BECK � Wilbert (Bill) John Beck 69, of Hazel Dell, died on June 26, 2006 in Preeceville. Funeral held at Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born on August 22, 1936, in Calder to Alex and Katie Beck, he attended Calder School. He worked as an elevator agent in Hazel Dell until 1966 and then worked in mines in Manitoba, the Yukon, SK, northern Ontario and the NWT until he retired in 1991. Predeceased by his parents; a brother Walter; a half-brother Gordon, he is survived by three sons, Jim of Pincher Creek, Terry of Edmonton and Brent of Rocky Mountain House, AB; a sister, Tara (Steven) May of Winnipeg; a sister Kay (Fred) Balak of Grandview and six grandchildren. BURKATSKY � Nick Burkatsky, 74 of Preeceville, died on October 3, 1976. Funeral was held in the Ukrainian Catholic Church at Hazel Dell. Born in the Ukraine, he came to Canada with his parents in 1910. In 1935, he married Francis Paslowski and they farmed in the Hazel Dell district until moving to Preeceville in 1946. Predeceased by two brothers, Mike and Bill and a sister Minnie Yakewchuk of Canora in 1931, he is survived by four brothers, Sam of Preeceville, Jim of Winnipeg, Alex of Outlook and Joe of Oshawa; a son Lorne of Hazel Dell; a daughter, Minnie (Russel) Tomrack of Vancouver and five grandchildren. CHALUPIAK � Billie Chalupiak 70, of Hazel Dell, died on November 1, 1991 in Regina General Hospital. Funeral held in St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church Hazel Dell. Born on March 6, 1921 in the Ketchen district, he was educated at Woodrock and Nettie Hills Schools. On May 31, 1941 he married Stella Luciw in Chechow Church. They moved to Pickle Crow, Ontario where he worked in a mine. He then enlisted in the army. After he was discharged he worked in a mine at Flin Flon, MN. Later he moved to Hazel Dell, where he owned and operated a hotel for 17 years. He sold the hotel in 1965 and worked for South Construction until 1981 when he retired. He had been a school trustee. Predeceased by his father, Bill; his step father, Steve; his mother, Stella; and a brother and sister in infancy, he is survived by his wife; two sons, Bob of Thunder Bay and Larry of Canora; a daughter Marlene Dyky of Hazel Dell; four brothers, Walter of Ketchen, Joe of Preeceville, Mike of Preeceville and William of Yorkton; two sisters, Mary (John) Sawka of Yorkton and Ann Satherstrom of Sudbury, Ontario; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. CHOPTY � Anna Chopty of Preeceville and formerly of Lady Lake, passed away in August 3, 2007 in Preeceville Hospital. Annie was the eldest daughter of Nick and Catherine Maranchuk, born on March 6, 1917, in Grandview, MN. She moved to Hazel Dell in 1924 and married Bill Chopty in 1937. They lived in Hazel Dell from 1939 until 1942. Following 1942 she moved to a number of different places for a few years, settling in Lady Lake in 1947. In 1952 she became the postmistress until the post office closed in 1970. She then moved to Preeceville. Annie was a talented seamstress, sewing for many of her neighbors and friends. She sewed wedding dresses, suits and gowns, without using patterns, as well as nurse�s uniforms and bedspreads for the Swan River Hospital. Annie supplied all family members with cabbage rolls, pyrogies and beet soup. The high light of the year was Christmas Eve supper at her home. Annie was predeceased by hr parents; a son Nick, in infancy; husband Bill; son-in-law Albert; a brother Bill; sisters, Olga and Polly. She is survived by daughters, Polly (Ralph), Minnie (Ed), Jane; sisters, Belle Minnie (Alfred), Carol; brothers, Walter and Ed. CHOPTY � William Chopty, 81 of Preeceville and formerly of Lady Lake, passed away December 6, 1992 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Funeral held at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born on June 29, 1911 on a farm near Hazel Dell to George and Caroline (Swiski) Chopty, he was educated at Orange Vale School. Prior to 1944, he worked on his father�s farm and for threshing crews in the area. During the winter months he would make shingles, saw wood and grind fee grain. From 1944 to 1980, he worked for Canadian national Railways. Upon retiring, he and his wife built a new home in Preeceville. He was a past president of the Lady Lake hall board and the chairman of the Lady Lake sports committee. Predeceased by a son, Nick in 1939, his father, George in 1956, his mother, Caroline in 1956, two brothers, Tom in 1945 and Metro in 1975 and two sisters, Nellie Maksymiw and Annie Magera; he is survived by his wife, Ann; three daughters, Polly Wardle of Melville, Minnie (Ed) Zimmer and Jane (Albert) Antonichuk of Preeceville; two sisters, Bessie Zayanch (Dan) Kowski of Hazel Dell and Mary (John) Magera of Foam Lake; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. JENSEN � Einar Jensen, 86 of Preeceville, died on May 7, 1991 in Preeceville Hospital. Born June 20, 1904 in Nanstad, Norway, he attended Lone Spruce School. On July 24, 1926 he married Mary Sloychuk and they lived in the Hazel Dell area. He was employed by the CNR from 1923-1946. After this he worked for several farmers in the Hazel Dell area. He resided with Joe and Florence Nawroski from 1978 until December 23, 1985 when he entered the Lions Hostel in Preeceville. Predeceased by his parents and two sisters, he is survived by his wife, Mary of Atikokan, ON; two sons, Alfred (Margot) of Sarnia, ON and Kenneth (Diane) of Toronto; a brother, Ole (Iva) of Preeceville and