The novel Shirley written by Charlotte Brontë under the name Currer Bell.
The original title of the novel was to be Hollow's Mill or Fieldhead or Shirley. Charlotte left the choice to the publishers.
The novel was published on 26th October 1849, by Smith, Elder & Company. Charlotte received £500 for the book.
Charlotte decided to write a sweeping social chronicle that was
something real and unromantic as Monday morning
The story is set in the time of the Napoleonic wars in Europe, and the Luddite riots in England, and looks at the relationships between the mill-owners and their workers.
It uses the events at Rawfolds Mill as one of the sub-plots
