Salterhebble
Salterhebble is a district of Calderdale to the south of the
town centre, between Halifax and Elland where the Hebble Brook
joins the Calder, a part of the township of Skircoat and
neighbouring on Southowram.
This is the closest that the Calder gets to the town of Halifax.
The branch of the Calder & Hebble Navigation from Halifax was
opened in 1828 and terminated at Salterhebble Docks here.
The name possibly refers to a salt way which may have passed
over a bridge – a hebble – there.
A Salter-heble is recorded in 1533.
Pronunciation:
The name is pronounced as it is read, with the stress on the third
syllable: sal-ter-hebb-el
