BARAN � William "Bill" Baran, 59 of Sturgis, was killed in a car pedestrian accident one-half mile west of Sturgis on highway # 9 in November 1986. At about 6:15 p.m., Billy Baran was walking on the traveled portion of the highway when he was struck by a 1981 car driven by a Sturgis man. Funeral service was held on December 2nd in the Buchach Ukrainian Catholic Church, 13 miles west of Preeceville. Born at Ketchen in 1927, he was educated at Woodrock School. He worked for farmers in various places until 1972 when he moved to Sturgis. Predeceased by his parents and a brother, Mike, of Hamilton, Ont., in 1984, he is survived by three sisters, Pauline Holte of Preeceville, Ann Holowachuk of Hazel Dell and Antonia Zoblotsky of Saskatoon. BELOUS � Annie (nee Sawka) Belous, 86 of the Preeceville Lions Hostel and formerly of Hazel Dell, died on November 24, 1986 in the Regina General Hospital. The funeral service was held in St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church at Hazel Dell. Born on December 30, 1899 in the village of Zelena in Western Ukraine, she came to Canada in 1911 with her parents, Bill and Nettie Sawka, and three brothers. She married John Belous at the Dobrowody Ukrainian Catholic Church in 1916. They farmed in the Hazel Dell district. She was a member at the Buchach Church. In December 1984, she took up residence in the Lions Hostel. Predeceased by her parents, her husband in 1962, a daughter, Kate in 1971 and two brothers, Roy and Fred, she is survived by four daughters, Mary Sturly of Virden, Stella Kuzminski of Vancouver, Ann Fincaryk of Preeceville an Pauline Miszturak of Toronto; three sons, Bill Belous of Toronto, Russ Belous of Flin Flon and Nick Belous of Hazel Dell; a brother, Steve Sawka of Preeceville; a sister, Mary Kowalyk of Preeceville; 32 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. FINCARYK � Annie (nee Belous) Fincaryk, 67 of Preeceville, passed away February 8, 1995 in the Preeceville Hospital. Burial was in Buchach Cemetery in Hazel Dell. Born March 31, 1927 in Hazel Dell, she was educated at Turnout School. Later she traveled to Flin Flon to seek employment. There she met Leo Fincaryk and married him in September of 1947. She was a homemaker and mother, raising four children. Then she moved to Red Lake, ON, where she spent 19 years with her second husband, Tom Zawerucha. After his death she moved to Preeceville. Predeceased by her father, John in 1962 and her mother Annie in 1986, her first husband, Leo in 1990, her second husband Tom in 1979 and two sisters, Kay in 1972 and Pauline in 1992, she is survived by three sons, Jim (Debbie) of White Court, AB, Jerry of Powell River, BC and Eugene of Brooks, AB; a daughter, Joan (Gerald) Gossen of Hepburn; three brothers, Wm. Belous of Yorkton Russ (Ruth) Belous of Wadena and Nick (Olga) Belous of Hazel Dell; two sisters, Mary (Mike) Sturby of Virden, MN and Stella Kuszminski of Vancouver; and five grandchildren. HOLOWACHAK � Annie (nee Gulka) Holowachak, 94 of Preeceville, died on September 4, 1978 in the Canora Hospital. Funeral in the Buchach Catholic Church and burial in parish cemetery. Born on January 9, 1884 in Hryhoriw, Western Ukraine she came to Canada with her parents, Harry and Tekla Gulka in 1905 and they homesteaded in the Buchach district. In 1907 she married Wasyl Holowachuk and they farmed in the area until 1958 when they retired and moved to Hazel Dell. For four years she has been a resident at the Lions Hostel. Predeceased by her parents, a son, Mike, in the late twenties and her husband in 1961; she is survived by six sons, Sam, Steve, John and Harry of Toronto, Walter and mike of Preeceville; six daughters, Mabel Gulka and Nellie Romanyshyn of Preeceville, Mary Zeniuk of Detroit, Amy Wladychka, Annie Contois of Thunder Bay and Pauline of Toronto; 38 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. HOLOWACHUK � Elaine (nee Pasiechnik) Holowachuk, passed away peacefully, with her children at her side at the Preeceville Health Center, at the age of 75. Elaine was born on March 19, 1938 to Wasyl and Dora Pasiechnik at the Preeceville Hospital. She attended Chekow School until grade 8. Later she met and married Mike Holowachuk on January 22, 1955. They lived and farmed Mike's original homestead of his parents until July 1988. Elaine had a part in the family farm, driving tractor, hauling bales, caring for many farm animals and endless hours of baking and gardening. Her door was always open to family and any guest that happened to pop in, endless hours of card playing or even just sitting around a fire enjoying laughter and company. After her children left home, she later chose a career as a residential support worker from December 1988 to January 2003, with the Mackenzie Society. The