St. Mary's Catholic Church
Church Point, Nova Scotia
Built in 1905, this historic Catholic church, which took almost three years to build, was reported to be the largest wooden church in North America. Its steeple rose 202 feet and was firmly anchored in 40 tons of stone and rock. In 1944, thirty-nine years later, the builder, Leo Melanson, was awarded a medal by Pope Pius XII for his outstanding work. The three huge bells, the organ and the stained glass windows were all imported from France.
