alva was a brilliant scholar and had very unusual musical talent. After hearing a piece of music on the radio, she could soon play it on the organ. Her parents bought her a piano, which she played beautifully. At age 10 years she played for a wedding and later served as organist. At age thirteen she contracted pneumonia and died March 20, 1932 shortly before completing the eighth grade. She is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. STRAND � Fred Stand was born at Terrace, Minn. in Pope County, June 29, 1884, of parents Andrew and Anna (Jensen) Strand. He grew up on a farm together with his brothers and sisters. In 1903, he married Mathilda Rosaasen of Sacred Heart, Minn. On June 8, 1905 Mr. and Mrs. Strand and son Herbert, aged 1 � years settled on their homestead in the North Prairie district. In 1907 Fred�s application to have the post office in their home was accepted and they had the Strand post office until 1915, On December 31, 1908 he was appointed Justice of the Peace and held that post until 1944. The first Lutheran worship service was held at the Strand on February 6, 1906. Mr. Strand served on the North Prairie school board from its beginning, as secretary for 2 years, and as chairman from 1911 to 1936. He was the first insurance agent in the area, selling for the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Co. from 1916 until his death. He was also a clerk at many auction sales. His fee for the day was $5. He also had the sad task of making a casket for their daughter Alva, who died at the age of 13 in 1932. Mr. and Mrs. Strand had eleven children: Herbert Allan James Strand, Ernest Millard Strand, Frances Marion, Wilfred Palmer, Lillian Julia, Evelyn Vivian, Doris Hannah, Alva Irene, Phyllis Claretta, Lorne Ronald (Shirley) Verna Fay Gwendolyn STRAND � Wilfred Palmer Strand was born December 31, 1909 at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Strand, in the North Prairie district. He attended North Prairie School and Business College at Saskatoon. He enlisted and served with the Canadian armed forces in the Second World War. In 1937, he married Phyllis Law of Preeceville. They farmed in North Prairie until 1956 when they and their seven children moved to Vancouver, where he worked until his retirement. After spending a year in hospital with T.B he was a resident at the Cameo Rest Home for the past several years. He died on November 23, 1988 at a Vancouver hospital after a short illness. Bill struggled with economic difficulties all his life, working hard to make ends meet. Often this meant long absences from his home to live in work camps, yet he maintained as close a tie to family and old friends as possible. He was easy to be around and his teasing humor and willingness to help made him popular. He loved the out of doors; trapping, hunting and fishing were his favorite recreation. He was an avid sports fan and kept abreast of current affairs. He was a member of the Canadian Legion. His mathematical ability, his good health and his sense of self-pride stood out. Predeceased by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters; he is survived by Phyllis and their children: two sons, Wilfred and Herbert; and 5 daughters, Carole Edwards, Myrna Burke, Donna Kidd and Susan Young all of BC and Sharon Blesse of Brooks, AB; one brother, Lorne and 5 sisters, Evelyn Phoenix and Doris Rosten, all of Preeceville, Lillian Soehleen of Madison, Wisconsin, Phyllis Anderson of Edmonton and Verna Walker of Winnipeg; 21 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. SUNBERG � Eleanor Sundberg age 82, of Preeceville, died on November 7, 1978 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral was held in the United Church in Preeceville and burial in North Prairie Cemetery. She was born in 1896 at La Fayette, Minn., the daughter of Christian and Carrie Sjuberg. She came to Canada with her parents and siblings, in 1906 and settled at Mozart, SK, later moving to farm in the Canora district. She married Carl Sundberg in 1916. In 1923, they moved to a farm in the Preeceville district and in 1937 to Bertwell. They retired in 1964 and moved to Preeceville. In 1966, Eleanor moved to the Lions Hostel. Predeceased by her parents; a sister; a son, Glen in 1937, and her husband in 1965, she is survived by a daughter, Elsie Currie of Preeceville; two