NAUGLER, TRUEMAN Young Man Dies In Tragic Manner BRIDGEWATER March 15, 1938 - In the home of Russell Naugler there is sadness tonight, as a heart broken, father, mother and brother are disconsolate over the death under tragic circumstances of the other brother, Trueman, 25. Tonight the father said, " Although we had no money I had two of the finest sons in the world." This was borne out by the people of the village, and his pastor, Rev. Douglas Conrad who spoke in the highest terms of the young man's fine Christian character. It was said by the father tonight that a friend of his son, Trueman, had gone to a dance with another companion a few nights before. Last night the father suggested that Trueman, accompany his brother and a friend to a dance. The group had departed. At midnight, he had heard one of the boys come in, and never having been caused any worry by either son he had gone to sleep again. Later the other brother, Cecil had arrived and found a note, on the kitchen table from Trueman. The body was found at a place suggested in the note near the home. The funeral will be tomorrow at 2.30 o'clock. Love Rejected; Bullet Ends Life Sad Tragedy Enacted At Camperdown Tragedy at an early hour yesterday morning laid its hand on the quiet little village of Camperdown, 12 miles from Bridgewater, and in the neat, comfortable farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Naugler, a touching scene was enacted, when the grief-stricken father and mother told the pathetic story of their son, Trueman's death by a self-inflicted bullet wound in the temple, to the Bulletin reporter yesterday afternoon. A note found on the kitchen table by his younger brother, Cecil, after he had returned from a dance on the fateful morning, which is now in the possession of the R. C. M. P., told the grim story. The note read in part: "Dear Mother, Dad and Brother: You do not know what a state I am in. I hope God will forgive me for what I am going to do. I wish the car to be dad's or Cecil's. Tell my sweetheart, Mary, that I said good-bye to her and that I love her as much as ever. Look down below the hill in the old drag road, but don't come yourselves. Send someone else-the rest is hard to say. T. N." Despondent because his sweetheart, the 21- year-old teacher in the village school, preferred another man, Trueman Naugler, 25; took his own life. While, as your representative, was told, she had been engaged to a young man in her own town; she and young Trueman had been keeping company for some months. Lately she showed a preference for Trueman's cousin, Clyde, and on Monday evening appeared at a dance in the village in his company. A great change had come over the boy in the past week, his parents said, he became morbid and showed little inter-est in the home where he had always been cheerful and happy. On Friday he borrowed a revolver from a neighbor to go rabbit shooting, he said, but cautioned his brother, Cecil, to say nothing about it to anybody. Accompanied by his brother and some of the boys in the neighborhood he attended the village dance on Monday evening. The sight of his sweetheart openly showing her apparent preference for his rival, weighed on his mind. Returning home at midnight he decided to end his life. Arriving home at 3.15 o'clock in the morning his brother Cecil found the note lying on the kitchen table. After awakening his parents and breaking the sad news to them, he aroused his uncle, Colin Naugler, and Calvin Naugler, who lived nearby and together they found the body of Trueman Naugler not far from the house, and lying in the drag road below the hill. The R. C. M. P. detachment at Bridgewater was notified and Coroner S. M. Zinck, who visited the scene, stated it was a clear case of suicide. When notified of the tragedy by the young man's grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Naugler, the young teacher sobbingly said, "I'm sorry, it was all my fault." The school was closed for the day. In this happy Christian home the parents were comforted with the assurance that no harsh words had ever been spoken and there had never been any disagreements. "Trueman, " the parents said, was a good boy, he was a member of the Lutheran church and a regular attendant at Communion. Following a short service at the home at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon, the funeral will be held from Christ church. The pastor, Rev. Douglas Conrad, will conduct the service. He received training at St. John's, Quebec, Camp Borden, Ont., and during the past year he was stationed at the R.C.A.F. Station at Chatham, N. B. Before enlisting he was one of the members of the clerking staff of Century Hardware Ltd., Bridgewater N. S. for six months during which time his genial manner won for him many friends among the many customers whom he served. Possessing a most friendly disposition, he was a general favourite among all the younger folks of his own age, and at the same time he was likewise greatly admired by those older than himself because of his courteous manner, sunny disposition and strong evidence of good Christian principles. Because of these distinguishing characteristics of his life, it can easily be realized how his early passing has affected a distinct loss to his family and