Joah Pearson of Brighouse started life as a telegraph boy [1886] and an apprentice printer [1895].
He later bought out his employer and expanded the business to become owner and editor of the Brighouse & Rastrick Gazette.
On account of his health, he left the printing industry and bought his family's bakery business.
He had a confectionery factory and bakery in West Park Street, Brighouse, and a shop and café at 53 Commercial Street, Brighouse – see Pearson's Confectioners.
He had other shops in Bradford and Huddersfield, 9 shops in all.
He advertised himself as
J. P. – The Great Provider
He was also owner of a spinning business in Bradford which employed 120 people, a member of Halifax Board of Guardians, a violinist with Brighouse Orchestral Society, a member of Brighouse Choral Society, and a Freemason.
In 1897, he married Hannah Jane Waller [1870-19??].