sons, Randolph of Edmonton and Leonard of Swan River; two brothers, Willie Sjuberg of Endeavour and Ralph Sjuberg of Drayton Valley, AB; 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. THORSON � Esther Lucille Thorson 80, of Yorkton and formerly of Preeceville North Prairie district, died on December 14 in Yorkton. Services were held at the St. John-North Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial was in North Prairie Cemetery. Born September 18, 1924 to John and Mattie (Sandager) Thorson on the family farm in the North Prairie district, she moved with her family to the present Thorson farm, two miles south of the North Prairie Church. She was educated at Beaver Falls School (grades 1-10) and Preeceville grade 11 and Regina grade 12. She worked as a secretary and drug store assistant in Spiritwood before entering the St. Boniface School of Nursing, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1951. She worked as a nurse in Winnipeg and an operating room nurse in Vancouver before returning to Sask. in the 1970�s where she worked at Canora Union Hospital until 1977. After that she worked administration at Red Deer General Hospital (1977-1980), supervisor of nursing administration and associate director of nursing, Yorkton Union Hospital (1980) In 1982 she became director of nursing which she held until her retirement in 1989.Predeceased by her parents, she is survived by three brothers, Tyler, Marlo and Edgar (Doreen) all of the North Prairie district and one sister Amy (Gordon) Simes of Yorkton. THORSON - Gullick Thorson was born in 1868 in Telemark, Norway, the eldest of five children. Gullick left family and homeland at 18 for the States. After some years in Iowa, he made his way to Minnesota. He married Hulda Moen. In 1906 Gullick, Hulda and their daughter Agnes immigrated to Canada. They spent a year with his brother John and then moved to their own homestead in 1907. In 1912 Gullick bought the Skrukrud homestead. The Johnson homestead was purchased in 1934. In 1927 they built the new farm home. Two infant daughters died from pneumonia, one being Edna�s twin. Thorson children; Agnes, Gladys (Harold Widdis), Erling Edna (deceased 1940), Ethel (Ted Roberts) Gerard (Jennie), Florence (Frank Klemmer), Bernice ( Mel Monson), Inez (Neil Parent) Carlyle (Rita) After a brief illness in a Winnipeg Hospital Gullick died on August 12, 1928 and is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery THORSON � Hulda Thorson, 89 of Regina and formerly of Preeceville, died on October 2, 1975 at Wascana Hospital in Regina. Born in Norway, she moved to the U.S to Sacred Heart, Minn., and in 1906 with her husband, Gullick Thorson, came to Canada to homestead in the North Prairie district. They were among the founding members of the North Prairie Lutheran congregation and she was an active member of the Ladies Aid of the Church. Following the death of Mr. Thorson in 1928, she continued to live on the farm until 1945, and lived with members of her family until 1952, when she moved to Preeceville where she resided until 1960. She moved to Calgary to reside with a daughter, Ethel for six years and in 1966 went to live with a daughter, Agnes in Regina. She was a patient at the Wascana Hospital for the last 7 1/2 years. Predeceased by her husband, two daughters in infancy and a daughter, Edna in 1940, she is survived by three sons, Erling of Sarnia, Gerhad of Nipawin and Carlyle of Calgary; six daughters, Agnes of Regina, Ethel Roberts of Calgary, Florence Klemer of Toronto, Bernice Monson of Flin Flon, Inez Parent of Vancouver and Gladys Widdis of Norwood, Ont; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. THORSON � John Thorson was born in 1876 at Telemark, Norway. Due to difficulty in acquiring land in Norway as land ownership was by a few large landowners, he decided to immigrate to America where his older brother Gullick had gone a few years before. While in central Minn. he decided to go to Canada in 1905 and homesteaded in the North Prairie district. In 1920, John married Mattie Sandager. They lived on the homestead until 1926, when they purchased land in the Beaver Falls school district. It was here they established the farmstead that is presently operated by the family. John was an active member of the North Prairie Church. He was a councilor of the R.M of Preeceville