Back Lane
In May 1933, there were reports of unexplained sounds of
moaning – like someone in pain – between 11 pm and 3 am in the street
Houses here were built by James Priestley who lived at nearby
Goose Gate Farm, Illingworth.
The name is a corruption of the name James

In the 1950s this was a favourite spot for scores of kids – and their
fathers – to go sledging, because it offered two runs: one down the
old road (presumably an old coach road) and a transverse run for the
more adventurous leading to the beck at the bottom.
At the bottom of the road was an old iron gateway, approximately
10 ft wide, complete with stone pillars, beneath which was a narrow
but quite steep weir as part of the beck.
I would be interested to know if anyone has any information as to the
origins of the name Jasper Hill and what was the function of
the gateway which was rather too substantial to be a simple farm gate
