The Manitoba GenWeb Project, part of Canada GenWeb Project, is based on the USGenWeb Project. The Canada GenWeb Project consists of a group of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county/district/region and every province of Canada. The Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone.
The purpose is to create a global library for genealogy research on the Web. Canada researchers are very fortunate in that there is already an enormous amount of Canadian information available on the Internet. The role of the Canada GenWeb Project is to assist researchers in locating this information, as well as to add to the existing online data.
In March and April of 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point on the Internet for all counties in Kentucky, where all collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases at the County level and generally oversee the contents of the Web pages.
The same type of project now exists for every state in the U.S., as well as many countries around the World, including Canada. The Canada GenWeb Project was begun in 1997, and is modeled after the USGenWeb Project is part of the World GenWeb Project. Our common goal is the collection and distribution of genealogical data on the Web.