and a trustee of the Beaver Falls School district for many years. John died in 1950 and is buried in the North Prairie Cemetery. THORSON - Mattie Thorson age 86, of Preeceville, passed away August 26, 1975 in the Preeceville Hospital, following a long illness. Funeral service held in the North Prairie Lutheran Church with Pastor Dan Haugen officiating. Mattie Katherine Thorson was born to Nels and Ellen Sandager at Belview, Minn. She grew up in the Belview district and was confirmed in 1904 by Pastor A. Aason. She attended college at Wilmar, Minn. and received a diploma for teaching public school in 1906. She came to Canada in 1911 and lived in Alberta for several years before moving to the North Prairie district. In 1920 she was united in marriage to John Thorson at Edmonton. Her brother, Rev. Christian Sandager officiated. They resided on her husband�s homestead in the North Prairie district 1926 when they moved to the present farm. Mrs. Thorson was a member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church and was an active member of the Ladies Aid of the Church. Predeceased by hr husband in 1950, a sister, Johanna (Mrs. George Hanson), three brothers, Martin, Julius and Christian, she is survived by two daughters, Esther and Amy (Mrs. Gordon Simes) and three sons, Tyler, Marlo and Edgar. THORSON � Tyler Norman Thorson was born to John and Mattie Thorson on their homestead in North Prairie district on September 29, 1922. He was baptized and confirmed in the North Prairie Lutheran Church. In 1926 the family moved to the current farm in the Beaver Falls district where he lived until he took up residence in Preeceville in 2006. He received his education at the Beaver Falls School. Then he continued to work until health issues made him decrease his activities in active farm work. Still, he never lost his interest in farming and whether he phoned from Yorkton, the duplex or one of the hospitals, his first question would be �What�s happening on the farm?� Edgar�s cell phone in the 2007 seeding season put on 340 minutes with many of those calls being from Tyler! Tyler farmed his whole life except the winter of 1948 when he worked with the late Knut Holmes in the bush near Jim Lake. On the farm he had his special jobs. In his younger years it was seeding with horses, then later with various drills and tractors. During the dairy era his domain was the calf barn and feeding the calves. During the harvest he ran the threshing machine or the combine and he insisted on being the main operator of the various self-propelled hay-cutting machines. The thing that Tyler enjoyed were: his purebred quarter horse, Amigo, which he rode and also showed at fairs winning ribbons for his beautiful horse and saddle. He also enjoyed his three new Ford trucks, his Honda ATV and in earlier years his shiny green 600 John Deere snowmobile. He liked to hunt and fish when time permitted and took great pride in the care of his guns and fishing rods. While not a frequent traveler, he did enjoy his trip to Norway with his late sister, Esther, to visit relatives, his trip to Nashville and Branson with his good friend Pauline and many trips to the West Coast to visit several of his cousins. He also enjoyed the many visitors who came to the farm to fish, hunt snowmobile or just to visit. Tyler served his community on several boards: the North Prairie church, the Beaver Falls Snowplow Club, the Preeceville Co-op and the Preeceville Sask. Pool Elevator. He had an appreciation for the care he received at the Regina General Hospital and was a generous donator to the renovation fund. He still held memberships in the National Farmers Union (for 31 years), the New Democratic Party and the Sask. Wildlife Association. In the last few years Tyler had health problems with his heart, lungs and eyesight, which put a severe limitation on his activities. He passed away peacefully on Monday, December 3, 2007 in the Preeceville Hospital. Tyler was predeceased by his parents, John and Mattie Thorson; his sister and brother-in-law Amy and Gordon Simes and his sister, Ester. He leaves to mourn his brothers, Marlo and Edgar (Doreen); his good friend Pauline Romanyshyn; several cousins and their families. Funeral Service was held Dec. 8 at the St. John-North Prairie Lutheran Church. Interment followed in the North Prairie Lutheran Cemetery. |
