Saturday, October 2, 1999 The Halifax Herald Limited SILVER, Reginald Leander "Reg" SILVER, Reginald Leander "Reg" - 60, Church St. Ext., Antigonish, died October 1, 1999, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish, after a long and courageous battle with illness. Born in Lunenburg, he was a son of the late Ellard R. and Lucille Harriett (Tanner) Silver. He was a lifelong resident of Antigonish. In 1958 he joined his father working at the family business, Silver and Roberts, later known as Silver and Hanifen. After his father's retirement in 1991, he and his brother, Eugene joined partnership to manage Silver and Hanifen Plumbing and Heating until 1998. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time at his camp in Round Lake, Guysborough Co. Reg was instrumental in the formation in the Beech Hill Fire Dept. in 1985, and was a member until his death. He was an active member of the Fire Department and organized many fundraising activities and other events. In association with the coalition for persons with disabilities, Reg was responsible for lobbying local community leaders and groups to established parking spaces for the handicapped in key spaces along Main Street, Antigonish. Born February 20, 1933, he was a son of the late Joseph and Annie (Wile) Hebb. At the age of nine, he had polio and was left with very limited mobility, but he overcame huge obstacles in his life to become a contributing member of society. After several stays in hospital he completed high school by correspondence. He attended Dalhousie and graduated with a B. Comm. in 1960, despite physical barriers. In 1961-1969, manager of New Leaf Enterprises, the memory of which stayed close to his heart throughout the remaining years of his life. 1969-1977 Dalhousie Printing Centre as manager. 1977-1994, director of Orthotics and Prosthetics, Nova Scotia Rehabilitation Centre. Since retiring in 1994, he's written his life story: "Wheels to Victory: The Mel Hebb Story". For the past few years he has participated in various volunteer positions, The Hourglass Action Awards, Access-a-Bus Advisory Committee Chair, and the Canadian Paraplegic Association. He was a member of the Wise Men's Club. He was also a member of Bethany United Church and attended Mens' Club. He is survived by his wife, Wanda; daughters, Catherine and Jacqueline; grandson, Zack. Also sister, Audrey, Isaacs Harbour; Olive, West Northfield; brothers, Arnold, Newcombville; Douglas, Auburndale. He was predeceased by sister, Edith; brothers, Percy, Erving and Russell. She leaves behind a family who she loved dearly and also loved her and always will, more then words can say. A member of Blandford Seasiders and happy gang. She wrote notes of interest for the Progress Enterprise. She enjoyed travelling in later years, card games, making quilts. Basil served during the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Electric and Mechanical Engineers with the fighting forces in France, Belgium and Holland (1942-1946) for which service he received the France and Germany Gold Stars and the Voluntary Service Medal. He was a past vice president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Somme Branch 31. When he returned from the war, he worked at the Imperial Oil Dartmouth Refinery and retired as a welder, first class. He later worked at Warnock Hershey as an inspector and then at CFB Sherwater as an ambulance attendant. Surviving are his wife, the former Emily Mary Chaisson; daughter, Lynda (Mrs. Yvon Dufour); son, Dr. Richard E. She was an associate member of the First Baptist Church in Halifax and an enthusiastic participant in the Ladies Auxiliary. She was predeceased by brothers, Bert (killed in the First World War), and St. Clair "Jack", (Moncton, N.B.); sisters, Hilda (Mrs. Gordon Daley) and Mrs. Dorothy Clare; and by a nephew, Lawrence F. Daley. He served overseas three years during the Second World War; was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Butler Branch 44, Chester, St Stephen's Anglican Church, Chester and was very instrumental and active in starting St. Margaret's of Scotland Church, Halifax. He was involved in Cubs and Boy Scouts for many years. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
