She was a long-standing member of Central United Church, Lunenburg, and a member of the Mary Gormley Unit of the UCW. Eglah was a life member of Alexander Rebekah Lodge 22 and Grace Chapter Order of the Easter Star 8, Lunenburg. Surviving are daughters, Jean (Elvin) Crouse, Lunenburg; and Sylvia (Arthur) Crouse, Halifax; son, Vernon, Lunenburg; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. Born in Middlewood, Lunenburg Co., she was a daughter of the late Esson and Flora (Teal) Slauenwhite. Irene was a former employee of Mersey Seafoods Ltd. and Lane's Privateer Motor Inn. She also worked as a housekeeper in various homes in the Liverpool area. She was an avid bingo player and collector of knick-knacks, dishes and glassware. She loved animals, especially cats, gardening and weekly walks to downtown Liverpool. Wednesday, May 3, 2000 The Halifax Herald Limited DOUGLAS (Zwicker), Marion Elvira DOUGLAS (Zwicker), Marion Elvira - Milton, Queens Co., passed away peacefully, May 1, 2000, at the age of 92, in the Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay, near the village of Oakland, where she spent her youth as the only child of Harris and Freelove Zwicker. As a young Normal School graduate, Marion commenced her teaching career at the nearby Clearland School and subsequently taught several generations of children at Milton Central School, Milton, Queens Co., where she also served as vice-principal during the sixties. Marion's devotion to the church and community was reflected in the many offices she held over the years. For more than 30 years, she served as clerk of the Milton United Baptist Church where she was also an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary. As a young mother and wife of an overseas soldier during the Second World War, Marion promoted Victory Bonds and worked with the Women's Institute to improve health and education. She continued to focus on these concerns through Home and School Association, Red Cross and the Milton Community Association. Until recently, Marion was an active member of the IODE, Gorham Chapter. Her many friends will also remember her as an avid Bridge and Scrabble player. She was predeceased by her husband, W. Burke Douglas. Marion will be sadly missed by her children, Nancy Lorimer (Gordon), Montreal West; Robert Douglas, Mahone Bay and Heather Douglas, Toronto; her granddaughters, Roberta and Rosemary, and their mother, Bertha Douglas; and granddaughters, Sally, Megan and Kendra, mothers of great-grandchildren, Ian, Elliott, Hannah, Timothy and Charlotte. Saturday, May 6, 2000 The Halifax Herald Limited DAUPHINEE, R.O. "Bob" DAUPHINEE, R.O. "Bob" - Halifax, passed away May 5, 2000, in the V.G. Site, QEII. He was a son of Guy and Mercedes Dauphinee. He was educated in Halifax public schools, Rothesay Collegiate, New Brunswick, graduated from Saint Mary's University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and attended Dalhousie Law School. Following university he served as an Accountant Officer in the RCAF and served in management positions in the brewing industry in Atlantic Canada. For 8 years he was assistant to the Hon. A.G. Brown in the Hon. Gerald Regan government. Since 1979 he has owned and operated Eagle Security and was an active partner in Active Working Group, a diversified company in printing, real estate development, microfilming, engineering supplies and computers. Bob was a former member and Rear Commodore, Armdale Yacht Club, a member of Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, Mayflower Curling Club, Ashburn Golf and Country Club, Nova Scotia Liberal Association and the Laurier Club, Ottawa. He represented Canada and Cuba in the Western Hemisphere Snipe Championship, participated in the Marblehead and Bermuda ocean races and in the Olympic trials. He coached the Newfoundland Summer Games Sailing Term in 1969 and participated in many major regattas and class championships. He was active in hockey, Halifax minor hockey, Berwick Apple Kings, Maritime A champions, captain of St. Mary's University Intercollegiate Team and won the scoring title two out of three years and was active in Old Timers Tournaments. An active football player he played with QEH and was captain of the St. Mary's team and was an assistant coach in his final year. An avid curler he won the Johnson Senior Provincial Championship and the Ship Hector Cash Spiel, and while in university played on the St. Mary's Team. He was captain of the intercollegiate Tuna Team. Norma received her schooling in Hardwood Lands and worked at Halifax Dockyards and Simpsons during wartime years. She married Parker Hebb and moved to Nine Mile River, in 1952. She was a staunch Presbyterian and a devout member of Hardwood Lands Presbyterian Church and had been church treasurer for over 28 years. She was a life member of Atlantic Missionary Society and past trustee of the Nine Mile River Community Hall. Norma was also a past member of the Women's Institute and active in community affairs. She was a local historian