In 1888 a John Claffy & Margaret Claffy sold a large tract of land in the town of Lloyd for $476.  Lloyd is apparently near Brooklyn.

In 1900 Thomas C. Claffey was employed as a janitor at NY Catholic Protectory, an orphanage, in Bronx, NY County, NY.  He was born in 1824. 


In 1860 Richard Claffie was in Brooklyn, Kings Co, NY.

Margaret Claffey b @ 1860 in Ireland was a widow living in Manhattan in 1920 who came to USA in 1882.  Her daughter was Chelesa Mickes b in NY in 1886 whose father was born in Newark, NJ. 

A June 20, 1906 newspaper mentions a Dr. M. E. Claffey, family physician, from Brooklyn.

In 1850 Jane Claffy b Ireland was living in Steuben, Urbana Co, NY with her children Keron age 9 b NY and Catherine age 19 b Ireland. 

Margaret Claffee b 1844 lived in Nassau, Rensselaer Co., NY and died at age 85 in 1929. 

Mary Claffy married Thomas Reynolds on 4 Jul 1857 at Holy Family Church in Auburn, Cayuga Co, NY (note John Claffy married Mary Teresa Kiley in 1886 in Auburn also.  Some references say he was married in Holy Family Church and some say St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

In 1875 living in Geneva, Ontario Co, NY were Charles Claffy, Ellen Claffy and Thomas Claffy.  Martin Claffey was living with the Andrew Campion family.  In 1879 Martin and Thomas Claffey lived there in 1882 only Thomas is listed, In 1883 Charles Claffey age 26 died there and in 1887 Thomas Claffy was in real estate.

In 1919 in Rochester, Monroe Co, NY Margaret Claffey married J. Connor and Michael Claffey married Kathryn Wimble.

Richard Henry Claffy, son of Richard and Mary Claffy of 70 Flatbush Avenue died 10 Dec 1862.

Ellen Louise Claffy age 1 daughter of Hugh and Sophia Claffy of 141 Hackett St. died 7 May 1869.

James Christopher Claffy age 5 died 20 May 1874 son of John and Mary Claffy of 134 Union St.

10 July 1874 Honor Claffy was named Administrator of Intestate William Claffin.  Bond 107-50-166 was issued.

In 1855 Daniel Claffy of Rochester, NY ran an ad seeking his brother Hugh last known to be working in Woburn, MA.  I found Hugh and his wife Ruth living in New Hampshire since 1850.  They were still there in 1870, never had any children, and by 1880 Ruth was running the farm by herself.  Daniel’s eldest unmarried daughter, Ellen A. Claffey, who was living with her mother Elizabeth in Rochester inherited their New Hampshire farm.  Ellen was 63 and was there with a man servant running the farm.  She must have sold it because she is not on the 1910 census in New Hampshire.  In 1880 Ellen (Ellon A.) Claffey was 45, single, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Claffey, living with mother age 71 and sisters Bridget 36 and Sarah M. age 33.

03-Daniel Claffey baptized by Rev. J. M. Grady on 28 Jan 1877 at Annunciation Church, 88 Convent Ave. NY, NY, God Parents Michael Clafey and Bridget Lanan.  Daniel and Elizabeth Kiernan Claffey are buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Ave, Hawthorne, NY.  Also buried there are Elizabeth Claffey and her husband Frank Bayer, Julia Claffey and her husband Frank Kist and John Daniel and his son Joseph.

04-Elizabeth Kiernan Claffey was the daughter of James Kiernan and Julia Marshall and was baptized 17 Feb 1878 by Rev. H. Prat at St. Agnes Church, 141 E 43 St, NY, NY, God parents Thomas Kiernan and Anne Marshall.  Elizabeth married Daniel Claffey at St. Roch (?) 525 Wales Ave, Bronx, NY on 05 Nov 1905.  Best man Edward Murray, Bride’s maid Emma Hart.  The Rev John Milo performed the ceremony.

05-Julia Claffey Kist had one child, Frank Kist who died 15 June 1991.

