Rowntree's of York

In 1862, Henry Rowntree bought the Quaker cocoa, chocolate and coffee company of William Tuke & Sons and established H. I. Rowntree & Company. He produced a wide range of products:

• Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles in 1881
• Table Jellies in 1901

and several chocolate products:

• Black Magic in 1931
• Aero in 1935
• Kit Kat - originally called Chocolate Crisp – in 1935
• Dairy Box in 1936
• Smarties in 1937
• Polo in 1948
• After Eight in 1962

In 1969, the company merged with Mackintosh's to become Rowntree-Mackintosh PLC.

In 1988, they merged with Nestlé to become the Nestlé Rowntree Division of Nestlé UK Limited