with a great memory and could be relied on to enrich all with stories of the past. She loved to travel, read, knit and was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. She had a great love of family and cherished her five grandchildren. Wednesday, May 24, 2000 The Halifax Herald Limited HUBLEY, Donald Cameron HUBLEY, Donald Cameron - Halifax, passed away at the age of 84 years on Sunday, May 21, 2000, in the VG Site, QEII. Mr. Hubley was born in 1916, in Halifax County, Fourteen Mile House at what is now known as Hubley's, Halifax County. He was a son of the late Wellesley Harrington Hubley and Rebekah Gotabed (Grant) Hubley. He moved to Halifax City and at the age of 25 years joined the Halifax Police Department where he served the people of Halifax for almost 35 years. Mr. Hubley was well known and highly respected. His character was exemplary and he was a model citizen. Mr. Hubley married Pauline "Polly" Alice (Lingard) on August 9, 1947, in All Saints Cathedral, St. Stephen's Chapel. They lived on Chebucto Road and moved to 3703 Lynch St., in the north end of Halifax where they raised six children. Mr. Hubley retired from service with the Halifax City Police in 1975, due to health reasons. He continued to live out his life at 3703 Lynch St., before entering Melville Lodge in January of 1996. He is survived by daughters, Donna Pauline Hubley, Regina, Sask.; Heather Faye Harvey, Hebb's Cross, Bridgewater; Carol Ann Craig, Windsor Junction; Amy Arlene Morris, Fall River; Betty Jean Flynn, Lower Sackville. He is also survived by son, Arthur Joseph Hubley, Halifax/Dartmouth; brother, Clark Foch Hubley, Hubley's, Halifax County; and wonderful grandchildren, Dawn-Marie, Sandy (Alexander), Donald, Julie, Ashley, Brittany, Rachael, Ben, Sarah, Aren, Cody, Johnathan and Cameron. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Pauline "Polly" Alice (Lingard) Hubley, in January of 1987, whom he deeply loved and missed. Born in Bridgewater, he was a son of the late Charles Lawson and Charlotte Albertha (Conrad) Manthorne. Ralph joined the army in 1940 and served in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He served in the Halifax Rifles 1st Hussars, 6th Canadian Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade. He went overseas in June 1943 and returned home to Canada in September 1945. After the war, he worked at National Sea Products, Lunenburg for 27 years in different departments and then as supervisor of the Fresh Fish Department, retiring at age 57. Ralph was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 23, President in 1966 and again in 1983. He was a life member of the Branch and received his 50 year pin in 1998. He was very much interested in the United Church Camp, Sherbrooke Lake, helping to build the road to the lake and with other work that was necessary; a charter member of the Lunenburg Rod and Gun Club, helping to build the Club House; active in the Boy Scout movement for 10 years as Cub Leader, Scout Leader and on the Group Committee; a past member of Central United Church, Lunenburg. he was an avid gardener, spending six months a year at his cottage on Heckman's Island growing flowers and vegetables. He particularly enjoyed his terms as president of the Nova Scotia Institute of Chartered Accountants and Chairman of the Public Sector Accounting and Audit Committee. He most recently he served on the boards of the Jazz East Association and the Abilities Foundation. Some other groups who benefited from his involvement include the Dartmouth Minor Hockey Association, Banook Canoe Club, Dartmouth Sportsplex, and Neptune Theatre. He was predeceased by his parents, Eva and Ted; brother, Harry; sister, Annie; grandson, Brent; Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Dilys of 83 years; his son, Clayton (Madlyn), Portage La Prairie, Man.; daughters, Helen Langille, Halifax; Tammy (Gary) Faulkner, Calgary, Alta.; six grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Calgary on May 30. Following cremation interment will take place at a future date in New Ross. Born in Bridgewater, July 29, 1947, Olive was the beloved daughter of Greta M. (Bush) Woodworth and the late John G. Olive was a very avid bingo player, which she very much enjoyed with her mother and family. Surviving Olive's passing are her loving mother, Greta; brothers, Bruce (Lorna), John, Robert (Glenda), Keith (Karen), all of Bridgewater; sisters, Shirley (Calvin) Mulock, Rhodes Corner; Marion (Glenwood) Lowe, Auburndale; Carolee Richardson, at home; uncle, Jim Bush; several aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces. Olive was predeceased by her loving father, John G.; her grandparents, Arthur and Olive Bush; Asher and Rosella Woodworth; several uncles and aunts. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 1 in St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Bridgewater, Rev. James Slack Jr. officiating. Private family burial of ashes in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Family flowers only.