four grandsons. KNASH � Annie (Maksymiw) Knash, 82, of Edmonton and formerly of Preeceville, passed away November 8, 1994 in Youville Home, Edmonton. Funeral held in St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born on December 7, 1911 in Hazel Dell, she was educated at Lone Spruce School, Hazel Dell. She married Mike Knash in 1935. They farmed four miles south of Hazel Dell from 1935 to 1973, when she retired to Preeceville, after the death of her husband. Predeceased by her parents, her husband, Mike in 1973, two brothers, Mike and Paul, she is survived by three sons, Walter (Leona) of St. Catharines, ON, Rudy (Phyllis) of Brandon and Ed (Jennifer) of Edmonton; two sisters, Maggie of Preeceville and Mary of Red Deer; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. KNASH � John Knash 77, of Detroit, Michigan and formerly of Buchanan, died on April 6, 1981. Burial was in the Hazel Dell Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. Born in 1904, to Ted and Mary Knash of the Buchanan district, he received his education there and spent his youth on the family farm. While still a young man, he moved to Detroit, where he owned and operated a restaurant for a number of years. He was also engaged in the general contracting business for about 15 years. Predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Mike and George, he is survived by a daughter in Florida; three brothers, Paul of Preeceville and William and Harry both of Hazel Dell, and two sisters, Annie Zawislak of Canora and Lena Lysak of Vancouver. KNASH � Paul Knash, 87 of Preeceville, passed away July 11, 1996 in Preeceville Hospital. The son of Ted and Maria (Marteniuk) Knash, he was born on August 8 1908 on a farm north of Buchanan. When he was a young child, his parents relocated to the Hazel Dell district. He did not have the opportunity to attend school. He helped on his father�s farm and later lived with his brother Bill�s family. He also worked on the CN extra gang. He became a resident of the Lion�s Hostel in 1976. Predeceased by his parents and three brothers, John, Mike and George, he is survived by two sisters, Annie Zawislak of Canora and Lena Lesyk of Castlegar, BC and two brothers, Bill of Preeceville and Harry of Hazel Dell. KNASH � William Knash, 80, of Preeceville and formerly of Hazel Dell, died on March 3, 1997 at the Preeceville Lions Hostel. Funeral was held in the chapel of Preeceville Funeral Home. Born on March 24, 1916 in Hazel Dell, he attended Lone Spruce School. He married Mary Novakowski in 1940, and took over the family farm. He was a cattle dealer for many years. In 1968, he purchased John Pasiechnyk's general store, which he operated for two years. A member of the school board, he also served as councillor for the RM of Hazel Dell. He became a resident of Preeceville Lions Hostel in 1983. Predeceased by his parents, Tytos and Maria (Martyniuk) Knash, four brothers, John, Paul, Mike and George, a son Eddy, and a great-grandson, he is survived by one son, Nestor (Phyllis) of Langenburg; one daughter, Verna (Fred) Swiderski of Invermay; one brother, Harry (Lena) of Hazel Dell; two sisters, Anne Zawislak of Canora and Lena Lysak of Castlegar, BC; six grandchilden and three great-grandchildren. KOWASKI � Carl Kowaski, 84, of Hazel Dell and formerly of the Silver Springs area, died on July 7, 1989 at his residence. Funeral held in the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born on May 27, 1905 in Nova Scotia, he moved to Invermay district with his parents, Jacob and Sophie Kowaski, as a child and attended Silver Springs School. Due to the hard times of the depression era, he left school at an early age to seek employment. He worked for the railway and as a farm labourer until he had saved enough money to buy his own homestead, then moved to a farm in the Hazel Dell district, where he farmed until retiring and moving to that community. On November 17, 1933 he was united in marriage to Annie Radawetz in a home at Invermay. Predeceased by a daughter, Mary Ann in 1947, his parents, three brothers, Nick, John and Frank, and a sister, Francis, he is survived by his wife, Annie of Hazel Dell; three sons, Alex, (Josephine) of Winnipeg, John (Mary) of Beaverlodge, AB and Carl of Yorkton; a daughter, Olga (Nick) Belous of Hazel Dell; two brothers, Mike of Winnipeg and Joe of Grande Prairie; three sisters, Sophie Barteski of Yorkton, Annie Lysy of Winnipeg and Helen Gallant of Sudbury, ON; 10 grandchildren an a great grandchild. LUCIOW � Annie Luciow, 82 of Kelvington and formerly of the Lintlaw district, died on April 25, 1994 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Funeral held Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born on November 28, 1916 in the RM of Hazel Dell, she married Mike Luciow on June 25, 1937. They farmed for 37 years on a half-section near Lintlaw and retired to Kelvington in 1974. She was a member of a birthday club and was known for making quilts. Predeceased by her parents, Wasyl and Julia Sochan, and husband Mike in 1980, she is survived by two sons, William and Joseph; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. LUCIW � Peter Luciw was born on April 9, 1925 on the family farm in the Preeceville district. Peter was the eldest son of John and Annie Luciw of Hazel Dell. Peter attended Orange Vale School. In his younger years, he worked at various jobs in SK, On, BC and Manitoba, which created some really good memories and some very good stories. He married Nettie Radawetz