John Marsh

[1849-1916]


John Marsh was born in Wirksworth, Derbyshire [23rd June 1849].

He moved to Halifax.

Around 1873, he established a confectionery business, John Marsh & Sons, in Halifax.

He was a confectioner shopkeeper [1901] / a baker [1911].

In [Q2] 1873, he married Frances Ellen Royle [1854-1915] in Manchester.


Frances was born in Manchester.

She was a confectioner [1881]

 

Children:

  1. Thomas William
  2. child who died young [before 1911] – (possibly) Charles [1875-1876]
  3. Arthur
  4. child who died young [before 1911] – (possibly) Mary Hannah [1878]
  5. Winifred [1885-24th October 1915] who married George Edwin Haigh
  6. John
  7. Frances Elizabeth [b 1891] who married John Hughes

The family lived at

Living with them [in 1881] were boarders

Living with them [in 1891] were boarders

Living with them [in 1911] was granddaughter Mabel Marsh [b  1905].

Frances Ellen died 13th April 1915.

John died 10th January 1916 (aged 66).

Probate records show that he left an estate valued at £7,665 12/7d.

A sister Elizabeth Marsh was mentioned in his will. His executors were his sons Thomas William, Arthur, and John who carried the business on.

Members of the family were buried at All Saints' Church, Dudwell.

He was a keen lover of music, and was successively a member of the choirs at St Mary's Church, Halifax, St James's Church, Halifax & St Paul's Church, Halifax.

He was an active member of the West End Glee Union, Halifax & the Halifax Choral Society. Librarian of the Halifax Choral Society
