1770 Census of Conway
Sunbury County, Nova Scotia (now part of NB)

1770 Census NS-by district / Transferred from The Chignecto Project
foreword by Cleadie B. Barnett, C.G.(C)

Until the year 1784, Sunbury County, Nova Scotia took in the greater part of what is now New Brunswick. The borders were very poorly defined, but included most of the lands, excepting all, or portions of, what are now Westmorland and Albert Counties, and some of the western boundary with the now state of Maine. Settlement at this time did not reach much above what is now Fredericton, York County, NB.
The District of Conway, took in those portions of land around the mouth of the Saint John River, and according to the map of 1765, extended up as far as Long Reach, Kings County, NB. We will find many references to land grants in the area of Kingston, and elsewhere, being in Conway, pre the 1784 changeover.  See the  Studholm Report  for some of these same settlers, to follow their progress to 1783.