in August of 1958. They moved to Winnipeg for a brief period where their only daughter Tammy was born. They eventually returned to make their home in Hazel Dell. Sadly, Peter�s wife Nettie passed away in 1967. Peter continued to make his home in Hazel Dell until his passing. He enjoyed his retirement years by filling his days with activities that he loved such as spending lots of time with his daughter Tammy and her partner Larry Chometa of Saskatoon, playing the fiddle, taking long walks, pattern dancing. He also enjoyed spending time with his nine brothers and sisters, who he cared for dearly. Peter passed away March 4, 2007 at the University Hospital in Saskatoon. He is survived by his daughter Tammy, his sisters Stella Chalupiak, Mary (Metro) Antonio, Carolle Pasiechnik, Pauline Urechko; brothers, Mike, Bill, Joe, and Steve; MADARASH � Dmetro Madarash, 83 of Lintlaw, passed away November 11, 1994 in Kelvington Hospital. Born on September 25, 1911 to Paul and Martha Madarash in the Hazel Dell district, he attended Woodrock School. He helped his mother on the family farm. On May 26, 1933 he married Paraskevia (Polly) Firman. They farmed in the Hazel Dell district until 1948, when the family moved to Lintlaw to operate a caf�. He hauled gas for North Star and later sought employment in Radium City in the mines. In 1954, the family bought a farm west and south of Lintlaw. He worked for the CNR from 1956 to 1976 when he retired and returned to helping on the family farm. His pastimes included: dancing, playing cards, visiting and caring for animals, especially his chickens. Predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Pete and Mike, three sisters, Helen, Agnes and Alice in infancy, and a son Paul, he is survived by his wife, Polly; a son, Joseph (Julia) of Lintlaw; two sisters, Mary Maksymiw and Annie Sundak, both of Vernon, BC; and three grandchildren. MADARASH � Joseph Madarash, 67 of Lintlaw, and formerly of Hazel Dell, passed away March 9, 2004 in Lintlaw. Funeral held at the Lintlaw recreation Centre and burial in Hazel Dell. He as born on September 25, 1936, in the Hazel Dell district to Dmytro and Polly Madarash. He attended Shaftsbury and Lintlaw schools. His family had moved to Lintlaw where they purchased the Lintlaw caf�. The family later sold the caf� and moved to a farm west of Lintlaw. In his younger years, he worked at a variety of jobs such as a saw mill labourer in BC, and a farm hand in the Lintlaw and Preeceville areas. He purchased the BA bulk fuel station in Lintlaw. While operating the station, he invested in a mink ranch with several relatives. In the 1960�s, he sold the bulk fuel station, purchased some land and took up mink ranching on a larger scale. He married Julia Baran in Preeceville in 1963. When the demand for fur declined, they sold their interests and continued to operate a mixed farm until 1994 whey they semi-retired. In 1997, they moved to Lintlaw. He was an active Lions Club member. Predeceased by his father, Dmytro, and a brother Paul, he is survived by his wife, Julia; a daughter, Joanne (Garry) Clarke of Saskatoon and three grandchildren. MADARASH � Paul Madarash, 78 of Lintlaw, passed away December 18, 1992 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Funeral held at St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born in Lintlaw area to Metro and Polly Madarash, he was educated at Shaftbury School in Hazel Dell. When he was 13 years old, his family moved to Calder, where he helped in the family store and attended school. A year later, his family purchased a caf� in Lintlaw. He worked on railway construction in the Lynn Lake area and during the winter months he would work in the timber industry in BC. In 1954, his family purchased a farm near Lintlaw and besides working on the family farm, he worked for various threshing crews, sawmills and tried mink ranching. He continued to farm until poor health forced him to retire recently. He was a member of the Lintlaw School board. He is survived by his wife, Loretta, his parents, two sons, Anthony and Russell of Lintlaw and a brother, Joe (Julia) of Lintlaw. MADARASH � Paraskevia "Polly" (nee Firman) Madarash passed away at the Kelvington hospital at the age of 94. Polly was born on January 25, 1917 in the Hazel Dell area to Mary and Joseph Firman. Polly and tow siblings Annie (Oryszczyn) and William Firman lived in a small home in an area 6 miles north of Hazel Dell. They were a farming family living in a rugged Sask. area. They worked hard as a family and found time to socialize with friends who also had traveled from Ukraine and settle in the area. Polly as a young girl, worked on the farm and learned delicate handwork such as embroidery, sewing, decorating in the Ukrainian culture, knitting raw wool socks that ate still family favorites. Polly at the age of 17, met Dmytro Madarash, love blossomed and they married on Mary 27, 1934. To this union they were bless with two handsome sons, Paul and Joseph. They raised their sons on a farm east of the Hazel dell cemetery. When the boys were older the family operated a store in Calder, SK. Three years later the family took over the caf� business from Polly�s parents in Lintlaw for a few years. Soon the family realized their hearts desired the farm life and they built a beautiful home 2 � west of Lintlaw in 1954. This home and farm was home for Polly until June 2011. Polly was predeceased by her husband Dmytro; their tow sons, Paul and Joseph; brother Bill Firman; sister Annie