06-Daniel F. Claffey had 4 living children Daniel, John (d 7 May 1971), James and Joseph.  Still born were Daniel, Thomas, Patrick and twins John and Joseph.  John (d 7 May 1971) had daughter Denise, Daniel F.’s son James had James and Scott, Daniel F’s son Joseph P. was b in NY and raised in Hell’s Kitchen, then moved to NJ.  He married Patricia J. Laytham b in NJ. and they had Elizabeth Marie and Colleen Anne.

07-Anne V. Claffey Kennedy had 4 children:  Elizabeth, Thomas, Joseph and Marie Kennedy.

08-Elizabeth Claffey Bayer had 5 children:  Joseph, Eileen, Jean, John and Vincent Bayer.  Her husband Frank Bayer died Sep 1979.

09-John Daniel Claffey was married 2 June 1946 Annunciation Church by Rev John McSherry, best man was Daniel Claffey, Brides maid Marion O’Connell.  John Daniel had 4 children:  Catherine (Pidgie), John, Joseph (d 20 June 1949) and Karen.  John Daniel Claffey was born at home, 519 W. 131st St, NY, NY.  His mother Elizabeth Kiernan Claffey was 39 years old when he was born.  John Daniel’s death info was recorded in District 3529-69, Orange Co, NY, St. Anthony Community Hospital, Physician David J. McConell, Cause:  Arterio Sclerotic Heart Disease, Strong Funeral Home, Oak St., Greenwood Lake, NY.

July 28, 1896, Rochester, NY
Patrick Claffey, who is accused of robbing the house of A.C. Jackson at 253 Mt. Hope avenue last Saturday morning and also Guilford’s drug store at 227 Lake avenue one week ago Friday night, was arraigned before Judge Ernst in Police Court this morning and waived examination.  The details of Claffey’s capture in Buffalo were published yesterday.  When found he had a quantity of jewelry on his person, which has since been identified by Messrs. Jackson and Guilford as their property.  The jewelry included a ruby ring, set with turquoise and diamonds, ten in number; a diamond ring, with two diamonds and one large pearl; a small ring set with pearls alone; one small watch with jewelry setting and chatelaine attachments; a gold pencil with black jet bands; diamond earrings, a pearl file for the finger nails, a red morocco jewel case and a watch chain with a Masonic charm.  Chief Cleary received word from Chief of Police Dennis of Charlotte this morning that Claffey was arrested at that place on the night after the Guilford robbery and that when arraigned next morning he had given a watch as security for his appearance on the date of the trial.  The watch was forwarded to Chief Cleary today, and identified by Mr. Guilford as his property.  Claffey’s case will now go before the grand jury. 

In 1920 Helen Claffey, widow, born MA, was a roomer with Mary C. Murphy in Geneva, Ontario Co, NY.

In 1879 in Geneva, NY Directory, Martin Claffey, grocer and Thomas Claffey, maltster. 

The 1875 Geneva, NY census lists Martin Claffey, Charles Claffy, Ellen Claffy and Thomas Claffy.  One Charles Claffy died in Geneva in Sep 1833.  The April 1877 Geneva Gazette lists a real estate transfer from William G. Dove to Thomas Claffy.  The 1870 index lists Thomas Claffey and Mary Claffrey; 1865 lists Mary Claffy.  There is an Ellen Claffy on the 1870 census in Ontario County.

24 Oct 1840 John Claffy was naturalized in Warren Co, NY.

Buried in Saratoga Co, NY, Waterford Rural Cemetery:

Hattie Claffey 18 Jun 1885, John Claffey, no dates, removed from Moreau, NY which is also in Saratoga Co, Louis A. Claffey, 25 Apr 1911.  Also George T. Claffy 31 Jan 1959 died at residence of his son Bert J. Claffy, Wyhantskill, Mart Etta Claffy 11 Aug 1943 wife of George T. Claffy, and Mary Etta Claffy 27 Dec 1946.

In 1850 Thomas Cloffey (probably should be Claffey) was on Rome, Oneida Co, NY census. 

