Name: Iona Meyer
E-Mail: [email protected]
Counties: Cape Breton
Surnames: BLAKEBURN / GALPIN
Query: I'm looking for information re this Blakeburn & Galpin family who left Newfoundland in the late 1890's for NS and settled in North Sydney.
Elizabeth Anne Galpin / Born: Nov 9 1872 Codroy NF / Died Mar 13 1955 Vancouver BC married:
Arthur William Blakeburn / Born: May 12 1876 Port aux Basque NF / Died: May 19 1952 Mission BC
In the 1901 Census index of NS they were living in North Sydney. They had 4 children while in N.Sydney: Florence - died as a young, child, Ralph - married Stella Mackie, Olive - my maternal grandmother married Homer Franklin Minckler, Hilda - married Donald Bayly
They then moved to BC where they had 4 more: George - married Gladys Parker, Dora - married James Reid, Clara - married John McMillan, Cecil - married Winnifred Manfield
If someone could help with these people I would appreciate it. There were a number of Galpins living in NS at the same time and I am trying to sort them all out. There seems to be a mass immigration to NS from NF and then again to BC.

Name: Frances Doutt Smith
E-Mail: [email protected]
Counties: Unknown
Surnames: WESCOTT / TATE
Query: I am interested in John Wescott (b: 1797) who married Hannah Tate (b:1802, Nova Scotia). They were presumably married in Nova Scotia, and their first six children were born there.
(1) Armanella (b:1827), (2) William Edwin (b: 1830), (3) Adelaide (b: 1833), (4) Joseph (b: 1835), (5) Mary Sophia (b: 1833), (6) Emeline (died in infancy). Their 7th child was Charles Alfred, who was born about 1839 in Michigan. So.... I assume John and Hannah were married about 1825 in Nova Scotia, and moved to Michigan before 1839. Dates are approximate.
The above info comes from hearsay and 1850 census and later. Would like to have information of John Wescott (Westcott?) and Hannah Tate: i.e. parents, birthdates, places, etc.

Counties: Unknown
Surnames: MAHONEY / COURTNEY
Query: Hi, I'm Karen and I'm looking for information on the Courtney family. My great aunt turns 100 on March 21,1997. She said, as a little girl, her mother told her about her family in Nova Scotia. They were to have had a very large cranberry farm. Her grandmother came to the U.S. and married a Mahoney. She had been married before to a Mr.Courtney and she had three small children with her, Mr.Courtney being the father. We think their names were Fanny, Micheal, and Kate. Aunt Frona was told that Fanny was four at the time her grandmother came to the U.S.A. We know the date had to have been before 1864, because Frona's mother was born in 1864 and she was the 2nd of three.
Aunt Frona would have known more about her grandmother but her mother was disowned by her parents. Frona's mother, Margaret Mahoney Shouse, married with out her parents permission. They belived she married a common farmhand, and maybe a Jew. Her life was runied. They tried to bring her home after her first son was born, with the promise of a milk cow, a house, laying hens, and $300 she did not go. I do have the names of John Courtney, Mary Jane, and Melcinia Courtney. Any help would be wonderful, I have been tryng to put this together for Aunt Frona before she is no longer with us.

Query: My ancestor, William Gerrard, born on 21 December 1731 in Hampshire, England was married to Ann (Nancy?) Huxford on April 3, 1754 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England. She was reported to be from Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. William died when he was struck by lightning on Gerard Island on 4 September 1789. I would like to know of the ancestry of William and Ann and what became of Ann after William's unfortunate demise. They had two sons, John and Henry who were born in Hampshire (Ince?) England. Henry was married by bond to Lydia Boulden and John was married in Nova Scotia to Mary Eva Glawson by bond on 20 November 1802, the same year he and Henry received a license to occupy Gerard Island. John and Mary were very prolific having fourteen children. He was my great-great-great grandfather. Any clue as to the origins of William and Ann would be greatly appreciated as would information as to why they merited the license to occupy Gerard Island. Some suspect it may have been that William was a Loyalist who received the license as a reward for his service to the Crown.

Query: Looking for information about William Southworth and family who settled in Horton about 1760, as one of the colony of men "all from Connecticut." He was in Cumberland by 1763 and was listed on the 1770 Cumberland census with 1 man, 2 boys, 2 women and 1 girl. William was born in Little Compton, RI in 1735, son of Edward Southworth and Elizabeth Palmer. It is believed that he came to Nova Scotia from Lebanon, CT where on of his brothers, Beriah Southworth, lived. I know the name of only one son, Beriah, who was born in NS about 1773. The family left sometime between the years of 1773 and 1790 at which time they are found in the 1790 and 1800 censuses of Columbia County, NY. I would appreciate hearing from anyone interested in this family. Thanks.

Query: Hello, I am trying to research my family line in Nova Scotia. My Great Great Grandfather was Charles Castex de Doming. He was born March 15, 1862 somewhere in the St. Marys Bay area of Nova Scotia.
His death certificate from Needham, MA USA, lists his father as Edward and his mother as unknown. It also states that his father was born at St. Marys Bay, Nova Scotia. Charles worked as a merchant seaman and married a Mary Ellen Pittman of Burin, Newfoundland somewhere around the year 1890. They then moved to Needham, MA and settled down and had a family. I am unsure if the surname is "de Doming" or the full "Castex de Doming". Charles gave all 8 of his sons the middle name "Castex". I have been unable to find any trace of this family in Nova Scotia in any of the census records and was wondering if anybody could be of any help to me. I am a member of the New England Historical Genealogical Society in Boston, MA and would be willing to do research in the Boston area in exchange for someone willing to do research for me in the Nova Scotia area on this family.
Thank you, Joe Barber, 36 Sexton St., Sudbury, MA 10776
