Jewell Thornton, a resident of Merced for 47 years, died Wednesday at his home.

Mr. Thornton was born May 28, 1922, in Chicago. He worked as a supervisor for Pacific Bell. He served three years in the US Navy. He was a member of St. Patrick's Parish, Merced Elks Lodge No. 1240, and Merced Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Ann Thornton of Merced; daughters, Marcia Ferrari and Diane Pappas, both of Merced and Therese Stevens of Medford, Ore.; sons, Don Thornton of Merced and James Thornton of Lincoln; and 11 grandchildren.

A vigil prayer service will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. The Rev. Mike Lasari will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park at a later date.

Contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Parish Hall and Building Fund and Our Lady of Mercy School Foundation.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ivers and Alcorn Funeral Home.
