Sir Enoch Hill


Sir Enoch Hill JP. FCIS. was born in Leek, Staffordshire.

Son of Elizabeth and Henry Hill [18??-1897].

He worked as a part-timer in a silk mill from the age of 8, and as a farm labourer, clerk, and journalist. He became a clerk in the Leek United Building Society. In 1896, he was appointed manager of the Leek United Building Society.

In 1896, he acquired interests in the Leek Post newspaper. He subsequently acquired the Leek Post and established the publishing company Hill Brothers (Leek) Limited.

In 1909, he founded the Halifax & District Permanent Banking Company Limited. He came to Halifax in 1902 as Secretary and Manager of the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building Society, succeeding J. D. Taylor. He was Managing Director of the Halifax Permanent Building Society [1917 to 1938], and Chairman of the National Association of Building Societies [1921 to 1933]. He was Chairman of the Halifax Conservative Association.

He was President of the Conservative Party in both Leek and Halifax. He stood unsuccessfully as Conservative MP for Leek [1922, 1923] and at Huddersfield [1924, 1929].

He lived at 54 Heath Crescent, Halifax [1905]. He bought, lived and died at Willow Hall, Cote Hill.

In 1913, he was appointed JP. He was knighted in 1928.

In 1883, he married (1) Esther Godwin Haines [1863-1904] of Leek.

Children:

  1. John Henry [b 1889] who became a solicitor

In 1906, he married (2) Bertha Henrietta Byrne Gee [1???-1951]


Bertha Henrietta was the daughter of Samuel Gee of Leek, Congleton