Oryszczyn and; She is survived by daughter in law Loretta Madarash and her grandsons, Tony of Lacombe, AB and Russell Madarash of Brooks, AB and daughter-in-law Julie Madarash and granddaughter Joanne and husband Garry Clarke; great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Courtney and Creighton of Saskatoon. MAKSYMIW � Nellie Maksymiw, 69 of Hazel Dell, died on July 25, 1990 in the Preeceville Hospital. Born September 25, 1920 in Canora, she was educated at Orange Vale School. She was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church women�s group. In 1937, she married Mike Maksymiw at Canora. Predeceased by her parents in 1956; a daughter, Deanna in infancy in 1946; her husband Mike in 1969 and two half-brothers, Metro Chopty in 1975 and Tom Chopty in 1945, she is survived by a daughter, Elaine Pasiechnyk of Saskatoon; three sons, Jim and Terry of Preeceville and Jack of Yorkton; a brother, Bill Chopty of Preeceville; three sisters, Annie Magera of Foam Lake, Mary Magera of Foam Lake and Bessie Zayanchkowski of Hazel Dell; and six grandchildren. MATLOCK � William Matlock, 75 of Sturgis and formerly of Hazel Dell and Lintlaw districts, died on March 5, 2003 in Saskatoon University Hospital. Funeral held in the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born January 27, 1928 to Mike and Anne Matlock in Poland, he immigrated to Canada with his parents and attended Partridge Hill School until grade five. He farmed with his father until he got a job on the power lines between Sheridan and Snow Lake. He farmed near Hazel Dell first, then near Lintlaw until 1978. When he became ill, he moved to a special care home in Sturgis, where he resided until his passing. On November 11, 1948 he married Pauline Kwiatkowski and they were later divorced. Predeceased by his father in 1952 and his mother in 1979, three daughters, Carrie in 1951, and Sharon and Susan in 1963, he is survived by two sons, Harold of Hudson Bay and Michael of Lloydminister; one sister, Mary Cavalier of Burnaby, BC and two grandchildren. MOCYK � Daisy Mocyk, 84 of Preeceville, died on April 6, 2003 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Humbolt. Funeral held at the Hazel Dell Ukrainian Catholic Church. Born on April 18, 1918 in Hazel Dell, she attended Turnout School, north of Hazel Dell. She worked on a dairy farm and as a housemaid until she met Peter Mocyk. They were married on July 18, 1942 at St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. She was a church committee member and member of the Ladies club. Predeceased by her father Mike Yednak in 1962; her mother Annie in 1974; a sister Irene in 1948 and her husband peter on April 4, 1996, she is survived by a son, Ron (Annette) of Rama; three daughters, Minnie (Peter) Pasiechnik of Marysville, BC, Joyce Daschuk (Bill) of Sturgis and Sylvia Mocyk (Richard) of Nelson, BC; three sisters, Lena Prosko of Wadena, Mary Worobetz of Preeceville and Stella (Walter) Petrowski of Saskatoon. MOCYK � Peter Paul Mocyk, 74 of Sturgis, passed away on April 4, 1996 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held April 9th in St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was born on May 19, 1921 to Metro and Amelia (Nowakowski) Mocyk in Hazel Dell. He attended Halycry School. At a young age he discovered a talent for music and played a violin in a band. On July 18, 1942, he married Daisy Yednak at Buchach Church, Hazel Dell. They homesteaded in the Hazel Dell district. He tried his hand at mining in Copper Mountain, BC, but returned to the farm. At one point he worked for the CN but soon returned to farming. After retiring he continued to live on the farm and help his son, Ron. In the fall of 1995 illness forced him to move into Sturgis. NASH - Mike Knash, 61 of the Hazel Dell district, was killed August 29, 1973 at about noon in a farm accident. Mr. Knash was swathing when his pantleg got caught in the power-take-off. His farm is 4 1/2 miles south of Hazel Dell. Funeral service was held in the Ukrainian Catholic Church at Hazel Dell. Mr. Knash was born in Hazel Dell and was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tedo Knash. He married Anne Maksymiw in 1935 and farmed in the Hazel Dell district. Predeceased by a brother, George in 1969, he is survived by his wife; three sons, Walter of St. Catharines, Rudy of Brandon and Eddie of Red Deer; four brothers, Bill and Harry of Hazel Dell, John of Detroit and Paul of Preeceville; two sisters, Anne Zawislak of Canora and Lena Lesyk of Vernon. NURKOWSKI � Stella (nee Potorieko) Nurkowski, 63 of the Rama district, passed away June 28, 1996, at the Canora Hospital, Funeral service held in St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. She was born December 2, 1932 in the Invermay district to Nicholas and Anastasia (Pesko) Potorieko. She attended Locksloy School, north of Invermay. On May 6, 1952, she married Stanley Nurkowski in Rama and they began farming in the area. She worked on the family farm until 1966 when they purchased the Hazel Dell grocery store. She managed the store while her husband looked after the farm. After being in business for 29 years, the store sold in 1995 and she returned to work on the farm. She was an active member o the Hazel Dell recreation board. Predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Andrew in infancy, Mike and Metro and two sisters, Helen in infancy and Annie, she is survived by her husband, Stanley; six sons, Julian (Marlene) of Shorewood, Illinois, John (Kim) of Calgary, Nathaniel (Arla Rae) of San Antonio, Texas. Linus of Fort McMurray, Kelvin (Kelly) of Slave Lake and Deonne of Regina; two daughters, Lucinda Goulden of Regina and Darlene (Neil) Anderson of Eyebrow; two brothers, Steve (Lena) Potorieko of Invermay and John (Diane) Potorieko of Carrot River; a sister, Mary (Paul) Yawney of Yorkton and 12 grandchildren. ORYSZCZYN � Alex Oryszczyn, 73 of Lintlaw, passed away September 9, 1980. Funeral service held in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church at Hazel Dell. He was born in Buryka, Hebawicewki, Poland and came to Canada at the age of 21, under the sponsorship of his eldest sister, the late Mrs. Anna Sochan of Detroit. He spent the first several years logging in the winter and harvesting grain in the autumn. He married Annie Firman at Hazel Dell in 1932 and they lived with her parents for the first years of their marriage. The couple then set up a homestead north of Hazel Dell, and after 12 years of farming, the family moved to Lintlaw, where he worked as a section man with the CNR, until his retirement. He was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church at Hazel Dell. Predeceased by his parents in Europe and his sister in Detroit, he is survived by his wife; a son, Bill and a daughter, Mary Rogowski, both of Lintlaw and three grandchildren. ORYSZCZYN � Annie Oryszczyna, 92 of Lintlaw and formerly of Ketchen, died on October 31, 2004 in her own home. Funeral was held at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born on July 1, 1912 to Mary and Joseph Firman in a small log house near Ketchen, six miles north of Hazel Dell. She married Alex Oryszczyn on February19, 1932. They lived with her parents for two years before moving two miles north to their own farm. For the next 18 years they milked 18 cows, shipped cream to Preeceville and cut wood in the winter to sell. The family moved to Lintlaw in 1948 where they operated a caf� for one year In 1949 they purchased the Red and White Store in Lintlaw. Annie worked in the store while Alex worked for the CN railway. She was a member of the Lintlaw Golden Glory Club and a parishioner of St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic Church at Hazel Dell. Predeceased by her husband in 1980, her son Bill in 1998, she is survived by her daughter, Mary (Matt) Rogowski, one brother, Bill (Mary) Firman and one sister, Polly Madarash, all of Lintlaw. Three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. PASIECHNYK � Andrew Pasiechnyk 82 of Preeceville and formerly of Hazel Dell, passed away on August 9, 1985 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held at St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church at Hazel Dell. Born on March 22, 1903 in the village of Tarnapol, county of Buchach, in the Ukraine, to William and Barbara Pasiechnik. He was educated in Ukraine. He married Barbara Yednak in the Ukraine and they immigrated to Canada and took up a homestead in the Hazel Dell district and farmed till his retirement in 1962. RADAWETZ � Anna Radawetz aged 95, of Hazel Dell, passed away at the Preeceville Hospital Nov 14, 1992. Funeral held at Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Anna (nee Horbach) was born May 26, 1897 in Poland where she was educated. She could read and speak three languages, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian very well, and some English. In 1914, when the First World War started, Anna was 16 years old and she and her family was driven off their small farm. They traveled ahead of the battlefields, for two years, many miles into Russia. They lived in a covered wagon pulled by a horse and a cow, many days spent with no food. Anna became employed as a nurse�s aid in a Russian hospital attending to the sick and wounded, where she met her first husband and was married. After only 15 months he died. Anna returned to her family who was back in Poland. In 1927, Anna decided to come to Canada, where she met her second husband John. They got married April 1927 at Dobrowody church. Together they farmed until 1957 when they retired to live in Hazel Dell. In 1982 due to poor health, she moved to the Preeceville Lion�s Hostel. She was an active member of the Catholic Church and she enjoyed singing. Predeceased by her parents, one sister, three brothers in Poland, her first husband in Russia, her second husband John in 1965, one daughter Nettie, three sons, Steve, Mike and William, she is survived by five sons, Peter (Nettie), Joe (Helen), Alex (Mary), Walter (Betty), all of Hazel Dell and Metro (Carol) of Winnipeg; five daughters, Nellie Piluk and Polly Swiderski of Invermay, Olga Burkatski of Kamloops, Mary Kozoway of Winnipeg and Annie Kowaski of Hazel Dell; 35 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. RADAWETZ � Brenda Lee Radawetz, 43 of Preeceville, passed away April 22, 2006 at the Preeceville Hospital. She was born October 27, 1962 to Alex and Mary (Sawka) Radawetz. She attended hazel dell School and completed her grade 12 at Sturgis. At th4eage of 17, she was suffering with MS She spent nine years at home cared for by her parents. She spent time at the Anaka home in Sturgis and 11 years in long-term care at Preeceville Hospital. She is survived by her parents; her grandmother, Annie Sawka; brother Jerry, Brenda and children Jessica, Jeremy, Jillian and Jerelyn; sister Theresa and Sheldon Nelson and children Corey and Carrie; sister Diane and Mike Davis of Canora and children Tanner and Chloe; also