The aviation and aeronautics engineer Sir Leonard Bairstow was son of Uriah Bairstow.
He was educated at Heath Grammar School [1891-1898] and Halifax Municipal Technical School.
He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Science where he carried out research into the explosion of gases. He worked at the National Physical Laboratory where he became head of aeroplane research. His work helped the British effort during World War I.
In 1915, Education Minister, Mr Pease, said
Our successes over our enemy in aviation is largely due to the investigations made into automatic stability by a young man who went through an elementary school, fought his way up to the Imperial College, went through a course at the National Physical Laboratory and invented and introduced the B. E. Plane
He was a member of the Royal Society of London and Aeronautical Society of Great Britain.
His father, Uriah Bairstow, taught mathematics at various institutes