10 Sep 1837 at St. Patricks Cathedral in Rochester, Monroe Co, NY Lucy Claffy was godparent to Charles Buckley, son of James Buckley and Maria Clancey.
 

Ellis Leroy Claffey was a WWII vet from Ilion, Herkimer Co, NY.

Joseph Claffey b 15 May 1911, d 14 Nov 1987 and Louise T. Claffey b 18 Dec 1912, d Oct 1993 were from NY and are buried in Greenville, SC 

In 1889 in Albany, NY lived Morris Claffee on Clinton Ave, and Mrs. Jane Claffy lived on the corner of Judson & Third Sts.

Around 1889-1892 in Rome, NY was Miss Mary Claffey, milliner, Michael C. Claffey, Michael Claffey who worked for Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburgh Railroad as baggagemaster & conductor, all living at 124 Canal St. in a boarding house run by Mrs. Catharine Claffey.

Also living in Rome were James Claffey, and Mrs. Patrick Claffey.

In 1850 Rome, Oneida Co, NY was Thomas Cloffey age 30, laborer, cannot read or write, b Ireland and wife Elizabeth age 27 b Ireland and one year old daughter Elizabeth whose middle initial is either S or A.

In 1920 in Rome, NY was Michael Claffey b NY age 63 parents b Ireland and his wife Linda b NY age 48 father b Germany, mother b NY, and Catherine Young, mother-in-law, age 74, father b Martzler (Germany?) mother b Germany.

Bessie H. Claffy Wallaber b 1895 d 1967 wife of Earl C. Wallaber is buried at Westernville Presbyterian Cemetery in Westernville, Oneida Co, NY.

Mary Claffey b 1867 d 1936 buried in St. Joseph Cemetery, Section B, Genesee Co, NY.

Thomas Claffy born in Co. Westmeath Ireland sailed from Liverpool headed for Albany, NY.  He filed a Declaration of Intent to become a Citizen 30 Aug 1869, age 60, and was naturalized October 26, 1871, from Naturalization Book #22 from Albany.

Ellen Claffey was the daughter of Charles and Anna Egan Claffey.  She was born in Oneida County, NY in 1840, but lived in Highmarket.  Her siblings were Marie b 1828 (married Hughes, then James Leo); Brigit; Elizabeth b 1837 (m. Dennis Fox); and Anna b 1842 (m. John McGovern).  Ellen married Patrick McHale b c1830 Co. Mayo Ireland the son of Patrick and Margaret Mullarkey McHale.  He came to Lewis Co, NY with his mother (father died at sea) and siblings William b.c. 1822, Michael b.c.1827, James b 1828 (m. Ellen Hanley); Edward b 1835 (m. Margaret McGowan), Hannah b.c. 1836 (m. Patrick O’Toole, and John b.c. 1841 (m. Elizabeth Coleman).  <>

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported on 25 June 1885 that Joseph J. Claffey graduated from the commercial course at Central Grammar School.

The 1880 census of Middletown, Orange Co, NY lists John Claffy age 50 b in Ireland, town of birth looks like Uallkilltown.  I have the handwritten card of the census taker and if he is yours I will send it to you to figure out the writing of the townland.  His wife was Margaret 45, kids James 18, Mary 16, John 14, Tessie 11, Thomas 6.  All kids b in NY.

Bridget Claffy married Andrew Fihily 8 Aug 1839 Roman Catholic, Killtomb and Camma, Roscommon, Ireland.  Immigrated to Middletown, Orange Co, NY.  Feeley Kids: Catherine Feley/Feeley b @ 1847, James 1849 never married, Daniel 1850, Bridget 1853, Rose 1860, Elizabeth 1863, Michael 1866.  Bridget Claffy (the mother) died 2 July 1881 age 58.

Thomas Claffy was christened 1 Jan 1837, Roman Catholic, Killtomb and Camma, Roscommon, Ireland, parents James Claffy and Mary Feely.

Thomas Claffy of Clinkin near Bray, Ireland, was in Orange Co, NY in 1848 married to Elizabeth Callahen, daughter of James Callahen of Rochester, NY.

