Scout Hall, Shibden – aka Scote Hall.
A house – Stainclifscout – dating to 1315 was owned here by the Stancliffe family.
James and Marie Stancliffe inherited Lower and Upper Scout.
A sundial plate is dated ANNO 1617.
In 1640, Marie sold her property to Samuel Mitchell, and in 1643, James also sold his property to Samuel.
In 1646, the property passed to Samuel's son, Samuel, who rebuilt Lower Scout.
In 1672, the property passed to his son, John.
In 1681, the present Scout Hall was built for John on the site. It is a 3-storey building with 12 bays, 52 rooms, 12 doors, and is [incorrectly] said to have 365 panes of glass – a calendar building – and is a mixture of architectural styles.
The number of tenants resulted in the building being much altered. The original parapets have gone.
After John's death in 1696, his widow, Mary, let the property to tenants, including the Clarke family. Mary remarried, to John Smyth, in 1697 and died in 1700. The property passed to John's granddaughters, Elizabeth and Catherine.
The hall had several tenants:
In 1805, Elizabeth conveyed the Scout Hall estate to Joseph Clarke.
It stayed with the Stocks family into the 20th century.
Nikolaus Pevsner described it as
a half derelict palace in the deserted English countryside
It has been empty for many years.
In the 1980s, it was partially restored by local businessman Peter Mellor, but it again fell into a parlous state.
In 2002, there were proposals to convert the Hall into apartments.
In 2005, plans were approved to restore and convert the Hall into 6 apartments.
In September 2009, the Hall was put up for auction but failed to reach the asking price of £350,000.
In 2011, it was bought by a private owner.
