Local Potteries

In the geological context, clay and coal are often found together.

Locally, these resources are found north and east of the Hebble.

From the 1750s onward, there were several potteries – producing ornamental and domestic pottery – on the hills across the district.

The types of pottery produced local were described as black-ware, fine-ware, and white-ware.

Some potteries – such as Howcans – were nationally known