many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. RADAWETZ � Mike Radawetz, 64, of Okla, passed away December 29, 1989 in his home. Born November 10, 1925 at Hazel Dell to John and Julia Radawetz, he was educated at Lone Spruce School. He worked as a farm laborer and on construction. On October 22, 1955 he married Grace Anderson and they farmed in the Okla district. He also worked on construction. RADAWETZ � Nettie Radawetz passed away in the Preeceville Hospital on November 24, 2012, at the age of 85 years. Her daughter, Donna, survives Nettie. Nettie was the youngest of five children born to Sam and Mary Worobetz on July 25, 1927. She attended Orange Vale School and completed her grade eight. She then worked on the family farm until she married Peter Radawetz on July 27, 1957 at St. Peter & St. Paul Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. They settled on the farm about five miles west of Hazel Dell and farmed there for ten years. During this time, Donna was born. The family moved to a farm on the outskirts of Hazel Dell in 1966. Peter passed away on December 20, 1996. Nettie and Donna continued to farm until her health began to fail. She was accepted into long term car in April of 2010. RADAWETZ � Peter Radawetz 81 of Hazel Dell, died on December 20,1996 at Preeceville Hospital. Funeral was held at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born on April 24, 1915 in the Hazel Dell district, he worked on the farm and for various logging companies. In 1947, he purchased a farm in the district and in 1960 he purchased more land next to Hazel Dell where he resided. He married Nettie in 1957 at St. Peter and St. Paul Church. Funeral held at Ukrainian Catholic Church at Hazel Dell. Born in West Ukraine, she came to Canada in 1939 with two daughters to join her husband, A son Steve was born in 1940. They farmed in the Hazel Dell district until 1961 when they retired to the town. SHEWCHUK � Alex Shewchuk 80, of Hazel Dell, passed away February 25, 1990 in Okla. Funeral held at Hazel Dell Ukrainian Catholic Church. Born on August 2, 1909 in Whitesand, he was educated at Silver Springs School. He worked for various farms, trapped and also worked as a blacksmith�s helper. He started farming in 1933 and farmed until his retirement in October 1974. He was a member of Wheat Pool and the Co-op. He married Teofila Konjolka on October 31, 1933 at Canora. Predeceased by his parents; a son Leslie; a sister and three brothers, he is survived by his wife; tow sons, Peter (Helen) of Okla and George (Eldean) of Invermay; a daughter, Frances (Jack) Lamont of Lintlaw; a sister, Polly (George) Stacheruk of Invermay; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. SHEWCHUK � Leslie L. Shewchuk, (1947 � 1973) 26 of Moose Jaw and formerly of Invermay was killed Saturday in a single-vehicle accident on a grid road approximately three miles east of Invermay at about 8:00 pm. Mr. Shewchuk had just overtaken and passed a vehicle driven by his father, Alexander Shewchuk of Invermay, when the accident occurred. He is survived by his parents; two brothers, George at home and Pete of Okla, and a sister, Mrs. Frances Horback of Hazel Dell. SLIZIAK � Wasyl Sliziak, aged 76, died on December 19, 1968 at Preeceville Hospital. He was born in 1892 in the Ukraine and came to Canada in 1911 and settled on a homestead in the Hazel Dell area. He farmed until 1964 and then moved into Hazel Dell. He is survived by his wife Lena; daughters, Nellie Bellay of Vancouver and Pauline Beck of Hazel Dell; seven sons, Peter/North Burnaby, Mike/Creighton, SK, Alex/White Rock, BC, John/Vancouver, Paul/North Surrey, Ed of Hazel Dell and Harold of Saskatoon; a sister Mary Firman of Lintlaw; brother Steve of Vernon, BC; 24 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. SMITH � Flora Smith, 89 of Preeceville and formerly of Hazel dell, passed away on November 20, 1987 in Preeceville Hospital. Born on Aug 19, 1898 in Paddock Township, Minn., Flora McCallum was educated at Success School at Melville. In 1919, she married William Smith and they farmed in the Hazel Dell district until 1967. Predeceased by her husband in 1967, her parents, Andrew and Mary, four sisters, Lucy, Mary, Myrtle and Rhoda, and a brother, Henry, she is survived by two sons, William of Hazel Dell and John of Sturgis; two daughters, Violet of Prince George an Dorothy (address unknown); a brother, George McCallum of William�s Lake, a sister, Martha McCallum of Melville; 12 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. SMITH � John "Jack" Smith, 67 of Sturgis, died on January 16, 1993 at Invermay Union Hospital. Born on January 31, 1925 in Hazel Dell to William and Flora (McCallum) Smith, he was educated at Lone Spruce School. He worked at various jobs until becoming an auto body repairman. It was a career that lasted 25 years until his retirement in 1985. He married Jean Ouellette on September 25, 1954. He was an affiliate member of the Sturgis branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by a son, Terry (Leslie) of Madoc, Ont.; three daughters Pat (Gerald) Yagelniski of Rama, Carol (Rick) Walters of Tweed, ON and Wanda Smith of Innerkip, Ontario; a brother, Bill (Muriel) Smith of Hazel Dell; two sisters, Violet (Leslie) MacDonald of Bear Lake, BC and Dorothy Spaxman of Prince George and 10 grandchildren. SMITH � William Henry Smith, better known as Bill, took his final rest at the Preeceville Nursing Home on June 5, 2005, after a long good-bye with dementia. