BURNS, Rev. NELSON

The Rev. Nelson Burns (Methodist), is the son of John and Deborah Burns, and was born at Niagara, March 22, 1834.

Educated at Niagara High School and at Toronto University (M.A., and silver medal in Natural Sciences, 1857), he studied for and was admitted to the ministry, having previously been head-master at Welland, St. Thomas, Port Dover and Milton High Schools.

He was also editor and proprietor of the Georgetown "Herald". Since 1883 he has been President of the Canadian Holiness Association, and since 1886 has been editor and proprietor of "The Expositor of Holiness", a monthly magazine devoted to the discussion and elucidation of righteous living. The movement, which is undemnominational in character, has created a stir in the religious world.

In May, 1894, Mr. Burns was tried before a committee appointed by the Guelph Conference of the Methodist Church, on certain charges of heresy growing out of his peculiar views, and the charges being found proven he was suspended from the ministry of the Church.

He is now pastor of the Christian Association Church, Toronto. As a Canadian he has great faith in the future of his country, and believes that it will become second to none.

On July 12, 1866 he married Eleanor Tyler, daughter of the late William Tyler, Justice of the Peace, Erin, Ont. She died 14 May 1919