Thomas Claffey’s obit 28 Jun 1888, Acton Free Press, p2, col. 2 mentions daughter Mary Albin of Belleville, Illinois.  This family needs to be researched further to clear up some things that don’t quite fit

01-Thomas Claffey, Catholic, probably from Dublin, Ireland, died in Sharon, PA, buried Newcastle, PA.  Lived in Acton, Ontario, Canada (near Toronto) from 1850 to 1865.  Called “Black Tom”.  Family legend says he was a railroad worker before coming to USA.  In 1848 he worked for Daniel Sharpe in Orange Co, NY.  Listed on 1850 Rome, NY census as Thomas, Elizabeth and Elizabeth J(ane) Cloffey.

02-Elizabeth “Betsey” Calahan probably married @ 1848 in Orange Co, NY.  She was 6 feet tall, daughter of James Callahan of Rochester, NY.  Her sister was Esther Callahan, also 6 feet tall b 1832, married James Rogan and they lived in New Castle PA on 1871 census, along with Elizabeth Callahan Claffey, age 90.

03-James Claffey was a stone mason and probably worked on canals.

06-Henrietta Claffy were living with their maternal grandfather, Sebastian Herrmann in Sharon, PA in 1910.

CLAFFY-On Friday, June 13, 1920, at her residence, 246 Carroll St., Brooklyn, Margaret, widow of John Claffy.  Solemn mass of requiem on Tuesday, June 23, at 10 o clock, in St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Hlcks and Summit Sts. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers. Automobile cortege.

 

Here are the obits for 1) Margaret Claffey Hoffman, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Claffey, and 2) Peter McGowan, husband of Catherine Claffey.  Catherine was also a daughter of Thomas and Margaret.

Mrs. Margaret Hoffman, "widow of Frank [Hoffman, died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Peter McGowan, Highmarket,
but a I few hours after the death of her brother-in-law, Peter Mc-Gowan, the cause of death was bronchial pneumonia. Mrs. Hoffman was formerly Miss Margaret Claffy, daughter of the late. Thomas Claffy. She was born in Highmarket, but since her
marriage had spent most of her life in nearby towns. She 1s survived by one. sister, Mrs. Peter McGowan, Highmarket:
also a nephew, Daniel Claffy, of Lyons Falls, where the body was taken.

Peter Mc-Gowan an aged resident of Highmarket, died at his home Thursday, December 29 at noon. Apoplexy was the cause of his death. He was ill only a couple of days, attending- church the previous Sunday. He was born in Highmarket March 14. 1847, son of the late Mr and Mrs John McGowan. Many years ago he married Miss Catherine Claffy, of Highmarket and he always resided in
this town. He leaves his wife and one brother, N James Mc-Gowan of Lyons Falls, and several nephews and nieces.
The funeral was held from St. Mary's  church, Constableville, Saturday morning at 10:30, Rev. F. P. Diviney officiating.
Burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery. The funeral was in charge of Undertaker C. Trainor.

Mrs. Maria Claffey Minton, 94, died Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Catherine Wright), in
New Haven, Conn. Death was attributed to the infirmities of advanced age.
The body was brought to Lowville to the home of another daughter, Mrs. Ohria Brant. Funeral services were
held Wednesday morning at 9:30 from St. Peter's church, with interment at
Constablevile. Mrs. Minton was born in High market Feb. 5, 1844, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Claffey. When a young woman she was married to Martin
Minton, of Highmarket He died in Houseville 54 years ago. During her active life, Mrs. Minton was a domestic nurse. Until 1933 she resided with Mrs. Brant in this village. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Wright of New Haven; Mrs. Brant, of Lowville, and Mrs. William McEntyre, of New Haven; seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

In Coxsackie, Green County, NY in 1880 lived Peter Claffy, age 40, laborer, born Ireland and his wife Johannah, age 40 also born Ireland.  Their children were:  George 14, Peter N. 12, Mary A. 10, John W. 8, Sarah (H?) 6, and Margaret
