01-Thomas Claffey: Some researchers list Thomas Claffey as the son of Charles Claffey b 1799 or 1802 Clonmacnoise, Parish of the Seven Churches, Kings Co., Ireland and his wife Anna Egan, b 1802.  Charles and Anna came to Ottowa, Ontario, Canada in 1828 moved to Boonville, Oneida Co., NY by 1840, from there to West Turin and Highmarket in Lewis Co., NY.  Charles died in Highmarket, Lewis Co. 27 April 1868. Their other children were Mariah Claffey b 20 June 1828 Canada, married first Mr. Hughes, second James Leo, and she died 1892 in Titusville, PA;  Bridget Claffey died young, Elizabeth Claffey b 20 Nov 1837 in New York or Quebec, Canada, married Dennis Fox in Rome (or Troy) NY on 5 Nov 1854, she d 15 May 1915 in Corning,Iowa; Hellen, or Ellen, born 25 Feb 1840 in Oneida Co., NY married Patrick McHale 25 Oct 1857 in Constableville, NY and died  1 Jan 1878 in Iowa; Ann or Anna born 27 Aug 1844 in NY married John McGovern (or McGavin) 4 Jan 1866 and died 21 Sep 1900 in Lucas Co. Iowa; Jane b 1847 NY the only child of Mariah Claffey and Mr. Hughes originally went by the name of Jane Hughes eventually took the name of Mariah’s second husband and was known as Jane Leo.
  <>Thomas & Margaret Nolan came to USA, Lewis Co, NY 1845, Thomas was a blacksmith. The ship “Queen of the West” arrived in NY 1 Apr 1845 with Thoms (Thomas) Claffey 30, Margt (Margaret) Claffey 24, place of origin Ireland, port of departure Liverpool.  Also on board was Ann Claffey age 28. It would not have been unusual for Charles and Anna to leave their six-year old son in Ireland with relatives when they left for the unknown in Canada.  Note that both Charles and Thomas named their first daughter Mariah.  In 1850 they lived in Turin, Lewis Co, NY.

02-Margaret Nolan Claffey:  James Nolan vouched for Charles Claffey on his citizenship papers.  Margaret Nolan Claffey was very active in the church at Highmarket.

03-Mariah Claffey on 1860 census working for a Charles Lee who was a farmer.

04-Daniel Claffey:  Blacksmith working in Oilcreek, Venango Co., PA in 1870 living with Patrick Conners family, in Greig, Lewis Co, NY in 1880 married with one daughter age 2, so he probably married in 1877.  Living in Greig, NY in 1900.

05-Mary Gallagher:  In 1930 she and daughter Lucille lived together in Oakland, CA.  1870 census of Greig, NY lists Hugh Gallagher 45 b Ireland and wife Sarah 37 born Ireland and their children James 16 b NY and Mary age 12 b NY.

06-Sarah Claffey:  married John Eckert.  Think this is the one who lived in Elba, Genesee Co., NY, and they apparently had no children.

07-Mary Claffey:  Not mentioned in 1937 obit of brother Ellis J. Claffey so she must have died before that.

08-Edward J. Claffey:  lived in Oakland, CA

11-Edward J. Claffey, Jr.:  US Army Warrant Officer

12-Daniel J. Claffey:  Social Security data lists year of birth as 1886, WWI registration dated 12 Sep 1918 says 1885, occupation shoemaker, self-employed, age 33, wife Anna Claffey of Lyons Falls, Turin, NY,short height, medium build, blue eyes, hair-dust of grey.  In 1910 he boarded in Lowville, Lewis Co. and worked in a shoe shop.

16-Ellis L. Claffey, US Army veteran of Mesa, Arizona died 18 July 2004.

17-Frank J. Claffey was a dentist in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Frank J. Claffey of Louisville, KY was born 9 Feb 1891 and died 29 Apr 1962.  He is buried in the Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  This is probably the Frank J. Claffey listed in the 1919 University of Louisville Dental Alumnae Records.  In 1910 he attended Lowville Academy and in 1915 was on the Albany, NY census.  In 1916 he was visiting relatives in Lyons Falls.  He was in Santa Fe by 1936. (see obits)

20-Thomas H. Claffey:

21-Ellis J. Claffey lived in Herkimer, NY when he registered for WWI draft.  He had blue eyes and brown hair, married Margaret Callan 21 June 1930, worked as a plumber, died Aug 1937 of injury received when pipe fell on him, lived in Batvia, Genessee Co, NY, no children.

22-Lucille Claffey:

23-Margaret Claffey:  Not on 1880 census with parents, perhaps married.

24-Catherine Claffey:  On 1880 census she was living with her parents in Highmarket, NY.

25-Thomas Claffey, Jr., also a blacksmith, settled in Leyden, Lewis Co, NY by 1900.

26-Sarah Battles lists her father born in Canada, mother born Ireland on census of Leyden, NY in 1920.

27-Emma J. Claffey living with widowed mother in Leyden on 1920 census.  Never married.  Postmaster of Port Leydon for 14 years.  Died December 1966 in Lowville, St. Martin’s Church, burial in Calvary Cemetery.

28-Margaret E. “Madge” Claffey, single, died 15 Mar 1985 and is buried in Oneida Co, NY.

32-Elizabeth “Bessie” married (1) Earl Wollaber, (2) Floyd Paddock, (3) Wyllys H. Thomas.  She died 1 Sep 1967 and is buried in Westernville (Presbyterian) cemetery in Oneida Co.

33-John Anthony Claffey:  born Lyonsdale, Lewis Co, NY, in 1918 worked on NY Central Railroad, was single with blue eyes and black hair, of medium height and build,  1920 census of Leyden, single, laborer in a pulp mill, by 1930 census he was married to Ethel M. and census lists Ann M. Thorn, age 89, born NY, as his grandmother living with John and Ethel.  This could have been Ethel’s grandmother.

34-Robert Stanley age 20, son, single, living with mother on 1920 census in Leyden, laborer in a mill.  He married Rhoda Riley in St. Francis DeSales Church, Utica, NY.  She died Nov 1983,.  Stanley died 24 Feb 1990 both are buried in Oneida Co., NY.  (See Special Obit page 1)

35-Ellen Claffey

36-John Claffey was also a blacksmith at age 19.  No trace of him after 1880
