Obituaries - September 2000 Saturday, September 2, 2000 The Halifax Herald Limited BARKHOUSE, Elsie May BARKHOUSE, Elsie May - 82, Spruce Grove, Alta., formerly of Nova Scotia, passed away August 31, 2000 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Scotch Village, Hants Co., N.S., she was a daughter of the late Charles Burton and Bertha Louise (Baughan) Cox. She had been a member of the Scotch Village United Baptist Church, and lived her life in N.S. until 1968, when she and her family moved to Vancouver. Two years were spent there before before moving to Faro, Yukon Territory for ten years. After retirement, she returned from the Yukon to Nova Scotia, and was a resident of Durham from 1981-1987. She then went west again, and since 1987 has called Edmonton home. Elsie was a very strong and courageous person, and will be sadly missed by her family: sons, Kenneth Otis (Sharon) Cox, and Gerald Frank (Barbara) Cox, both of Spruce Grove, Alberta; daughters, Bertha Faye (Stuart) MacDonald, Pictou, and Bonita Elsie (Leonard) Chayco, Fort McMurray, Alta.; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, sisters, Florence Sanford, Summerville, N.S., Helen Cox, Windsor, N.S. She was predeceased by her husband, William Otis Barkhouse; grandsons, Trevor Chayco and William MacDonald; brother, Raymond Cox. She was formerly employed at the Waterville Hospital (Kings Rehabilitation Center) as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Evangeline Chapter 15 and was a member of the Cambridge United Baptist Church where she had been active in the Women's Missionary Society. She was a volunteer worker for the Canadian Red Cross Society. He was stationed at Aldershot during the Second World War after which he worked on various farms throughout the Annapolis Valley. He retired after working 35 years as a painter at the CE Section, CFB Greenwood. Saturday, September 9, 2000 The Halifax Herald Limited MORASH, Donald Louis MORASH, Donald Louis - 77, Halifax, passed away peacefully September 8, 2000, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. Born in Kentville, he attended Kings County Academy and then joined the staff of the Bank of Nova Scotia in his home town. During the Second World War, he enlisted as aircrew with the Royal Canadian Air Force. While stationed in England, he and his flight crew flew 30 combat missions over Germany. He was commissioned and returned home. Rejoining the Bank of Nova Scotia, he remained for several years and then became employed with Prudential Insurance Company until retirement. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He is survived by his former wife, Grace; daughters, Linda Hurshman and husband Glenn and son, Scott, Tantallon; Pamela Crowdis and husband Duncan and daughters, Jennifer and Heather, Ajax, Ont.; Susan Morash, Halifax. He just received his Habitant Certificate so he could set his rabbit snares for the winter. Although he was quiet, he had a wonderful sense of humour and always quick with a joke. At his young age he understood that his time was limited and made known his wishes concerning the details for his final services. He had a favourite spot in the woods in back of his home in East Dalhousie, where at his request his ashes would be scattered when the time came. Born in Mahone Bay, he was a son of the late Albert and Charlotte (Kedy) Burgoyne. Early in Second World War he joined the R.C.A.F as a navigator. In 1942 on a bombing mission over Germany, his plane was shot down near Paris. He was taken prisoner by the Germans and spent about three years in prisoner of war camps. In 1995 the people of Marley le Roi, France, erected a monument bearing his name and the names of the five other crew members, to honor their efforts towards freedom. After the war, he returned to Canada and civilian life. He worked with Acadia Construction Co. before becoming Town Clerk of Mahone Bay in 1951, serving in that position for 26 years. He was a charter member and past president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 49 and past president of Charity Lodge 69, A.F.&A.M.. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jean (Barry); son, Gregory (Susan), Bridgewater; daughter, Julie (Bill) Campbell, Regina; grandchildren, Jennifer and Melissa Burgoyne; Megan and Alex Campbell; sister, Dorothy "Dollie" Hynick; nieces, Suzanne Riawetz and Roberta Hynick; nephews, Bill Burgoyne, Derrell Hynick, Donovan Hynick. Wednesday, September 27, 2000 The Halifax Herald Limited COVEY, Hale Sydney COVEY, Hale Sydney - 63, Blandford, Lunenburg Co., died September 26, 2000, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in Blandford, a son of the late Sydney Kenneth and Gertie May (Boutilier) Covey. He served in the RCAF for five years before starting his own business in 1960, Covey's Auto Recyclers Ltd. He was a member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Blandford, and served as a member of the church council along with the church choir. He was a life member of District 1 Fire Department, Blandford, receiving his Exemplary Service Medal and Fire Service Medal of Nova Scotia. He was past Fire Commissioner, past member of the Board of Directors of Shoreham Village, Chester. He was past president of the Automotive Recylers Association of Atlantic Canada and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Butler Branch 44, Chester. He was past master and marshal of Clark Lodge 61 AF & AM, Chester and received his Meritorious Service Jewel in July. He was a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite 32nd degree. He was a past member of the Board of Directors for the District 1 Community Centre, Blandford. Surviving are his wife, the former Donna Marie Heisler; daughters, Debra Marie Covey-Getson (Paul), Coldbrook, Kings Co.; Denise Lee MacAdam (Andrew), Blandford, and son, Derek Hale (Pamela), Chester; brothers, Blair (Karen), Dartmouth; Peter (Edith), Blandford and his mother-in-law, Frances Heisler, Blandford; grandchildren, Mitchell and Kurt Getson; Spencer and Hudson MacAdam; two nieces. Visitation Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with a legion service at 7:30 p.m. in Davis Funeral Home, Chester. Funeral service in St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Blandford on Friday at 2 p.m., Rev. Richard Walsh assisted by Rev. Dan Green officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. A reception will follow in the District 1 Community Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations made to St. Barnabas Anglican Church Building Fund, Canadian Cancer society, Palliative Care Unit, VG Site, would be greatly appreciated. Born in Wales, she was a daughter of the late Margaret Griffiths. She was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the British Army. She was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Halifax. She is survived by daughters, Edna Miller and her husband John, Dartmouth; Lynda Davis and her husband Basil Jr., Lower Five Islands; grandchildren, Debbie Rogers, John Miller, Carol Anne Miller, all of Dartmouth; Shauna Allen and her husband Gordon, Greenfield; Terry Davis and his wife Marylou, Bible Hill; great-grandchildren, Christopher and Dana Rogers, Tyler and Jessica Allen, Julia and Brady Davis. She was predeceased by an infant son, Terrance Maxwell. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday in Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro, Rev. Dr. Kate Crawford officiating. Saturday, September 30, 2000 The Halifax Herald Limited KNICKLE (Doyle), Lawrence Robert KNICKLE (Doyle), Lawrence Robert - 77, Lunenburg, died Thursday, September 28, 2000, in the Fisherman's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Born in Lunenburg, he was a son of the late Doyle and Evelyn (Finck) Knickle. He served in the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Core. Later in life he worked for Lunenburg Sea Products later known as National Sea Products Ltd. He served for many years in the Labour Movement and was president of the Canadian Seafood Worker's Union, Local 101. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23, Lunenburg, where he was a member for over 50 years. He was an adherent of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg. He is survived by his wife, the former Jane Morash; sister, Edith (Myra) Redden, Greely, Ont.; nephews, Winifred, Nepean, Ont.; Nathan "Skip", Greely, Ont.; nieces, Evelyn, Toronto; Joyce Sullivan, Oromocto, N.B.; three grand- nieces and five grandnephews. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 No. 3 Hwy., Lunenburg with visitation 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23 will hold a Legion tribute 6:45 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Funeral service 2 p.m. Monday in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Laurence Mawhinney officiating, assisted by Rev. Paul Jensen. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.
