Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion : Photograph

The Armytage Arms, Clifton

Some images of the Armytage Arms, Clifton

Contributor Elizabeth Whitmarsh tells me
This is a photograph of the Ramsden family who ran The Armytage Arms at the end of the 19th century. The older couple in the middle are Charles Ramsden [1833-1901] and his wife, Ruth [1841-1907]. Their sons, Jemmie and Alfred, helped in the pub and served meals there. Jemmie also ran the farm on the land attached to the pub. The smallest child in the picture is Laura and she also helped with the meals and never married. The next to youngest (standing) is my grandmother, Bertha Ramsden. She married Arthur Hargreaves and they had Reg, my father
