PIONEER CEMETERY

St. Margaret's Bay

This was formerly the site of the “Pioneer Cemetery Heritage Society of St. Margaret’s Bay”. The Society has ceased operation, due to the advanced age of its members and declining interest. I hope to keep this site operational as long as possible.  Should you have any questions, I will try to be of assistance.

The Pioneer Cemetery is a heritage asset of early European settlement found on St. Margaret's Bay.  The Cemetery is located at #11865 Peggy's Cove Rd. (highway 333), French Village, Halifax County, Nova Scotia. It lies approximately half a kilometre North of St. Paul's Anglican Church (a N.S. Heritage Site) and fronts on the Peggy's Cove Road. It is otherwise bounded by private property; an open field to the North East, a wooded area at the back, and an abandoned community general store to the South West (of interest to Bay residents in itself, as the local shopkeeper, Newt Boutilier, was murdered there in January of 1968).  The murder was never solved and practically every resident that remembers the story has a different opinion as to who did it.

Most of the grave markers are ordinary fieldstones, many are missing, and there are very few headstones. Burials are believed to have filled the site and elderly locals state they exceeded its boundaries beyond the rubble wall at the back.

There are no records prior to 1834.  By consulting family members; examining wills, probate papers, inventories of estates and considering who purchased the property, logical conclusions have enabled me to compile as list of names of those probably interred pre 1834.  After 1834, St. Paul's Parish Records were used.

St. James' Church, Boutilier's Point (first known as the North Shore Chapel) was not erected until July of 1846 on land purchased from John Martin and Mary Catherine Boutilier the 4th of June 1845.  On 15th November 1846, the first service was performed by Rev. John Stannage, (exterior only having been completed).  The Church was consecrated in January of 1848.  The Pioneer Cemetery was used until this time for burials of people living on the North Shore of the Bay, including Hubbards.

The burial ground located at St. Peter's Anglican at Hackett's Cove was purchased in 1810. Names of people from that area were not included in the Pioneer Cemetery internments.

HISTORY OF THE PIONEER CEMETERY

During the early 1780s, a number of "Foreign Protestant" families began leaving Lunenburg to seek their fortunes elsewhere.  Governor John Parr encouraged many settlers to come to St. Margaret's Bay. People took up land first on  the Eastern side of the Bay and a few years later some moved to the North and Western Shores. They worked hard to establish homesteads, in total wilderness, where natives still camped along the shores.  It is said they rowed and/or sailed to Halifax, Lunenburg, and Chester to acquire supplies, be married and baptize their children.  The burial of their dead was another matter.  In the beginning, family members would be buried on the homestead.  Being religious people, this did not seem fitting.

In 1794, a group of settlers got together and purchased an acre of land from one of their number, James Boutilier, Yeoman and his wife Susanna Elizabeth Merriott.  Those that purchased the land were:  David Jr.,  Jacque (James), James, James Frederick, John, John James, Frederick and George Boutillie, Christopher, John Christopher, George, and Joseph Dophinee, James and George Jollemois, Robert Keddy, Henry Lewis (son-in-law of Jacques Boutillie), George Mason, Peter Merriott, and Jacob VanWhit.  The land was located in what was known as the "French Village" because most of the early settlers that had come into the Bay were French.

This cemetery was nondenominational and the first cemetery in St. Margaret's Bay.  Even settlers that had not purchased shares in the land were buried here.

ASSESSMENT OF THE PIONEER CEMETERY PRIOR TO CLEAN UP:

In March of 2002 I visited the cemetery a number of times and surveyed the condition of the site.  The cemetery, although abutting the  Peggy’s Cove Road (Hwy. # 333), was not visible from the highway.  George Newbury hacked down enough bush to take the following picture:

Before cleanup in 2002.jpg

The cemetery had been abandoned for many, many years and was totally overgrown with mature trees and thick undergrowth.  Vandals had toppled, broken and scattered stones. The site was littered with standing dead trees, deadfalls, and beer bottles.

Along the property line between what was originally Newt Boutilier’s general store and the cemetery, an old barbed wire fence and rotting posts were found.  The back of the cemetery is bounded by a rubble wall, as well as old barbed wire fencing.  Along the Northeast property line, abutted by a vacant field, I also found the remains of barbed wire.  At the left side of the front of the cemetery property, rusted remains of barbed wire and rotting posts were found.

In September of 2002, Owen Smith measured the property.  Owen reported the approximate measurements were as follows:  front and back of the property were about 185’ wide, the Northeast boundary 325’ long and the Southwest boundary 388’ long.

Following the initial assessment, I formed a society, “The Pioneer Cemetery Heritage Society of St. Margaret’s Bay”, whose aim was to clean up the property to the best of our ability.

A good number of people, mostly seniors, worked very hard to bring the property back to an acceptable appearance.

We applaud and thank the following local businesses and community organizations that have supported us in our efforts:  The Masthead News, Ranger Tree Services, Pierceys, Bay Equipment Rentals, Atlantic Superstore, Tim Hortons,  the Sea Scouts under the command of Mike Covey, and Shelly Webb of the St. Margaret's Regional Tourism Development Association.

I attended a workshop at the Nova Scotia Museum in Halifax to learn what to do and what not to do while restoring an old cemetery.  Most important lesson:  do not clean the stones with anything but clean water and a very soft brush, nothing harsher than you would use on your face.

Do not remove loose stones from the cemetery, they are probably grave markers.  I believe the Boy Scouts, many years ago, did a clean up of the property.  I have a suspicion they may have moved many fieldstones because there is a pile of them at the back of the cemetery.

Unfortunately, the vandalism at this cemetery was extreme.  We believe it happened quite some years ago, as many of the stones were covered with debris and some even partially buried.  We did not have funds to repair stones, as it is very expensive.  We were able to reset stones that had been toppled but not broken.

A few pictures of damage by vandals are shown:

PLOT PLAN OF THE CEMETERY

THE OLD ROAD CONTROVERSY:

During the clearing of the site, controversy arose about the old roadbed in front of the cemetery.  Some locals suggest it was a road Newt Boutilier built to access his field next to the cemetery on the left.  This is not correct, the original road ran directly right in front of   the cemetery as it did with the store.

C:\Documents and Settings\Sandra W\My Documents\PICTURES\cemetery pictures\MP Navigator EX\Newt Boutilier Store 001.jpg

The above picture is of Newt Boutilier’s store prior to 1949.  The white picket fence to the left of the store is the cemetery fence.  You can see Newt had a fence attached to the side of the store as well as to the cemetery fence.  You can see land on the right side of the road.  There is no land there today, the highway runs next to the water.

The Department of Highways was contacted and a highway engineer inspected the site and advised the old roadbed was the original road before the highway was widened, straightened, and hills reduced during 1949-1950 when the road was paved.  The following survey copies support his findings:  The old road is outlined in blue, the centre line of the new road in red.  The hill in front of the field next to the cemetery’s left was reduced and the centre of the road was moved 75-80 feet from the cemetery property.

B. Maruca (BM), researcher extraordinaire, untangled the genealogical lines of most of the St. Margaret Bay inhabitants.  E. Taylor (ET), also was instrumental in helping me with much family genealogy. Gary Meade (GM) was helpful as well.  Unfortunately, during my early days of research, I committed a grave error by not always recording my sources.  I hope those that helped me will forgive my ignorance and know how much I do appreciate their contributions. I can’t remember where much of my information came from but it was from the above people.   Most of the burial records were from the Nova Scotia Archives (NSA/NSARM) Microfilm  (MF) #s 11371-11372 which I did research.  Thanks to Carol Wilson for helping me proof read the films.