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Merial, and their children, Robert (Margaret) of Hazel Dell, Leslie (Lynn) of Morse, Lloyd (LaVerne) of Yorkton and Heather (Greg) Gawrelitza of North Battleford. He was always proud of his children and was blessed to have nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his sisters, Violet (Les) MacDonald of Bear Lake, BC and Dorothy Spaxman of Prince George. His parents, William and Flora Smith and his brother Jack predeceased him. Bill was born on July 17, 1928 on his grandparent�s homestead in Melville. He was raised in the Hazel Dell RM and attended the Lone Spruce School when he felt like going. After he left school he started farming with his father. In 1952 he went out to work in a bush camp for one winter. The love of the farm soon brought him home to stay and he later purchased the home quarter from his father. Bill enjoyed the breaking of the land and never hid from hard work. On the farm cattle were his livelihood and he loved his horses very much. He enjoyed hunting season and the outdoors. Bill always loved a good time and enjoyed many dances in the area. This is where he met his dancing partner for life, Merial Ann MacDonald of Invermay. They were married on March 20, 1954 at the Preeceville United Church Manse. From this union three sons and a doughtier were born. With Bill�s love of dancing his family saw it only fitting for his last stop to be the Hazel Dell hall. The funeral service was held June 9th. SOCHAN � Wasyl Sochan, 85 of Hazel Dell, passed away June 4, 1974 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held at Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born in the village of Zelena in Ukraine, he came to Canada in 1912. In 1914 he married Julia Bey and they farmed in the Hazel Dell district. His first wife died in 1923, leaving two sons, Peter and Joe and two daughters, Anne and Nettie. In 1924 he married Mary Zayanchkowski. From this union he is survived by three daughters, Florence Naroski and Kate Pasiechuk of Hazel Dell and Sonia Genoway of Saskatoon and two sons, Ted of Flin Flon and Paul of Vernon. There are 34 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Sochan farmed in the Hazel Dell district until 1960 when they retired to the village of Hazel Dell. STUDLIN � Anton Studin, 90 of the Lion�s Hostel in Preeceville and formerly of Hazel Dell, passed away December 9,1976. Funeral was held at St. John�s Lutheran Church in Preeceville and burial in Hazel Dell. Born in Iowa, he came to Canada with his parents, brothers and sister in 1906 and they settled in the Hazel Dell district. He was involved in lumbering and did a great deal of carpentry work in the district. His parents, two brothers and two sisters predeceased him. STUDLIN � Mary (nee Jensen) Studlin, 87 of Kelvington and formerly of Hazel Dell, passed away March 29, 1988 in Kelvington Hospital. Funeral held in Preeceville Funeral Home Chapel. Born on February 9, 1901 in Nanstad, Norway, she came to Canada with her parents, Olaus and Karrie Jensen. She attended Lone Spruce School situated between Hazel Dell and Invermay. On August 1, 1917 she married Olaus Studlin in the United Church at Invermay. For several years they had a sawmill north of Hazel Dell. After the death of her husband she was a cook at a sawmill near Birch River, MB. She later bought a house in Kelvington, where she resided until March 1987, when she entered Kelvindale Lodge. Predeceased by her husband, her parents, two brothers at Invermay and a sister, Minnie Studlin at Hazel Dell, she is survived by two brothers, Einar Jensen of the Lions Hostel in Preeceville and Ole (Iva) Jensen of Preeceville WOROBETZ � Harry Worobetz, 71 of Hazel Dell, passed away on March 31, 1983 in Regina Plains Health Centre. Funeral held at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell. Born to Sam and Mary Worobetz on January 14, 1914, in Hazel Dell, he received his education at Orangevale School. He worked in Ontario, then returned home and farmed the family farm till his retirement to Hazel Dell. Predeceased by his father in 1960, mother in 1964, brothers Mike in 1977 and Pete in 1973, he is survived by two sisters, Tillie Yacyshyn and Nettie Radawetz of Hazel Dell. WOROBETZ � Maggie Worobetz, passed away May 2, 2011 at the age of 87. She was the youngest of 5 children born to Andrew and Katie (nee Galawetski) Maksymiw on April 8, 1924. She spent her early years on the farm and attended Lone Spruce School. As was common in those days, Maggie married Peter Worobetz at the age of 17 in 1941. They farmed south of Hazel Dell and raised 3 sons on the homestead. Eugene born in 1942, Orest born in 1945 and Jim in 1947.Maggie was a traditional wife who did not work outside the home. She spent many hours crocheting, knitting an embroidering. Maggie loved having visitors. She was happiest when she could make coffee and entice you to eat. She was most generous and would willingly share whatever she had. She stayed on the farm after Peter�s sudden death in 1973, until 1979 when she moved into Preeceville. She lived alone in her own home until hr death in 2011. She was predeceased by her husband; all her siblings, Mary Storaschuk, Annie Knash, Mike and Paul Maksymiw and daughter in law Shirley in 2005. WOROBETZ � Mike Worobetz, 64 of Hazel Dell, passed away February 23, 1977 in the Preeceville Hospital. Born in the Preeceville district, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam Worobetz. He attended Orange Vale School. In 1936 he married Mary Yednak at Buchach Church and they farmed in that district until moving to Hazel Dell three years ago. WOROBETZ � Peter Worobetz 57 of Hazel Dell, died Friday morning in Preeceville Hospital from an internal cranial hemorrhage suffered Thursday afternoon. Mr. Worobetz was returning to the farm on his tractor when the hemorrhage occurred. He lost control of the machine before trees and bushes stopped its forward progress. Funeral service was held Monday in Hazel Dell Ukrainian Catholic Church. Born at Hazel Dell, he married Maggie Maksymiw and they farmed in the Hazel Dell district. Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his wife; three sons, Eugene of Hudson Bay and Orest and Jim of Hazel Dell; two sisters, Tillie Yachyshyn and Nettie Radawetz; two brothers, Harry and Mike of Hazel Dell and three grandchildren. YACYSHYN � Peter Yacyshyn, 78 of Preeceville and formerly of Hazel Dell, passed away Sept. 5, 1999 at the Preeceville Hospital. Born on June 20, 1921 in Hazel Dell, he attended Woodrock School and farmed until his retirement. He married Tillie Worobetz on June 10, 1944 at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Preeceville. He served on the executive of St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. Predeceased by his parents, Zachary and Eva Yacyshyn, two brothers, Bill and Steve, and two sisters Mary Yacyshyn and Anne Korchinski, he is survived by his wife, Tillie; a son Joe of Preeceville; two daughters, Betty (Alvin) Moroz of Red Deer and Carol (Myron) Sikora of Calgary; two brothers, Mike (Nellie) of Leamington, ON and Walter (Nellie) of Edmonton; and seven grandchildren. YACYSHYN � Steve Yacyshyn, 58 of Hazel Dell, died on August 31, 1973 in Preeceville Hospital after a long illness. Funeral service held Ukrainian Catholic Church Hazel Dell. Steve was born in 1914 on the family farm in the Hazel Dell area, one of ten children of Leon and Irene Yacyshyn. In 1931 he purchased land and farmed. He lived in the district all his life. He married Nellie Glowatsky in 1934 and they raised three children, Gena and twins Levia and Victor. Predeceased by his mother in 1929, his father in 1935; a brother William and 2 sisters, Mary and Annie. He is survived by his wife and children; 3 brothers, Mike of Leamington, Walter of Edmonton and Peter of Hazel Dell. YACYSHYN � Tillie Yacyshyn 84, of Preeceville and formerly of Hazel Dell, died on October 12, 2005 at the Preeceville Lion�s Housing. Funeral held at ST. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic church in Hazel Dell. Born on November 24, 1920 on the family farm near Hazel Dell, Tillie Worobetz attended Orange Vale School. She married Peter Yacyshyn on June 10, 1944 at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Preeceville. She was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Hazel Dell women�s club and she belonged to club 60 in Preeceville. Predeceased by her husband; three brothers, Mike, Peter and Harry Worobetz, she is survived by a son, Joe of Preeceville; two daughters, Betty (Alvin) Moroz of Red Deer and Carol (Myron) Sikora of Calgary; a sister Nettie Radawetz of Hazel Dell; seven grandchildren and on great-grandchild. ZAYANCHKOWSKI � Bessie (nee Chopty) Zayanchkowski died peacefully on August 16, 2012, at the age of 98 at the Preeceville long Term Care Home. Predeceased by her husband Dan in 1985, her parents George and Karoline Chopty; sisters, Annie, Mary and Nellie; brothers, Tom, Metro, and Bill; son-in-law Metro Radawetz, she leaves to cherish her memory her children Mary (Ben) Wionzek, Caroline Radawetz, and son Dennis; 5 grandchildren, Karen, Donna, Robert, Shelly and Kevin; 11 great grandchildren Kristine, Eric, Heather, Alex, Luke, Kyle, Dayna, Corey, Mara, Aaron and Aiden. Bessie�s passion were cooking, baking, gardening, quilting, traveling and playing cards with family and friends. Above all she lived for her family and enjoyed entertaining all that came to visit. ZAYANCHKOWSKI � Dan Zayanchkowski, 76 of Hazel Dell, died on July 6, 1985 in Regina Hospital. Funeral held at St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. Born March 30, 1909 in Hazel Dell, he was educated at Halycry School. He was a farm labourer until 1934, when he moved to Hazel Dell and built and operated a blacksmith shop for the next 10 years. In 1944, he purchased a general store and operated it until early retirement in 1966. He enjoyed carpentry work and travelling in his retirement. Because of failing eyesight in 1980, he joined the CNIB in Saskatoon and took up weaving baskets and hampers. Due to ill health, he gave that up in 1983. He was a trustee on the school board; a council member, responsible for bringing water to Hazel Dell; active church member and secretary-treasurer for 31 years. He married Bessie Chopty on July 21, 1934 at the Dobrowody Roman Catholic Church. Predeceased by his father Anthony in 1918, mother Anielia in 1968, two brothers, John in 1914 and Walter in 1976, step-father Metro Mocyk in 1959 and step-brother Joe in 1941, he is survived by his wife, Bessie; one son Denis Lee of Kinistino; two daughters, Mary Wionzek of Toronto and Caroline Radawetz of Winnipeg; one brother, Frank Zayanchkowski of Winnipeg; step-brother Peter Mocyk of Hazel Dell; three sisters, Lena Sliziak and Mary Sochan of Hazel Dell and Helen Siwicki of Kamsack; two step sisters, Annie Siwicki and Bernice Kropodra of Kamsack; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. |
