Following several years of employment with E.G.M. Cape & Company and Atlas Construction Company, Ltd., Gordon joined the Nova Scotia Power Commission in 1950. Starting as a construction engineer, he became chief engineer in 1956, director of engineering and thermal production in 1968, and vice president in 1972. He retired as senior vice president in 1985. During his tenure at Nova Scotia Power, he was responsible, at one time or another, for every aspect of utility operations, and through his work touched and improved the lives of many people. Significant projects completed during his career include generating facilities in Trenton, Lingan, Point Tupper and Wreck Cove. Industrial developments in the Strait of Canso were direct spin-offs of power projects. He was at one time a member of the International Commission on Large Dams, and the research he promoted affected the way concrete structures are designed throughout the world. A long-time proponent of Fundy tidal power, he saw the first use of this renewable energy resource when the Annapolis Tidal Power Plant began operation in 1982. Following his retirement, Gordon created G.D. Mader & Associates to provide consulting services to the electrical utility and other industries. He remained active with his company until this year. Gordon had a long involvement with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. Serving as president of APENS in 1961, he received its Citizenship Award in 1982 and an honorary life membership in 1995. Gordon was also active in his community, serving on the Board of School Commissioners from 1969 to 1972, and on the Boards of Governors of St. Mary's University, Mount Saint Vincent University and the Technical University of Nova Scotia. An accomplished violinist who played with Ifan Williams' Symphony at a young age, his home was always filled with music. Gordon was a devout Roman Catholic whose daily life and church involvement reflected the principles in which he believed. With his wife and helpmate Lorina Mary (Bouchard), RN, he celebrated 52 years of marriage this year. Together, they dedicated their lives to raising six children, two of whom are theologians while the other four are engineers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Susan Elizabeth Brown (Hunter), London, Ont.; sons, Douglas James (Beverley), Mandeville, Louisiana; John Garth (Susan Ryan), Calgary; Ronald Charles (Norma Linney), Dartmouth; daughter, Mary Christine (Antal Prokecz), Prince Albert, Sask.; and son, Thomas Edgil (Maureen), Waverley; sisters, Mary Adelaide (Mrs. Cleveland Miller), Halifax; Marjorie Elizabeth, Halifax; Kathryn Jean Marie Wier (Tom), Halifax; grandchildren, Mary-Elizabeth Joanna and Andrew Hunter Brown, Stephen Douglas, Jennifer Margaret, and Jonathan Daniel Mader, Mandeville, La; Janet Christine and Caitlin Elaine Mader, Calgary; Elizabeth Anne, Charles Alexander,Theresa Rosanna, and Patricia Lillian Mader, Dartmouth; and Joanna Elizabeth,Alexander Thomas William, Daniel Gordon Vincent and Rebecca Mary Mader, Waverley.