home which will be so lonely without him, his station which will miss him so keenly and his numerous friends who treasured his acquaintance and who will ever cherish his memory. Surviving are his parents, three brothers, Earle and Carl, of Sudbury, Ont., and Johnnie at home; three sisters, Beulah (Mrs. Arthur Hirtle), of Port Clyde, Shelburne Co.; Violet (Mrs. Donald Nauss), of Petite Riviere and Nina at home; likewise a grandfather, Mr. Angus Nauss at home. Predeceasing him was one sister, Florence Grace, who passed away in infancy. The body of the 19-year-old airman was recovered from the river on Friday and brought here for interment. The remains were escorted by Sgt. E. E. Mulcahy and LAC Piercy of the Chatham Station. Arrangements for his funeral were made by FO Button. Following its arrival here and previous to its burial the body rested at Wamback's Funeral Home, 64 Dufferin St., at Bridgewater, Mr. Wamback taking charge of the body, and fulfilling his duties in his usual pleasing manner. The funeral service was held at St. Matthias Anglican Church, Italy Cross, at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Stephen Jeffreys and Padre Vickerley officiating and was undoubtedly the largest funeral ever held in Italy Cross or surrounding communities, the interior of the church being filled to capacity sorrowing neighbors and friends and many more standing outside who had come to pay their last respects to this beloved young airman and to express their deepest sympathy to his sorrowing family. In his address Rev. Jeffreys reviewed the visits he had made to the home for the purpose of breaking the various items of sad news connected with the tragedy and at the same time expressing his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family. Padre Vickerley likewise expressed his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family and pointed out the great loss the station at Chatham had received by the passing of LAC Nauss. In both addresses the congregation was reminded of the hope of the glorious resurrection and life to come. Favourite hymns sung were "Hiding In Thee" and "Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is Calling." A solo "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" was pleasingly rendered by Mrs. G. H. Crouse, of Bridgewater. The choir was composed of members of the choirs of the Anglican and United Churches of Italy Cross, of Middlewood United Church choir and the members of the choir of the United Church of Crousetown. They were also ably assisted by Lt. Col. R. G. Bowser and Rev. Kelvin Johnston, of Middlewood. The organist was Harold C. Eikle, of Crousetown. During the playing of Handel's "Dead March" from Saul the large concourse of people slowly and reverently departed from the church to the cemetery where a ceremony and burial of full military honors was bestowed upon their beloved young friend and fellow air man by personnel from the R.C.A.F. at Greenwood air base, which provided the Padre, Escort Party, Firing Party and Pall bearers who were William Hodgson, D. J. Nickerson, Donald McIntosh, Edward Young, Malcolm McPherson and Gerald Wintermeyer. Interment was in the family lot in the Anglican Cemetery at Italy Cross. Sarty) lost his beloved wife and best friend after a courageous battle with cancer. Mom was a caring person, who most of all loved her children. Mom always enjoyed having her children and grandchildren around, cooking meals, remembering when we were all small, giving her wise advice and sharing all our favourite recipes. Mom was always up for an adventure whether it be travelling a few thousand miles for a beat-up bus or taking fishing gear to Newfoundland in the dead of winter, always repeating after her and Dad returned home, never again, but at the first sign of a new adventure Mom was the first to have her bags packed. Mom's accomplishments were many, but the one that she was most proud of was obtaining her CNA's in 1980, after being out of school for many years and still having time for her children and grand- children. After graduation, she worked at the Queens General Hospital in Liverpool where she shared her loving touch with many. Mom loved Bluegrass music, camping, travelling (in which she met hundreds of friends throughout Canada and the U.S.), woodworking, the Toronto Blue Jays, making Christmas wreaths (of which she spent all the money on us), meeting people and spending time and redecorating her home (with the help of Dad). Mom made her final wishes clear to us in writing, and on June 8, 1998 we fulfilled her wishes. Dad, children and spouses / Scott, grandchildren, brother Carlton and wife Margie, and Rev. Charlotte, took her ashes to Springfield and placed them by son Roden Sarty, wife Arleen and grandchildren Maegan and Alec's home so she could watch over them. Similar ceremonies were carried out at daughter Elaine Crouse, husband Brent, grandchildren Michael and Kimber's home, daughter Nadine Sarty, husband Robbie, grandson Billy's home, daughter Zena and husband Russell Thomas, grandchildren Jennifer and Rebecca's home. We then travelled to Mom's home and placed ashes so she could watch over and talk with daughter Kim, boyfriend Scott and son Colby, and last, but not least, watch over our Dad.
