 Hillsdale Cemetery - Hammond Parish

Andrew Jenks Sherwood, of Loyalist stock, moved up the Hammond River from his parents' homestead at French Village to a grant at Hillsdale to become a pioneer resident there. His brother, John, also moved up river around 1814 and became a pionner settler in the Hammond Vale area. They were joined in this region by the Odells, the Steeves (Stivers), the Mallerys, the Molaskeys, the Pickels, the Smiths and the Johnsons, as well as others, many of whom were either of the Baptist faith or espoused the Baptist faith after settling here.

The Hillsdale Baptist Church was established in 1812. It stands on the eastern side of the bridge crossing the Hammond River at Hillsdale. In behind it, in the woods, is the cemetery which can be reached by going through a gate beside the church and proceeding south for a bit before taking the first road to the left, which leads directly to the cemetery. It is here that many of the early settlers of Hillsdale found as their final resting place. As is the case with many cemeteries of olden days, there is the strong probablilty that not all of the people buried here are designated by a stone. Sometimes a wooden marker was put up by families who may have intended to place a proper stone there eventually but never did so, and the marker has long since disappeared. Or, sometimes, no stone or marker may have been placed there.