care she gave was endless. Elaine's passion were her children and grandchildren as well as her gardening and flowers. She spent long visits with her sisters, Stella, Rosie and Caroline, whether on the phone or sitting together. She had a great passion for the Buchach Church, preparing for the yearly proznick, cleaning the church, cutting grass or even just visiting everone in the cemetery. Elaine was predeceased by her husband Mike, parents, Wasyl and Dora, siblings, Paul, Annie and Steve. She is survived by her nine children, Larry (Mary), John (Mary), Carol (Ron Kwasnacia), Jim (Cindy), Donald (Darlene), Sonya (Barry Knapik), Sharon (Andrew Kiszczak), Darlene (Delmer Burback) and Donna (Perry Erhardt); 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, Hailey, Liam and Hayden; her sisters, Stella, Caroline, Rosie and Pauline. HOLOWACHUK � Mike Holowachuk was born on August 3, 1926 in the Ketchen district. He passed away suddenly in Preeceville Hospital on August 9, 2009 at the age of 83. Mike was the son of Wasyl and Anne (Gulka) Holowachuk. He was raised in the Ketchen Buchach district. He married Elaine Paschenik on January 22, 1955 and together they farmed the homestead and raised their nine children. In 1998 Mike and Elaine moved into Preeceville. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother Mike who was killed at an early age and Walter, Steve, Sam and a sister Amy and twin sister Ann. Mike is survived by his wife Elaine of 54 years, his children: Larry (Mary) of Lloydminister, John (Mary) of Saskatoon, Carol (Ron) Kwasnacia of Yorkton, James (Cindy) of Lloydminister, Donald (Darleen) of Preeceville, Sonja (Barry) Knapik of Central Butte, SK, Donna (Perry) Erhardt of Esterhazy, Sharon (Kim) Holowachuk of Calgary and Darlene (Delmer) Burback of Yorkton; He is also survived by 18 grandchildren as well as one great grandchild Haley and his step grandchildren, Chris, Nick and Sarah; his sisters Nellie, Mabel, Pauline, Mary; brothers, Harry and John. Mike will be remembered for his love for John Deer equipment, hunting, Blue Jays baseball, his generosity to everyone, mostly he loved and looked forward to family gatherings, he could always strike a conversation with anyone who had anything to do with farming. The funeral was held in the Buchach Ukrainian Catholic Church HOLOWACHUK � Walter Holowachuk, 80 of Hazel Dell, passed away on March 30, 1991 in Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held at Buchach Ukrainian Catholic Church, west of Preeceville. Born on July 29, 1910 in Ketchen, he was educated at Woodrock School. He farmed in the Hazel Dell area. He was a member of the Buchach Catholic Church. On Nov. 16, 1940 he married Annie Baran at Ketchen. Predeceased by his parents, Wasyl and Annie and two brothers, Sam and Steve, he is survived by his wife, Annie; five sons, Archie (Pat) of Prince Albert, Glenn (Chris) of Prince Albert, Orest (Debbie) of Preeceville, Eugene (Laurie) of Quesnel, and Russell (Marlene) of Medicine Hat; three brothers, Mike of Preeceville, and John and Harry of Toronto; five sisters, Mabel (Harry) of Preeceville, Amy (Mike) Wiadychka of Toronto, Annie (Isadore) Contois of Thunder Bay and Mary (Mike) Zinyk of Detroit and 10 grandchildren. KITZAN � Peter Kitzan, 61 of Hazel Dell, was killed in a single vehicle accident on Mile 35 north of Waskesiu on August 26, 1974. Born near Buchanan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Kitzan of the Drobot district, he left home in 1939 and moved to Hazel Dell. In 1942 he married Mary Rehaluk. He worked with different road construction gangs. Predeceased by his parents and a sister, Mrs. John Demchuk of Yorkton, in 1973, he is survived by his wife; four sons, Russell an Bill of Edmonton and Eugene and Orest at home; three daughters, Helen Filipic and Nettie of Edmonton and Lorrie at home; two brothers, Bill of Thunder Bay and George of Springside; a sister, Ann Lowe of Toronto and seven grandchildren. KITZAN � Shirley Rose Kitzan passed away in Edmonton, AB on January 7, 2008, at the age of 56 years. She is survived by her husband, Russell; children, Tammy and Kristen (Trent); her mother Mary; a sister Liz (Rick); brothers, David (Mary), Gary (Joanne), and uncle, Freddie, also numerous family and friends. She is predeceased by her father, George and a son Danny. A celebration for Shirley�s life was held in Preeceville on January11th, with interment at Buchach Cemetery, Hazel Dell. KROPODRA � John Kropodra 76 of Hazel Dell, passed away July 25 in the Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held at Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hazel Dell. Born in the Ukraine, he came to Canada in 1913 with his parents and settled on a farm in the Hazel Dell district. He