Dated @ March 24, year of 1884? (hard to decipher)
Another of the older residents of the city of Rochester has gone to her long home.  Mrs. Elizabeth Claffey passed away yesterday afternoon at the advanced age of 72 years!  Mrs. Claffey was born in Queens County, Ireland and came to Rochester a score and a half of years ago.  Most of her life in this city was spent in the fifth ward.  Her maiden name was Elizabeth Delaney, and her marriage to the late Daniel Claffey occurred four years after she had taken up her residence here.  The fruits of this marriage were
nine children, four of whom, all daughters, survive.  Of those dead, three were sons, all being millers.  Two of them passed their last hours at the old homestead, 19 Hand Street.  The oldest, however, died of pneumonia in Kentucky in 1874.  Daniel Claffey was a miller by occupation and died seventeen years since.  He was employed by James Whitney & Son.  He was highly respected as was his wife who has just died, being among the oldest and most reliable citizens of Rochester.  Mrs. Claffey was a committed
member of St. Bridget's church and the funeral service will be from the house at 7:40  tomorrow morning and from the church at 8 o'clock.

Santa Fe New Mexican, The (NM) - December 18, 1997

Deceased Name: Marguerite Claffey

Marguerite Claffey, who had a long association with St. Vincent Hospital and was a major contributor to the health-care profession in Santa Fe, died recently at her home. She was 89. Claffey was born Sept. 26, 1908, in Denver, where she attended Loretto Heights College. She later studied at the University of Southern California, the University of New Mexico, Highlands University and the College of Santa Fe. With aspirations of becoming a foreign correspondent, she majored in journalism, public relations and professional writing. Claffey was sent to Paris by her father at age 19 to broaden her education, but she grew homesick and returned to Denver. She married Dr. Frank Claffey on Nov. 30, 1929, and had two children: Frank L. Claffey and Thomas H. Claffey. She served as director of public relations at St. Vincent Hospital and was associated with the hospital for a quarter of a century, beginning as a volunteer in 1952, and ending her career as director of patient services and community relations. She was the first president of the New Mexico Hospital Auxiliaries. She also wrote a bilingual book for the hospital which gained her national recognition as a first of its kind in the health-care field. She was responsible for writing to the Mother General of the Sisters of Charity in Cincinnati to ask for a ''qualified administrator'' for St. Vincent Hospital. Sister Mary Joaquin was sent to run the hospital and the two became lifelong friends. After her father died, Claffey also took charge of the family businesses, which included ranches and a store in Chama, property in La Jolla and the Burns Bank in Colorado. Claffey's New Mexico heritage traces back to 1693, when Padre Gallegos came here as a colonist. His brother and Claffey's great-grandfather, Jose Pablo Gallegos, settled in El Rito and went into sheep and cattle ranching. She also could trace her father's family to John Hart, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In New Mexico, both her grandfather and her great-grandfather were in the Territorial Legislature. A politician, rancher and banker, her father served in the Indian Service at the opening of the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma and later as Indian agent for the Utes in Ignacio, Colo. He also held the office of state treasurer and state highway commissioner in New Mexico. Her mother's family came from Ovieda, Spain. Her grandmother Josefa Gallegos married Tom Burns, an Irishman, who came to New Mexico via Fort Union during the Civil War, settling in Tierra Amarilla. Claffey served as a registered lobbyist at the state Legislature, where her proficiency earned her the respect of then-Speaker of the House Bruce King, who referred to her has his ''gal Friday.'' She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Claffey and her son, the late Dr. Frank L. Claffey. She is survived by her son, Tom Claffey and wife Sylvia; and three granddaughters, all the daughters of the late Frank Caffrey: Gayle Kearns of Overland Park, Kan., Marilyn Claffey of Wilton Manors, Fla., and Karen Claffey of Santa Monica, Calif. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. on Friday at Cristo Rey Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Monastery of Christ in the Desert, P.O. Box 270, Abiqui£, N.M. 87510-0270.
