Thursday, October 9, 1997 WHYNOT, Elden A WHYNOT, Elden A. - 88, Shelburne, died Tuesday, October 7, 1997, after a short illness, in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point. Born in Milton, Queens Co., he was a son of the late Abram and Catherine (Cunningham) Whynot. Moving to Shelburne at an early age, he was educated in local schools and later moved to New York were he found employment with Chase Manhattan Bank. An amateur photographer since the days of his youth, during the mid 1930s, he attended the prestigious Pace Institute in New York City. He returned to Nova Scotia in 1943 where he opened his own photography studio in Shelburne. He also served as a civilian photographer for HMCS Shelburne during the war years. Although his commission, commercial, legal and journalistic work was well known, his wedding and portrait photographs, as well as images of marine scenes, were highly prized by generations of Shelburne County residents. On June 29, 1997, the Shelburne County Museum opened a special exhibit of photographs, highlighting his 60-year professional career. He was predeceased by his first wife, Edith E. (Monroe), and his second wife, Rhoda (Noni) Lenora (Ryer); a brother in childhood; stepchildren, John Roger Ryer (Buddy), Ann Ruggles. Born in Western Shore, he was a son of the late Humphrey and Bessie (Vaughan) Mosher. He was a retired mechanic. He had owned and operated the Irving garage and Diamond "D" Cars and Trucks dealership in Western Shore. He cut and sold Christmas trees on Oak Island and shipped them to United States markets. He moved to Newtown, Conn., in 1949, where he owned and operated Newtown Well Drilling and was employed as an engineer mechanic with the City of Bridgeport, Conn. He was awarded his private pilots license and flew his own plane. He served overseas during the Second World War and was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, F.E. Butler Branch 44, Chester. He returned to Nova Scotia in 1985 and was the first resident admitted to the DVA wing at Fishermen's Memorial Hospital. He received the honour of cutting the ribbon along with the lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia at the dedication of the flower garden for the veterans wing.
