Kirklees Estate, Brighouse

Kirklees Nunnery and Kirklees Hall stand on the Kirklees Estate in what it now Kirklees Park, Brighouse

Things to look for when visiting the Park include

• The 18th century brick walled garden
• Robin Hood's Grave
• Nuns' Grave
• The late-mediæval Home Farm and buildings. These supported the Nunnery
• The Nun Brook and ornamental lakes. These were originally the fish ponds for the Nunnery
• The 72-ft long iron bridge over the brook [1790]
• The field next to the Gatehouse which is the site of the Nunnery

• Kirklees Hall
• ‡ Double aisled barn to north west of Kirklees Priory Gatehouse Grade: I
• ‡ Home Farm [Building Number 6] Grade: II*
• ‡ L-shaped Aisled Barn Grade: II*
• ‡ Malthouse
• The boundary wall to the orchard of the Nunnery Grade: II

The buildings marked with ‡ are on English Heritage's Buildings At Risk Register.

On Tuesday, 15th November 1881, 3 brothers – Sam [aged 40], Sydney and Hezekiah Waterhouse – masons of Sowerby Bridge, were severely injured when a bridge which they were building on the estate collapsed. A fourth man escaped unharmed.

In May 2012, the Estate – the buildings and 750 acres – was advertised for sale at offers of over £7 million