married Martha Schmanski in 1932 and continued farming. He was employed on the CN section, and retired and moved to Hazel Dell in 1965. Predeceased by his wife in 1957, an infant son in 1947, he is survived by two sons, Mike and Walter of Edmonton; two brothers, Harry of Snow Lake and Mike of Hudson Bay; five sisters, Nettie Daschuk, Pat (Harry) Bey of New Westminister, Mary Madarash of Preeceville, Annie Gebauer of Humboldt and Ella Ambormwoch of Saskatoon. PETRYK � Dmetro Petryk, 87 of Hazel Dell died on June 3, 1978 at the Canora Hospital after a long illness. Funeral service held at Buchach Ukrainian Church. Born in Austria, he married Maria Bodnar in 1912 and in 1929 they came to Canada and settled in the Hazel Dell district, where they farmed. Predeceased by his wife in 1949, a son Ben in 1969, he is survived by two daughters, Rosie (Alex) Oszewski of Okla and Mary (Carl) Stein of Hazel Dell; two sons, Peter of Flin Flon and Mike of Saskatoon; 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. SAWKA � Annie (nee Kockan) Sawka age 93 years, of Preeceville and formerly of Hazel Dell, passed away at Preeceville Hospital on October 13, 2007. Funeral held at Preeceville Funeral Home and interment followed in the Buchach Cemetery, Hazel Dell district. She was born May 14, 1914 to Mike and Frances Kockan at the family farm near Hazel Dell. She took her schooling in that area. Annie married Steve Sawka on November 13 1931 and from that union they raised seven children. They farmed in the Hazel Dell area until retiring to Preeceville. Annie loved making quilts and gardening was a love of hers, she enjoyed company, especially having family visitors. Her parents, her husband Steve, and infant son Wasyl and granddaughter Brenda Radawetz predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Pauline (Jack) Husak, Kindersley, Jackie (Clarence) Bartch of Kyle, SK. Jerry (Sally) Sawka of Calgary, Mary (Alex) Radawetz of Preeceville Rudy (Jeannie) Sawka, Kamloops Ken (Judy) of Vancouver and Friday (Pat) of Red Deer; 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren. SAWKA � Steve Sawka, 79 of Preeceville, passed away on February 15, 1990 in City Hospital, Saskatoon. Funeral held in the Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hazel Dell. Steve was born on February 4, 1911 in Ukraine. He was educated at Turnout School, north of Hazel Dell. He married Annie Kochan on November 13, 1931 at Preeceville. He farmed in the Hazel Dell area until his retirement in 1977 when he moved to Preeceville. Predeceased by his parents; a son, Billy; two brothers, Fred and Roy and a sister, Annie Bellows, he is survived by his wife, Annie; four sons, Bill of Calgary, Rudy of Kamloops. Ernie of Brooks, AB, and Ken of Vancouver; three daughters, Pauline Husak of Kindersley, Jackie Bartch of Kyle and Mary Radawetz of Hazel Dell; a sister, Mary Kowalyk of Preeceville; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. SLOYCHUK � Eva Sloychuk 86, of Preeceville, and formerly of Hazel Dell, passed away on November 3, 2003 at the Preeceville Lions Hostel. Born on August 24, 1917, in the Hazel Dell district, she attended Woodruck School. In her younger years, she worked at various jobs including a store clerk and on the family farm. Predeceased by four brothers, Nick, Steve, John and Mike Sloychuk and three sisters, Mary Johnson, Annie Budnick and Irene, she is survived by a sister, Julia of Atikokan, Ontario SLOYCHUK � Wasylina Sloychuk, 84 of Hazel Dell, passed away on January 21, 1970. Funeral was held at Buchach Church in Hazel Dell. She was born in the Ukraine in 1886. She married Zachary Sloychuk before coming to Canada in 1911. They farmed in the Woodrock district, 4 miles NE of Hazel Dell. Predeceased by her husband in 1947, she is survived by 5 daughters, Mary Jensen, Annie Rodnick, Irene Kuntz of Toronto, Julia Peacosh and Eva Sloychuk of Hazel Dell; four sons, Nick of Saskatoon, Steve of Brandon, Mike of Toronto, and John of Virden, MB; a sister Mrs. Rehaliuk of Hazel Dell; brother Mike Mushansky of Hazel Dell and a brother and a sister in the old country; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. YEDNAK - Annie Yednak died on July 12, 1974 in the Preeceville Hospital. Funeral held in the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazel Dell and burial in Buchach Ukrainian Cemetery east of Hazel Dell. Born in the Ukraine in 1885, Annie Smozola came to Canada in 1912 and settled near Hazel Dell, where she married Mike Yednak in 1916. Predeceased by her husband in 1962 and a daughter Irene in 1948, she is survived by four daughters, Lena Prostko, Mary Worobetz and Daisy Mocyk of Hazel Dell and Stella Petroski of Saskatoon; twelve grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. |
