The following abbrevations should be found helpful as you read records produced by others, or as you prepare your owns. Although these are not necessarily all official, they are getting to be fairly universal.

{ } = usually a recorders note / item not in the reference
( ) = items in the reference / such as a maiden name that is in a bracket in the reference.Dates = day/month/year
Months should have a three letter abv. = Years should be written with full four digets.
This prevents having to use punctuation marks, plus the numbers are separated, thus less prone to errors.Jan / Feb / Mar / Apr / May / Jun / Jul / Aug / Sep / Oct / Nov / Dec
