06-Calvin Claffey worked as a laborer in the 1887 through 1892 Columbus, OH City Directory. Is Agnes Claffey Fitzsimmon who married James Franklin Sellenberg (b 15 Dec 1864) of Pleasantville, Fairfield Co, Ohio a daughter of Calvin?

07-Samuel Claffey is not on 1898 list of his living children.

The following research was done by Brent Claffey from David Claffey’s Civil War Pension files and death certificates:

David CLAFFEY - Cert. 7488220.
Private, Independent Company, Washington Calvary, Pennsylvania Volunteers. Also, Private, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company G, 76th Regiment.

Enrolled at Washington, PA on Aug. 14, 1861. Honorably discharged at Camp Kelley, West Virginia on Feb. 1, 1862.

Enrolled at Newark, Ohio on Feb. 27, 1864. Honorably discharged at Columbus, Ohio on Jul. 15, 1865.

Married Louisa Roberts on July 13, 1862 in Perry Co., Ohio by Rev. N.W. Herron.
Died July 11, 1912 in Groveport, Madison Co., OH due to cancer of the mouth and throat.

Information given on death certificate #805 (obtained from the Columbus, OH Bureau of Vital Statistics) by his son William was that David was 76 years, 9 months and 28 days old; he had been born in PA on Oct. 13th, 1835; his father was Thomas Claffey (born in Ireland) and his mother's maiden name was Preston (also born in Ireland). He was buried in Groveport on July 13, 1912.

On April 23, 1898, David listed his living children:
William J. Claffey, born May 1, 1863
Louisa Claffey, born Nov. 3, 1865
Calvin Claffey, born Dec. 16, 1867
Arthur Claffey, born Jun. 20, 1872
Susan Claffey, born Jun. 30, 1875
Morgan Claffey, born Nov. 15, 1877
Lida Claffey, born Jun. 13, 1880
Earl Sandusky? Claffey, born Jan. 1883
Harry Claffey, born Jun. 20, 1885.

On Aug. 28, 1916, David's widow, Louisa, died of cancer in the spleen and stomach. Under reimbursements, on Sept. 9, 1916, daughter Lyda was listed with her husband Otis Mansfield, age 39, in Groveport.

On his declaration for the pension in Franklin Co., OH on Feb. 22nd, 1907: resided in Thurston, Fairfield Co., OH was 5'5" tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, born Oct. 13th, 1835 in Washington Co., PA, and since leaving service had resided in Franklin Co., OH from 1805 to 1872; Linn Co., IO during 1872; Franklin Co., OH from 1872 to 1904; Thurston, OH from 1904 to 1906; Groveport, OH in 1906, and Thurston, OH from 1906 to 1907.

Some family researchers believe that Winfield Claffey (see Madison, Franklin Co.) was a twin to Louisa Claffey, listed as David’s daughter (born 3 November 1865) in Brent’s research above. No child named Louisa is living with him on the 1870 census. Also, Winfield is not included on any census with the father David Claffey. A possible explanation might be that Winfield was named “David Winfield Claffey”. There is a David listed on the census of this household in 1870 as b @ 1865. However, no David is shown on the 1898 list provided by Brent above. If this is a list of living children did he die?

Descendents of this family should order the pension file to verify the accuracy of Brent’s transcription and to look for further clues on this family. The invalid application 493093 filed 20 Aug 1883 (certificate # 51820) and the 16 July 1912 widow’s pension application 990276 (certificate 748220) could provide more information. Further research including death certificates and obituary notices will be necessary to document Winfield’s relationship.

Harry was employed by Richwood Clay Mfg. Co. in Richwood. In August 1911 Harold Bernard Claffey, the 3 month old son of Harry Claffey died of pneumonia and in September 1911 his wife, Mrs. Cora Pearl Sine Claffey died of TB at age 20. Both are buried in Claiborne Cemetery.

In 1910 Albert Livingston was married to Hettie (mother of Harry Claffey Sr. b 28 May 1888). They lived next door to Harry and wife Mary in 1920 in Union Co, Claiborne Township, Village of Richwood. In July 1896 Elizabeth Livingston had sued Albert for divorce on grounds of desertion and failure to provide. The defendant did not appear. Albert Livingston died 9 July 1934 age 72, survivors included widow Hetty Davis Livingston and stepson Harry Claffey of Marion. Albert’s children were Johnnie, Samuel, Albert, Hester, Lucille, Asa Catherine and Olive.

According to some researchers, Winfield Claffey b 3 Nov 1865 was first married to Hester “Hettie” Isora Susan Davis in 1887 and second marriage to Ninnie Badger was in 1893. Therefore, Harry J. Claffey (Sr.) was the son of Winfield Claffey and Hettie Davis.
